I'm in bits, I really thought things were getting better.

We've done everything, behaviourist, etc. only had the dog since May and he's been aggressive since we got him home. Initially with me and dh, now he's fine with me but still nips dh. Though its always been on the back of the leg before. Dog has always been fine with dd, always.

Dh bent down to pick a Pringles tube up off the floor and says the dog just launched himself at dh. I didn't see it happen, dh is dripping blood.

My head tells me this is the end of the road for the dog.

OP, I have every confidence that once you get hold of the breed rehoming or the rehoming centre your distress will be over as they will reassure you that he is rehomable. Many many dogs have issues so please dont think he is the worst dog ever with no hope for a new home, he will likely make the right person a good pet. As a biter he wont get rehomed to a home with children so you dont have to worry, and they will work intently on his issues to do the best for him. Please do not listen to posts such as he may get left on a motorway or beaten or go to an ego maniac as rehoming places are extremely responsible and would never allow such an adoption. Him being a good looking, different breed and young is so so in his favour. Its definitely worth giving rehoming every try as you have time to do so. It may even be that the vet wont euthanaise him when you get there but ask you to sign him over for rehoming.

That dog has bitten at least five people and quite frankly, sounds disturbed.

Having seen several horrific injuries caused by dogs, I would be taking no chances whatsoever.

Whoever saying "the vet won't put the dog down" is also full of rubbish the, appointment has already been booked.

I do not understand the "save the doggie" mentality some people extend to patently savage and uncontrollable animals. You give dog owners a bad name.

GoshAnneGorilla · 29/08/2013 23:11

As for all will be well... Yes until the dog bites someone else.

This dog's particular issue is that it bites. Fairly frequently, it would seem. Let's hope all these people anxious to take such a dog on come out of the woodwork fairly quickly. Hmm

Viva - I think she meant various people weighing in with opinions though I'm not sure who exactly she meant.

Unfortunately threads on this sort of issue always generate a mix of support, good advice, cluelessness and twattery - sometimes from the same individuals.

Hope you get some sleep now. Flowers

VivaLeBeaver · 29/08/2013 23:55

Going to struggle to sleep.

Dog won't sleep in his usual spot on dd's bedroom floor as dd not here. He won't sleep on the landing either.

So gave in to the scratching, he's now on my bed.

Last time I slept in the same room as me he jumped up out of nowhere and bit my arm. I daren't lie down!

VivaLeBeaver · 29/08/2013 23:56

He just seems so wound up. He's had his ears flat to his head all evening.

Oh poor lad - and poor you.

Do you think he'd settle in his usual place if you slept in your DDs bed? Having him on your bed doesn't sound like a great idea to me from what you've just said.

VivaLeBeaver · 30/08/2013 00:01

I was in dd's bed the time he bit me!

He was on the floor and just jumped up to get me with no warning.

GrimmaTheNome · 30/08/2013 00:12

Oh dear.Sad This is just horrible for you. You want to try to soothe him so can't lock him out but doesn't sound like you can trust him enough to sleep.

xfilefan · 30/08/2013 00:12

Have you tried a Dap collar to help with his stress?

And goshannegorilla, the vets may well choose not to euthanaise him-vets dont enjoy euthanaising healthy dogs and will certainly discuss other options first. It would be a different story if it was a huge dog and a danger but rehoming is certainly an option for a dog - just because a dog bites does not mean the only option is death. My dog has definitely bitten more than 5 people, but as a jack russel hes not exactly a threat or able to cause a 'horrific injury'. Thus, I have never even imagined contemplating euthanasia. I think in fact OP said this dog hadnt broken the skin in any of the bites so hardly life threatening?. He needs rehoming and to be removed from a home with children, but euthanasia is not the only option. I feel it is unfair on the OP to be saying it is.

Dont worry OP, Im sure hell find a new happy home.

VivaLeBeaver · 30/08/2013 00:15

We've tried a dap collar.

He's broken the skin in a bite to my arm and a few to Dh's legs. Not deeply but enough to ooze blood. Then last week the bite to Dh's face was deeper, he had quite a bit of blood coming down his face.

I missed this thread. I dip in and out of the doghouse as I'm not on MN much these days but I absolutely empathise with your situation here, Viva. I have been in a similar situation myself and I wouldn't wish it upon anybody. My dog's story had a happier ending but it didn't look like it was going to for a long time while we tried to resolve the situation (and it took in excess of a year; it was absolutely awful and nearly brought my family to breaking point).

Anyway, I support and understand any decision you make in the interests of your family and this dog. Until you have been in a situation like this you can't really understand how difficult it is and how it tears you up inside. The guilt is just immense. I wish you and your family well and hope you find peace with your final decision.
