Got our new puppy on Saturday. I was in tears this morning and I'm a pretty experienced dog owner. Its just so hard moaning cow that I am He is a 9 week old cocker and is a beautiful, cuddly boy but is a massive shitting machine. And not in the garden either.

So any new puppy owners want to weep in here then please do.

Toby can go out tomorrow. I took him along the pavement today up the street away from any hedging to give him an idea of outside. He wasn't keen.... Packing huge pockets of treats tomorrow to get him excited about out. Smile

Sally, tell your dh that nearly all intact adult males develop benign hyperplastic prostatitis which is a horrible and painful condition relating to testosterone production. It begins at the age of 5 and dogs usually start to show signs of symptoms/pain/discomfort from the age of 7/8. The only cure for it is neutering, but it's far better to get them neutered young and prevent the suffering ever happening.

Having just had a very unhappy, poorly boy with different prostate problems, but similar symptoms (which cost £££s to fix) and seeing how miserable and distressed he was with it, I am not hesitating to get Pip done - although we don't really have any choice as we have to prove he is done at 6 months old as part of his adoption agreement unless there is medical proof that it needs to be delayed.

It's a problem if dh isn't on board with the crate training and as you said, it's more your problem than his if it's you that's home with Toby. Pip was the same with the crate at first but via clicker training and lots of kongs and busy buddies he seems to be getting over it now.

Happy birthday for tomorrow! Grin Wine

I am very Envy of all these pups going out and about. Pip will be 14 weeks on Saturday and doesn't have his second jab until 18th September, so won't be able to go out until the first week in October! Shock So much for my summer puppy. Hmm

SallyBear · 05/09/2013 18:41

Oh he will be done, definitely but I'm not going down the 18month route again. Monty DH's dog got very male with me after I moved in and was done at me insistence at 2. I don't think DH ever forgave me..... Sadly though the maleness stopped he still would growl at any female. I'm not having that again. No way!

Thank you for the birthday wishes. I'm going to insist on a nice takeaway tomorrow night when he gets back. I'm certainly not cooking on my birthday!! Grin Cheers!

happygolucky0 · 05/09/2013 18:51

Brill news that little Enzo has picked up. Gosh I feel for those of you that haven't been able to go out. I got Jessie at 10 weeks and she had had all her jabs.
Thanks Digard it is reassuring to know that she will get to enjoy her walks.
It didn't go too well for me either today when she was left. She got herself in a right stress yelping and going mad at the door. Told one of my neighbours that I am really sorry if she disturbs them but I need to get her use to being left. She was doing well last week with it and stayed calm. Maybe my son going to school has stressed her abit as he has been with her pretty much all the time.

basildonbond · 05/09/2013 18:56

Poor Toby but I wouldn't necessarily read poo eating as a sign of stress - as a puppy my sister's dog would happily eat poo of any description, inc her own, and was definitely not suffering from any kind of stress - some dogs just think poo's delicious (yuk)

I hope he gets used to being left soon but it is very tricky when you have 'parenting' disagreements ...

LostInWales · 05/09/2013 20:44

My friends little dog loves eating poo and she is the least stressy dog I have ever met

Just given puppy girl a lovely shower in the worlds most expensive shampoo, I was had special shampoo for her bad skin and after a cuddle in her blanket from DS1 she is lying completely on her back, legs akimbo, having a nap. I thought whippets were supposed to be elegant beasts.

Glad Enzo is being mischevious. Norty little creature making us all worry so much Wink.

We were celebrating only the other day because for the first time ever we don't own one single dog that eats poo!

Our very first dog was a rescue (we found her half dead in a terrible state) and she ate anything for a long time - including her own and other dogs' poo. She taught our next rescue pup to do it and it was passed from dog to dog - until we got Lurcherboy, who is terribly coy about his own bodily waste. Grin

Pip is similarly disgusted by his own waste matter and tends to poo, turn round look at it in disgust and make a sharp exit as if he can't bear to be in it's presence! Grin

Oldgirl was particularly disgusting and as a pup, she would eat our Boxer x boy's poor straight from the dispenser, before it had chance to hit the ground. Now that was disgusting.

We've tried all the common 'cures' and none of them worked. Pineapple seemed to make it more appealing if anything. Hmm

Aren't dogs lovely! Grin

happygolucky0 · 05/09/2013 21:57

Mmm yes the eating poo .... Jess drives me nuts with it. Not so much her own just anyone else she comes across. It's not the best habit but she appears to enjoy it! Unless its seeing me jump and down like a crazy person is her madness behind it. She would be more interested in eating poo then she is in her meals if I let her!!

SallyBear · 05/09/2013 22:22

It is disgusting. Sally was partial to cat and fox poo. It was always revolting. Really don't want Toby-Obi-Wan-Kenobi to be a poo eater. I'm going to leave him with a kong filled with ham hock and a raw carrot tomorrow morning in his crate with the door shut. Bloody dogs. Confused

digerd · 06/09/2013 06:47

happy
Last evening, I saw the Shitzu, who is now 6 months old, coming into the large field. I saw her do what mine does sometimes - suddenly stand firm and refuse to go any further.

She may have been put off as the day before we were met by an enormous but friendly and quiet Akita and a 5 month old very lively Staffie. She was a bit wary of his over-friendly, energetic play.
They just turned back and went to another quieter dog walk.

With Lhasas, I find they love to run, but not really into rough and tumble play. Mine have never been interested in chasing a ball.

Morning all

I have a very bored puppy here, who is seriously missing the busy, noisy household of the summer holidays. He's on a naughtiness mission - actually patrolling around looking for things to pull, drag, bite, chew, steal etc. Hmm Grin He has a living room floor littered with toys, but apparently they're all boring.

He is also highly unimpressed with the torrential rain. I have the back-door shut and that's apparently 'so unfair', so just to prove the point he decided to not bother even trying to go out and wee'd on the carpet by his crate. Hmm Fortunately he did stop when interrupted and took the remainder of his torrent outside.

Have decided to leave him on his own for the school run for the first time this afternoon.

Off to a VW show and local fete this weekend for socialisation. Think I'd better have spinach for tea - I'm going to need my Popeye muscles. Grin

Everlong, Pip didn't poo for a full 48 hours after the he had an explosion and the vet switched him to cooked chicken, so it's not surprising Enzo hasn't gone yet.

Pip's now on 50-50 chicken and kibble and it's been quite a shock, as he only pooed once a day on pure chicken and now, as he's still on 7/8 meals a day, he seems to be either eating or pooing. Hmm

He's looking so much better though. As the vet said, 'he's just lurcher skinny now, rather than emaciated puppy skinny'.

Fab41 · 06/09/2013 14:03

Beryl the border has decided she would rather not have a wee outside if its raining, so we have had two accidents today. hopefully I can get her back on track again. She seems to think that puppy pads are just to be dragged around and shredded...

Awks · 06/09/2013 15:00

Hello all, been away with work so it's good to catch up with all the puppy happenings. Jarvis is lovely - went out for his first walk today and was very cute. I am not sure how enamoured he was with the rain though Grin

Imagine what they're all going to be like when they meet proper Autumn and Winter weather. Poor summer pups - it's going to be a bit of shock to their systems. Grin

Left Pip with 2 medium kongs, 2 busy buddies and a large carrot and he was quiet the whole time I was out. (Still recording when we go out in case Lurcherboys Separation Anxiety rears it's head again.) He had eaten the lot in 40 minutes though! Shock How in earth he is still so skinny I'll never know, but I wish I had his metabolism!

I have a physio appointment next Tuesday and am wondering how on earth I can keep him quiet for over an hour if he consumes that much in 40 minutes. Hmm

I need him to try harder with his kongs. If it's tightly stuffed he just get's halfway-ish and gives up and if it's loosely packed he eats it too quickly. I had the same problem with Lurcherboy only worse. He could'nt be bothered to try unless the food literally fell out. Hmm Lazy lurchers!

happygolucky0 · 06/09/2013 21:57

Well done Pip !!! Happy Birthday sallybear
I have got the same problem with the kong. She can only get half out then gives up.
digard thanks for the info. Jess appears to like running rather than walking!! Ha ha trust me .

moosemama · 06/09/2013 22:26

Daft thing is, Pip seems to have a ridiculously long tongue, so he should be able to get it all out no-problem. Apparently he just doesn't have enough staying power. Hmm

SallyBear · 07/09/2013 06:50

Small boast (but only because I'm incredulous) that Toby for the last four nights has done both a wee and a poo when asked to, in the garden before bedtime! Never had a dog that would poo when asked. Amazing puppy. I keep saying to DH that he could have been selected to be an assistance dog but we have him instead! Lucky us!

moosemama · 07/09/2013 09:36

Clever lad Toby!

It makes life so much easier when they toilet on cue. Really useful for long car journeys and overnight hotel stays etc.

Pip is on a Landshark mission this morning. Little so and so snuck under my leg and nipped my inner thigh when I was sitting on the floor talking to dh this morning. Hmm He's at his worst when he's overtired and the dcs woke him up too early this morning. Fortunately he's just fallen asleep, so hopefully we can all eat breakfast in peace now.

We were supposed to be going to a VW show this afternoon with him, but dh has balked at the cost, plus, he's put on so much weight I'm not sure we'dl be able to even get him from the carpark to the show - which is a pretty long walk in itself - without buckling under the strain. Grin

SallyBear · 07/09/2013 11:15

I got a great birthday card this morning. Made me laugh, especially if you know 'your shoes' Grin
