Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound :o).

Come The Day
Come the day I take that final bend,
Can I count on you to be my friend?
To see I?m treated just and fair,
It means so much to know you care.

For, what the future holds in store,
Now that I can race no more,
Should be addressed for every hound,
Who parts the punter from his pound.

Tell them I don?t ask for much,
A kindly word, a gentle touch,
Somewhere warm to lay my head,
A meal each day to keep me fed,
Not just life- but quality,
This is how it ought to be.

Do not see me swept away,
I long to live another day,
With peace of mind, tranquillity,
And those who care surrounding me,
So tell them all- you have that choice,
I beg of you to be my voice.

Waves back at Lost! DH has asthma and it doesn't stop any of the 4 hounds from sleeping on our bed Blush.

moosemama · 25/08/2013 21:19

I think it depends on the asthma Scuttle. Dh is actually allergic to dogs! He tested positive just after we started going out together when he was 16. His parents always had several dogs and cats (he's allergic to cats too) but he only developed asthma as an older teenager.

There was absolutely no way either of us was going to live without dogs in our lives and in fact we rescued our first ever dog together when we were 19. We found her half dead in a local park and she was by his side pretty much 24/7 from that day onwards, even secretly living in his uni accommodation on campus with him and all his mates. Grin

Fortunately, he's developed a tolerance to dogs after living with them for so long. Same can't be said for cats though, he really struggles if we visit someone who has cats in their house.

cantpooinpeace · 25/08/2013 21:20

Is this the right place to tell you all about my rescue greyhound??

She is beautiful & so mild mannered! I don't think she has a bark in her.

She is 2 & retired due to an Achilles injury. She is a grey/blue colour with a white chest, feet & tail tip.

I have waited a long time for her & have called her Heidi - love her too much already Smile

moosemama · 25/08/2013 21:23

Definitely the right place. Smile

Heidi sounds really lovely. How long have you had her?

Oh and of course we need photos. Wink

cinnamongreyhound · 25/08/2013 21:32

Dh has asthma generally but one of the triggers are his many allergies :(

Hi cantpooinpeace :) Heidi sounds lovely!

Scuttlebutter · 25/08/2013 21:58

Moose, your DH sounds like mine. He is severely allergic to cats and horses, and gets pretty sneezy/wheezy around longer haired dogs - this is the main reason we don't have lurchers Sad. Fortunately with greyhounds he is OK.

Welcome, cantpoo! Heidi sounds gorgeous. Lots of greys don't bark much.

moosemama · 25/08/2013 22:08

We've always had long-coated dogs. I think dh must be a sucker for punishment. The first dog I mentioned upthread was a massive long-coated GSD bitch. The really old-style big boned, enormous, thick coated GSD type. Just about the only one we've had that he wasn't as likely to be allergic to was our Soft Coated Wheaten girl.

Can't be much grey in Pip then - mouthy little monster that he is. Poor old Lurcherboy doesn't know what to make of him at all, because while he can be chatty (I'm told that's the Saluki in him) he only ever barks if there's a dog in the park right behind our fence and he only started that when the same dog kept throwing itself at the fence on it's walk every day. Pip barks right in his face to try and get him to play and he just looks at me, as if to say "What on earth is he making all that noise about?"

cantpooinpeace · 25/08/2013 22:21

We got her on Thurs for a trial but she is everything I wanted in a grey. She has been no problem yet just getting used to her new retirement home She's so gracefull & is great with the kids (6&8) can't be too careful obviously & have them supervised with her always.

Do I post a pic of her to my profile?

TheCunnyFunt · 25/08/2013 22:26

I'm the same as moose's and Scuttle's DH's, I'm terribly allergic to most furry things, I get sneezy, wheezy and my eyes run. I've never had an allergic reaction to Sprocket and it makes me so so happy to not be allergic to him :)

Welcome to the cushion cantpoo, Heidi sounds beauuuutiful! I love blue hounds! Photo's are madatory of course Wink

Only if you want to cantpoo. We love to see pictures, but understand if some people prefer not to put pictures online.

Sounds like she's found her forever home then. Lucky girl. Smile

TheCunnyFunt · 25/08/2013 22:32

Yes cantpoo, post a pic of her to your profile and then make your profile public.

That's why dh is worried about getting a lurcher rather than a greyhound, he just about copes with peanut but has to wash hands after he's touched him or face after being locked but he's worried if they're much hairier he won't. I was told a bedlington x would be ok but Tally or Iona don't look massively hairy.

We're going to visit Pie on Thursday as he's not too far from us. She said she's had 3 serious offers but no one has visited so far and others are waiting for a homecheck. He's due to be castrated next week so could get him 7th sept if we (and her) decide we want him.

I love beach walking and so does peanut LostInWales, never had much to do with whippets but I understand they're a bit more lively than greyhounds.

Peanut barks more than Nelly did but still very rarely!

LostInWales · 26/08/2013 10:28

I don't know if they are more lively, I may possibly have a lazy version but yesterday when DH and I were getting into our stride walking he sat down in a puddle and gave us such a look we put him back on his lead and took him home. Smile He's slept ever since apart from food of course! He has good enough recall to let off the lead though once we are far enough away from picnics and he runs like the wind bouncing in and out of tide pools and waves but after 30 minutes he's done.

mistlethrush · 26/08/2013 17:46

We've been away for a week in Shropshire - but couldn't take mistlehound as we (the group) take over a boarding school and play chamber music for the week. GReat fun but not dog friendly.

Mistlehound looked rather worried when we got home - but she's now relaxed and I think she's worked out that life's back to normal again.

I have managed to go for a decentish walk (speed wise) (but not length yet) without my ankle brace which is good news. Bit sore, but OK.

In Northumberland, MIstlehound had an hour to an hour and a half chasing rabbits in the dunes first thing, then walked most of most days on the beaches with us - with stops for refreshment - then had another 1.5 hrs or so at 9ish. Normally she has 1.5 main walk, and perhaps another 30 - 40 mins. I'm not sure that a non-lurcher pointy dog would happily copy with that degree of variation?

If you've got a spaniel, I don't think that any of the pointy hounds will cause you too many shedding issues!

Cinnamon has just rescued a greyhound that is cat friendly (or possibly cat afraid) so that's that misconception put to bed. I think that she probably lets him off the lead too although I'm not sure about that.

My lurcher would fit in very happily - her recall is not bad, she loves children, very happy to play whenever the chance comes up, but also happy to sleep on her bed or the sofa if there's nothing much happening. She will take as much exercise as you can throw at her, but can cope on a good walk and a small walk a day.

She's a lot more robust than a whippet without being as big as a greyhound which is quite a nice compromise.

cantpooinpeace · 26/08/2013 19:53

How do I view my profile on the MN app?

cinnamongreyhound · 26/08/2013 20:48

Hi MrsWolowitz! My first greyhound was fine with cats and my current one is too, we are also going visit another one Thursday who's in a foster home with a cat. I have four cats so it was important to me too. Some will chase its true but my girl was a successful racer who retired at almost 4 years old and chased cats while out and about but NEVER chased mine after careful introduction. Peanut is a wussy with any cat and also doesn't chase much outside but then he only had a few trials and wasn't good enough to race. I do let him off, I use liver cake as his incentive to come back but he doesn't like me out of sight either so that helps! He's very soppy! The longest we've been out walking without him stopping for a lay down is 1 1/2hrs but with a rest in between we've been out for 4 with a big play with sticks too. My girl would walk a reasonable distance but got very lazy as she got older. We are looking at a lurcher (visiting the greyhound to keep dh happy) as my boys want to play for much longer than peanut can manage! 15-20 mins chasin after them/a ball and he's had enough.

I really don't like the app cantpooinpeace, I use the mobile website so can't help you sorry.

So it looks like peanut was poorly :( mum said he was very quiet and walked at her leg the whole way Saturday evening but this morning he was at the end of his lead and he was so pleased to see us when we got home! Took him out this evening and he off, run up and down the path and played with me so glad to have my boy back Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 26/08/2013 20:48

How are you getting on with pip's infection moosemama?

mistlethrush · 26/08/2013 21:01

Ooh good that he's feeling better Cinnamon!

My lurcher would happily chase cats Blush but I know that there are lots that live with cats.

I don't use the ap either so can be of no use whatsoever.

cinnamongreyhound · 26/08/2013 21:05

Glad to hear you're walking more normally too mistlethrush and it sounds like a lovely week away. I used to play in an orchestra up until I finished my A levels but I almost never play now (clarinet) :(

mistlethrush · 26/08/2013 21:16

Its a bit of a shock to the system - because we were playing from 9am to about 10pm with some of the afternoons off... I have run out of fingerprints on the ends of my fingers. I'm surprised I don't ache more as I really need to do more practise to keep the muscles good!

moosemama · 26/08/2013 21:24

Can'tpoo, sorry I use the full website and am hopeless with anything modern and technical, hopefully someone more savvy than me will be along soon.

Ah poor Peanut. Glad he's feeling better now though.

Pip is going from strength to strength, thanks for asking cinnamon. He has had normal poos since the day after his first vet appointment (other than the time he managed to pinch PIL's cat's food before any of us managed to get there before him and lift it). He's still on chicken and probiotic paste, but we're adding in some Fish For Dogs training treats now, with no adverse effects. He's been on his antibiotics since last Wednesday as well and is steadily gaining weight. He's still very skinny, all ribs and hip pins, but he's lost the totally emaciated look he had when he first arrived. If the amount of energy he's got is anything to go by, I'd say he's almost there recovery wise. Smile

Pleased to hear you had a good week away Mistle. Sounds like Mistlehound was thoroughly spoiled and enjoying royalty status while you were away as well. It's such a load off your mind to know they're happy and well looked after while you're away.
