What are we all doing with our dogs on this fine (ha!) morning?

I have two sighthounds and a balding terrier. Wind we deal with wind with coats if necessary. Rain - ditto. Gale forces winds and severe rain, um, no we stay indoors.

Poor puppy locked himself in the yard in the wee hours - que frantic howling and scrabling at the door until someone woke up to rescue him. He thinks he's had enough excitement for one day and is laying quietly in bed for the first time ever in his life Shock

I think I am going to stick to indoor training for today to keep them quiet. Maybe a short walk later of the wind or rain or both die down. Anyone else house bound today?

Another rain-hating ridgeback here. Stuck his nose out of the door first thing and refused to go out, hiding under his blanket so we couldn't see him.

The rain had temporarily cleared by the time I was back from the school run so we headed out, only to be drenched 2 minutes from home on the way back. He proceeded to run from tree to tree to try and avoid it? Wuss Grin

Hullygully · 24/09/2012 11:49

My dog is six and has never ever had a day without a walk no matter what.

I thought it was against the law not to walk them...?

LottieJenkins · 24/09/2012 11:51

I took Bumble for a walk through the woods across a very muddy ploughed field and then down a footpath then back along the road back to my house. I had my regatta coat on which was lovely and my sister has recently given me her lovely barbour hat. Bumble has a very fetching purple raincoat which came from Poundland but he didnt need it on today!!!

CakeExpectations · 24/09/2012 11:53

Another all-weather springer here. I headed for the forest this morning, as all the fields are flooded.

I did manage to gracefully slip over whilst navigating a muddy bank, then had to waddle back to the car and drive home wearing a half-body mudpack. How we laughed.

PersonalClown · 24/09/2012 11:57

A major water phobic Staffy refusing to set a paw outside here unless he is desperate and a Labradoodle who won't go for a walk if the Staffy isn't going to.

Curled up snoozy dogs here!

daisychicken · 24/09/2012 12:01

My collie doesn't care about the weather (whereas my old collie hated getting wet!) so we've been down the field... I was ankle deep in water with wet feet and wet jeans to the knees.... Dog had great fun racing round and splashing though the puddles! He's not so impressed at being confined to the kitchen till he dries off however!!

lilachair · 24/09/2012 12:03

Poor wonderdog has had a trip to the vet this morning after pooing a waterfall of blood and puking up water all over the bloody sofa this morning. He is now asleep. We are not going out today.

wiggofan · 24/09/2012 12:04

Just got back from 90 min walk with lab in torrential rain, it wasn't quite wet enough for him so he had a couple of swims in the river as well Smile, not muddy thank goodness, looks like he's just had a bath. I've ordered a heated towel dryer from lakeland for the utility room as can't go through another winter of soggy dog towels all over the house.

NotMostPeople · 24/09/2012 12:05

I did an hour in the driving rain with my two and a friend with her three. I may not have gone if I hadn't arranged to meet her tbh but I'm glad I did so I can be guilt free.

Am thinking of waterproof trousers.

PersonalClown · 24/09/2012 12:07

Sad Poor Wonderdog.
Nothing serious I hope lilachair?

pimmsgalore · 24/09/2012 12:08

we had a quick 30 min run round the block once DD was dropped off at school. We got absolutely soaked, now pimmsdog is lying by the radiator at the front door and when I said walkies to him he just played the I can't hear or see you game putting his paws over his head. Guess that is us for the day, although DD has a class this evening so he will need to go out again before being shut in his crate.

On a plus side I have never known him hop in the car as quick as he did this morning and then not want to get out the other end Grin

lilachair · 24/09/2012 12:14

personalclown I hope not. He nicked a pork chop bone on Friday and has not been right since. He has had a jab and has 2 lots of medicine, and I'm too keep an eye on him, Vet seems to think starving him today should mend him.

I was a wreck this morning when I thought he might die. He's 4 and he's never been ill before. I've manned up now twitter's told me this happens Grin

MrsRhettButler · 24/09/2012 12:15

I washed mine yesterday and he smells so lovely (for once) that I really don't want to take him out because he will smell horrible after.... But I'm being selfish because he really doesn't mind the rain so I'm planning on driving him to the field after lunch and I will open the car door and he will have a nice long run around whilst dd2 and I stay in the car nice and warm like :)

MrsRhettButler · 24/09/2012 12:20

I hasten to add I will get out of the car to pick up his poo! Grin

daisydotandgertie · 24/09/2012 12:24

LILACHAIR Not to scare or worry, but keep a very, very close eye on him. Is he eating and drinking as normal? Is he drinking more than usual?

There is a small posibility that his symptoms are caused by an internal blockage; the vomited water could point that way.

If he is sick again, or develops a temperature then I recommend you get straight back to the vet.

lilachair · 24/09/2012 13:07

daisy Thanks, I am still worried and keeping a close eye. He is on his bed under a blanket at my feet, and I wont be leaving him all day. Vet said to starve him today, and see how he goes tomorrow, give him maybe a tiny bit of fish, egg or chicken. He didn't eat yesterday at all, he is drinking a little more than normal. He's a lurcher (Grey x Saluki x Collie) and is prone to a sensitive tum, but he's never been like this.

He's not been sick since 8am, and has been drinking and weeing.

JethroTull · 24/09/2012 14:15

My boxer pup absolutely refused to move when I took him out this morning. I've had to physically move him into the back yard so he can pee. Any tips as I don't want him to not have a walk if it's raining!

D0oinMeCleanin · 24/09/2012 14:24

I tire mine out with training when the weather is truly dire Jethro. But mine are huge wimps. The two sighthounds howl when I make them go out in bad weather.

The terrier puts on a brave face, but shivers furiously, even with his coat on. Partly in an attempt to make me walk him back home out of guilt I think Wink

So far today we have done find the treat, worked on puppies down and stay, worked on leave it for all of them and tried to convince the terrier that sharing a bed with another dog will not harm him in anyway.

They're all sleeping now. They still haven't been to the loo. They will not step foot outside. Not even for chicken or pork.

Little sighthound does not like any weather bar mild and dry. Puppy can cope with rain, but not driving rain and 30mph winds it would seem. The terrier never howls or whines, he just plods along looking miserable and shivering, no matter which coat I put on him. If I let him off leash he goes and hides under a bush and refuses to come back out.

JemimaPuddle · 24/09/2012 16:13

As mine is a bit older now he'll happily sleep if not out walking. When he was younger I used to play inside or do some training to tire him out.
He still hasn't even had a wee today! I just tried to coax him outside again and got a look which said "try that shit again & I'm calling the cruelty man"

SrirachaGirl · 24/09/2012 16:27

We've had a lot of rain here too lately so I've been out in that with Lucy; she doesn't even notice that it's raining. Westie REFUSES to leave the house if it's even remotely damp so I don't bother trying anymore. She's much happier to be snuggled up by the fire when it's horrible out and burns off energy by wrestling with Lucy instead.

This morning it was sunny so I took the dogs to our favourite trail and swimming creek only to find that it was full of gigantic salmon trying to swim upstream! Some naughty fisherpersons had left salmon guts and heads all over the shore so the dogs were in ecstasy running around with fish bits and rolling on carcasses. Now they are very happily twitching by the fire...they stink but it might have been the best day of their lives EVER.

SpicyPear · 24/09/2012 18:24

I feel so much better about DDog not having a walk now. DF thinks I'm cruel and doesn't believe that she just will not go in the rain! I have to push her bum out the back door to even get her to go for a wee. If it starts when we are out she drags me all the way home Blush.

MrsRhettButler · 24/09/2012 21:53

I wish my dog hated the rain Grin

TheGOLDCunnyFunt · 25/09/2012 08:22

Yesterday morning we had a good walk, it was just drizzling so we didn't get soaked, we walked along the riverbank, I had my cup of tea to warm me up. It was great!

The afternoon however, the dog (greyhound) was bugging me to take him out, so I did. He was so excited and raced out the door. Then proceeded to miserably drag along behind me because of the rain. He had his coat on too! We both got drenched (me more than him I think). Took a while to dry out but luckily we had the fire lit.

D0oinMeCleanin · 25/09/2012 10:06

The terrier got out in the end yesterday. He wasn't especially happy about it but he went. The others would not leave the house for love nor money. It was half 6 by the time they admitted defeat and ventured outside for the loo.

Puppy has been for a run this morning and went absolutely nuts. He kept running mad figure of eights around me with this crazed look on his face like "must make up for lost running time. Must make up for lost running time...." Normally people use him to tire their dog out but the way he was behaving people took one look at him and leashed their dogs up to go somewhere else Blush. He did, eventually, find two totally stunning GSDs and an EBT daft enough to play chase me, chase me with him.

I don't understand how people manage to not walk their dog regularly. Mine were all climbing the walls last night despite me spending most of my free time playing games with them to keep them busy. I guess the dogs just get used to it in the end Sad

TheGOLDCunnyFunt · 25/09/2012 10:18

D0oin I know exactly what you mean, when Sprocket got bitten last month, he was only allowed a quick 10 minutes round the block. He's used to 90 minutes a day, he was climbing the walls with just 20 a day. AND he's a greyhound Shock

I can still recall the poster who said she only walked her large breed dogs a couple of times a week as that's all they needed and they were fine with that :(
