Cone on spayed dog.

Had my cavapoo spayed yesterday. Just wondered when it is safe to take horrible cone head off? She is trying to get at stitches and keeps trying to scratch. She is being such a good girl with the cone but I would like to take it off. When will the stitches be settled enough to take it off ?

You could try taking it off and see how she is with the stitches. If you are going to be with her continuously to monitor if she starts biting/licking you can always put it back on. I certainly wouldnt leave her alone or overnight without the cone on at the moment. You'll have to be really vigilant if you take it off her tbh.

Thanks. It is the little face peering out from the cone that is making me feel bad!

Is she utterly miserable with it on? Most dogs are but you really don't want to let her spay site get infected. I do feel so sorry for dogs in those cones though!!

Loveleopardprint · 30/08/2012 17:38

We just had wrestling match. Her taking it off then me putting it back on.
Tried to leave it off but she could not leave stitches alone.
She looks like a walking fluffy lamp!

You've done the right thing putting it back. The worst case is that she would lick the stitches out and need another op to put new ones in again. Don't let the sad eyes fool you!

Loveleopardprint · 30/08/2012 18:09

Thanks. Smile

Ooh the cone of shame ( as our vet commentated!)

And yes it's horrible seeing their little faces peering out looking so despondent...

Grin at walking fluffy lamp....

Must admit Blush we giggled when our boy got stuck in the door when wearing one once!

Hope she recovers quickly and the cone can be consigned to the bin!

Loveleopardprint · 30/08/2012 21:24

Thank you. She had now taken to those big doggy sighs as the woeful expression is not working.

The cat thinks it is hilarious Grin

My poor dog had a 'cone of shame ' for four weeks !

Loveleopardprint · 30/08/2012 22:03

Omg! Poor thing. I am hoping by 4 days it will be able to come off.

topknob · 30/08/2012 22:06

The cone is for a couple of weeks, or you can take it off and risk another vet visit for re-stitiching. They are used for a reason.

tazzle22 · 30/08/2012 22:06

oh my sprollie will be home tomorrow with one as she has had an op on her leg today. She had one for a while before and the saddest thing was when she would catch it when going through doorways Sad ..... the funniest in some ways was when she was trying to eat and the whole thing covered the bowl ........ we put the bowl on a small brick so she could reach the food properly !

so agree with others..... its awful but its better than tearing / licking stitches out !

TunaPastaBake · 30/08/2012 22:07

It wasn't for being spayed so you should be ok.

tazzle22 · 30/08/2012 22:07

oops pressed to soon ............. all the best to cavapoo

TunaPastaBake · 30/08/2012 22:08

Mine used to scoop leaves up in hers.

Loveleopardprint · 30/08/2012 22:38

Good idea with food bowl on a brick. I have been hand feeding her biscuits. Slightly high maintenance!

We used v cheap baby vests on our schnauzer when she was spayed..have to be careful re stitches not getting air but seemed to work for nighttime and walks out!

Wiggypigs · 30/08/2012 23:06

Have seen dogs chew there stitches and then eat their own intestines! Cones of shame are needed for a reason. As for cavapoo and sprollies Hmm crossbreeds!!

Loveleopardprint · 30/08/2012 23:20

Ok feel thoroughly told off. I will leave the cone on!!

I love my crossbreed!!!

OP posts:
Wiggypigs · 30/08/2012 23:28

Crossbreeds are the best :) can't beat a good mutt!

ceres · 31/08/2012 06:49

you can get inflatable collars as an alternative to the cone.

you can also use a towel to make a soft collar -

i used the towel collar for my staffy last year as he was really distressed by the cone, and the local pet shop didn't have an inflatable collar in his size. it worked really well and he actually seemed to like having it on.

PeriPathetic · 31/08/2012 08:43

My girl had a special vest from the vet. No cone for her. It was a really good idea - t-shirt material around her stomach held across her back with velcro straps.

She was still miserable though 'cos she's like that when 'clothed' - even a collar makes her sad.

She didn't fuss her scar at all until the day before the stitches were due out when she removed one herself.

tazzle22 · 31/08/2012 23:35

thats interesting about the alternative collars.... will definately investigate as she HAS to have it on and not just for the stitches. Pooch came home with fentanyl patches on top of her tail for analgesia that have serious consequences if she licks / chews / eeeek

Whats the matter with x breeds wiggypoos ?. Many x breeds are far healthier than a heck of a lot of "pure breeds" with all their inbreeding and inherited traits. Problems with hips and other joints, eyes ( sight as well as structural), back problems in long backed dogs, birthing problems with large headed breeds, etc etc etc. Actually its a whole different thread so I whether its a deliberate choice or not ( in our case she was a rescue so who knows ?????) perhaps we best keep comments like that off this thread Wink

sorry got your name wrong Wiggypigs ... I have sight problems where I can only see a general word shape and often make errors in irregular words.
