Got our new puppy on Saturday. I was in tears this morning and I'm a pretty experienced dog owner. Its just so hard moaning cow that I am He is a 9 week old cocker and is a beautiful, cuddly boy but is a massive shitting machine. And not in the garden either.

So any new puppy owners want to weep in here then please do.

We're not actually allowed into the school, but we have to take the Reception children through the main junior and infant playgrounds, through the Reception playground and wait just outside the classroom doors and they are always late taking them in. Hmm

I think a lot will depend on your pup's character. Some pups are independent and happy to be left, others, like Pip, are quite needy when they first come home and need a lot of reassurance that you're not going to disappear and never come back, so take a little time to get used to being left.

Mind you, Pip has surprised me this morning. Dh went out and massacred the greengage tree last night, removing all the fruit, but it was too dark by then to check for windfalls and pits on the ground. So I was out there at 8.00 am with my rubber gloves on grubbing around in the grass to try and pick up every last bit. Pip came out with me for a while, but then came back in and curled up in his crate. I reckon it took me over half an hour, so he's obviously getting much better at being on his own for a longer.

I then had to sort the dcs out upstairs and he was awake, but sleepy in his crate and didn't make a peep then either.

I was woken up at 2.00 am this morning by the lovely sound, over the baby monitor, of Pip throwing up in his bed. Dh went downstairs to sort him out and didn't come back, turned out he'd fallen asleep on the sofa. He let Pip out for a wee, then lay down while he waited for him to go back to sleep and went out like a light.

Apparently it was just a bit of bile, but I'm fretful, because I'm pretty sure he necked a greengage yesterday when he thought I might take it off him. He seems fine this morning though and is eating, drinking and pooing normally.

Sally Schmackos are horrible things, full of fillers and colours, it could well be that. FIL gave one to Lurcherboy a couple of weeks back. Even he had a bit bad stomach afterwards and he's normal got a cast iron constitution.

If I were you, I'd give everything except real meat and his normal food a break for at least 24 hours, then reintroduce each thing he's had one by one, so you can work out what he's reacting to. It could be the philadelphia, some dogs don't do well with dairy.

SallyBear · 27/08/2013 09:35

Ok. No dairy or schmackos. That suits me. My hands smell like rancid marmite!

Ohalvo · 27/08/2013 13:06

Hi all!

Thanks for all the info! Yes, he is a soft wheaten terrier. We could not be more excited!

Trying to draw up a schedule for the beginning at the moment - just s he gets into as much of a routine as possible in the first few weeks! Any help with this would be great...!

He will start puppy classes in Edinburgh too - every Sunday for 6 weeks. :) need to wait till after his 2nd injections though).

Think we have everything ready - :/ I hope! Preparing myself for sleepless nights!

Ohalvo · 27/08/2013 13:07

Oh, and cant remember if I said this before but he is on Purina Beta puppy - at what stage can we start to introduce him to something new? x

SallyBear · 27/08/2013 14:31

I rammed a kong toy with chicken today. Took him an hour to empty it. He woofed at it when it wasn't behaving itself! Funny Toby.

Ohalva, as everlong said, you can start changing food over, very gradually a few days after he settles in. Wheaten puppies are the most adorable creatures. I am very Envy but couldn't ever have another Wheaten after losing our old girlie, it wouldn't feel right and I'd worry about making comparisons and expecting too much of the new pup, as she was such an awesome dog.

Everlong - not me. Pip isn't likely to be getting his second jab until next week and he's already 12 /12 weeks old - and getting really heavy.

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 27/08/2013 15:51

Oh what a morning! Took Olly for second injection, he pod in the car, my fault, I thought he'd finished in the garden, obviously not. Good job I had dog towels in the boot for him so no biggy. Got injection, no problem.

Then on general check discovered ear mites. Gross. So ears cleaned, gunk removed wormer, etc. kerrrrching! £122. Later, but that includes stronghold for puppy & big dog as well as everything else. Off to vets with big dog for boosters, kennel cough & ear check soon.

It's all about the dogs! Grin

moosemama · 27/08/2013 16:23

I nearly fainted when I went to pick up Pip's antibiotics and they charged me £105! Shock

Turned out the vet had sent his poo samples to an external lab, but as she hadn't informed me I wasn't expecting the extra expense. I was not impressed at all.

First vet bill for check up and discussion about lack of weight £60.00, a week later, second £105.00 and we haven't even had to pay for wormer or innoculations yet.

Have been trying to sort out insurance, but wanted a joint policy and it's Lurcherboy that's proving the problem, well that and all the hidden catches I keep finding in the small print. Think I'm going to end up going with either PetPlan or PetProtect, purely because I have experience of both and their cover is less dishonest. £££s though. Hmm

SallyBear · 27/08/2013 19:26

I am hoping that this works as I've just got a drop box app on my iPhone. Anyway this is a collage of Toby from 3 weeks to 9 weeks.

moosemama · 27/08/2013 19:45

Aw Sally he's so squidgeable. Grin

Pip's gained quite a bit of weight, but he's never going to have the squidge factor!

SallyBear · 27/08/2013 19:55

He certainly is squidgy. And has suddenly developed big feet since Sunday! I'm now thinking that he may end up being a bit like DS1; lanky and skinny with big feet!

SallyBear, those eyes! Awwwwwwwwww.

Spent about £30 at the vets today myself but it's nice to have Whippety boy slap bang up to date with Advocate and worming tablets before the new girl comes and got my Drontal liquid for her. They had liver pate for dogs in a tube as well, brilliant stuff, he's never gulped down a tablet so fast Grin Four days until we get our baby, eeek.

moosemama · 27/08/2013 20:24

Oldgirl had huge feet as a pup - hence her real name being Bear, as she was a black and tan, long coated GSD lookalike and we thought she was going to grow up to look like a great big bear. (She was actually a Belgian Shepherd (Terv) x Border Collie)

... and she had huge feet as an adult too. Grin She never did grow into them, so much so, people were still assuming she was a puppy when she was7/8 years old.

People keep telling me Pip's going to be huge, based on the size of his feet, but they don't seem that big to me really.

Lots of people have told me he reminds them of Bambi. Like Enzo, he's all lanky legs and regularly trips over his own feet or gets his legs in a knot when he's running. Grin

moosemama · 27/08/2013 20:25

Lost, my best advice is to get in four early nights and a few naps as well if you can fit them in. Those first few days are exhausting.

No-one knows everlong. He was found, along with his sister, literally in the gutter at the side of a road at less than 24 hours old. Sad

LostInWales · 27/08/2013 20:43

moosemamma I am racking up some seriously good lie ins whilst the holidays are still with us well that's my excuse anyway Grin.

Whippety boy had huge paws and he is now a very big whippet Wink

He was very lucky. Fortunately he was picked up by a lady who took him to the rescue and they were able to find him and his sister a surrogate mum.

In all probability though, he would have missed out on his mother's colostrum and as his surrogate mum was just weaning her pups, he had some natural milk, but not the high-fat, really nutritious first milk. That's why the vet is being very cautious about his immune system and delaying his second jabs. He's doing a grand job of fighting off the campylobacter though, so I think we're getting there.
