Cancelled insurance to swap it to another at the end of the month. Cheaper cover and better to come out just after payday.

5 years with not a single days illness. Not one vet visit.

Today he's only bloody ill.

Tummy all swollen and tender. 1 puke and 1 sloppy poo. Managed to eat his supper though.

Bloody git.

Hoping the vets goes well.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 28/05/2013 16:53

Oh no! Hope it's all well. I've had a dachshund and a half and they've really weak backs. Good luck.

AtYourCervix · 28/05/2013 17:36

Not good. Urgent scan tomorrow. ££££££££££.

Anyone want to buy a kidney?

cant you reinstate your old cover?

AtYourCervix · 28/05/2013 17:42

Could try but suspect they'd laugh.

CajaDeLaMemoria · 28/05/2013 17:43

I hope he's okay, and you aren't too out-of-pocket.

Give us an update when you've got time! I've got my fingers crossed that he's alright.

AtYourCervix · 28/05/2013 17:43

How much do you think a dog MRI will be?

And major spinal surgery?

OP posts:
CajaDeLaMemoria · 28/05/2013 17:45

Ah, cross-posted, sorry.

What are they thinking of?

It might be worth calling your old insurance, and seeing if they will let you pay up to continue cover?

Then just make sure that any paperwork from the vets shows that this predated you cancelling (unless it didn't, of course!) and you should be fine.

AtYourCervix · 28/05/2013 17:51

I cancelled on wednesday. He got ill thursday.

OP posts:
AtYourCervix · 28/05/2013 17:54

Why is it that every time you think you're ok. Pottering along and managing, something drastic happens.

OP posts:
moosemama · 28/05/2013 18:04

Oh no AYC, hope he's ok.

Is it being done at your vets or via specialist referral? Probably not your area, but you could call this specialist vets, who might be able to give you some idea of the costs involved.

tabulahrasa · 28/05/2013 18:05

I know a CT scan for my puppy's leg was about £800 and the cat's abdomen ultrasound and biopsy was about the same...so I'd guess about that for the MRI.

Keyhole surgery on the puppy's leg was 1800 + vat, but with the scan added in because they admitted him then and there. So not as good a guess, but a couple of thousand probably. Sad

Fairydogmother · 28/05/2013 18:06

Sorry to hear your dog isn't well

Op my one experience of spinal surgery was for a disc that collapsed and it cost upwards of £7k - sorry!

That was a v bad case tho

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 28/05/2013 18:08

There was something about this on Watchdog or one of those programmes recently. Eventually the new insurers stumped up because the dog had been insured with someone else before getting ill. It's done to stop people finding out their dog is sick then insuring it which clearly isn't the case with you.

I hope all turns out well for you.

AtYourCervix · 28/05/2013 18:09

Been referred to specialist.

Poor dog.

OP posts:
CajaDeLaMemoria · 28/05/2013 18:10

Ah, but if it's something spinal or organ-related, it's likely that the disease was present before the symptoms started showing.

If it's caused by an injury or allergy, you've got less chance, but it's worth talking to your vet about how long he is likely to have had his issues.

PavlovtheCat · 28/05/2013 18:14

Surely though, if you cancel your insurance, it is covered up the end of the month paid? You would normally need notice? Did your cover end on wed, or is that the day you cancelled it. It might be worth checking it there is a cancellation notice period, in which case you might be covered?

moosemama · 28/05/2013 18:31

Pavlov has a point there. Cover should continue for the month that you've paid up to, so he should still be covered by the original insurance company to the end of the month. It's definitely worth checking.

AtYourCervix · 28/05/2013 18:32

Have spoke to new policy people. If its an accident it's covered. If illness not covered. Depends what vet diagnoses.

Bollocks to the £££ though. What if he's permenently damaged?

OP posts:
tabulahrasa · 28/05/2013 19:12

Tell the vet about the insurance...I've found them very helpful with my uninsured cat, so while I'm sure they won't commit fraud or anything like that, if it's not cut and dried as to what's caused the issue they might be able to give a more definite opinion.

I hope it's nothing too serious.

AtYourCervix · 29/05/2013 05:47

I'm so worried.

OP posts:
saintmerryweather · 29/05/2013 06:58

what date did you cancel the insurance from? was it the renewal date?

AtYourCervix · 29/05/2013 07:05

Yes. The renewal date was 23rd. New insurance started from 24th, but doesn't cover anything in the first week.

The money doesn't matter though. I'lll find it.

Poor dog matters. Is getting worse. Can't walk at all this morning. Driving myself mad with what-ifs.

OP posts:
peggyblackett · 29/05/2013 07:40

Hope he's on the mend soon AYC. Poor boy.

saintmerryweather · 29/05/2013 07:51

my point is its a hell of a lot easier to reinstate from the renewal date than from a mid term point, it really would be worth seeing if you can uncancel your old policy and continue his cover. youve got a 14 day cooling off period with the new one anyway. my colleagues dog had to have an mri recently and she said it was 750
