My little puppy is very ill, have been to the vets where she had two injections which I think may have been antibiotics and two water injections???

She isn't eating or drinking anything not even tasty chicken which she usually loves.
I just want to know if there is anything I can do to help her in anyway until we go back to the vets tomorrow.

If she's not drinking at all, could you try gently syringing some water into her mouth? Be careful not to squirt it into her throat though. Or even just moistening her lips.

WTFwasthat · 29/08/2012 21:29

where was pup from missy? How old is she? Can you callthe breeder or wherever you got her from? What breed?

missyborry · 29/08/2012 21:36

She's around 11 weeks, I had her at 8 weeks but I suspect she was a little bit younger. Cross breed of Whippet and Jack Russel. No longer have the breeders number but don't think she would be of much help anyway Sad, I have tried giving her a little water and she just brings it back up. She looks so sad and lost.

In the last 10/15 mins she has been sick three times, poor thing. I just don't know what I can do to help her or even if I can.

Phone the vet. She is too young to muck about, and pups that young go downhill very fast.

Ringing the vet for advice will not cost anything and they are best placed to decide whether or not you need to take her back in. I wouldn't hesitate.

WTFwasthat · 29/08/2012 21:57

oh poor baby Sad. Fuck these back yard breeders. Fuck them all Sad

WTFwasthat · 29/08/2012 21:58

could it be worms?

missyborry · 29/08/2012 22:16

I have been on the phone to the vet four times today as well as taking her there, she went at 3.15pm, and have a follow up app for 3.30pm tomorrow (earliest they could do). The vets are now closed so don't know who to ring??

WTF I am thinking it could be worms as she was 'apparently' wormed the day before we got her and they said to follow it up in four weeks which would be next week, thinking next Tuesday as we got her on Wednesday.

Was given worming tablets today, vet recommended giving half a tablet, which she spewed back up, so gave her the other half and again she was sick, she is having worming drops?? tomorrow so that will be sorted then.

She just look uncomfortable still, even having a little yelpy bark now whenever she is sick, which I think is due to the amount of times she has been sick already and is hurting her throat Sad.

And now she's been sick in her last clean bed Sad the other has been washed but is still wet and is made of foam so can't be tumbled.

Are you eligible for housing benefit, etc? If so, you could phone the PDSA. They have 24 hour cover.

She really doesn't sound well. At all. She's so very little too.

PeriPathetic · 29/08/2012 22:24

That's a lot of sick for such a tiny young pup. She sounds very unwell and if I were you I would be looking for a vet urgently.

Happydaze · 29/08/2012 22:29

Does your vet have an emergency out of hours vets practice they use?

Perhaps google your area, there must be one?

We have had to use this service in our area in the past and never felt it was unnecessary, even if just for peace of mind, you sound so worried Sad and you little pup sounds so poorly I wouldn't hesitate to get in touch with the nearest one...

Hoping your pup gets better very soon x

happygardening · 29/08/2012 22:33

Vets have to provide a 24 hour service call them they will either answer the phone or provide a number you call out of hours .

Samvet · 29/08/2012 22:34

All vets have to have an out of hours service by law so if you phone there will be a number on the answer machine. It is not acceptable for the puppy to wait until tomorrow afternoon. This is an emergency. Is the puppy vaccinated? If not then parvovirus is a worry. The puppy should be admitted and on a drip of she can't keep anything down. Call vets for advice now. If vets can't see dog until tomorrow afternoon then change vets, again by law they have to see an emergency asap. Change vets if you are not happy. At that age parvo is a worry and your puppy could deteriorate significantly overnight.

daisydotandgertie · 29/08/2012 22:37

Phone your vet. There will be a 24 hour emergency number.

It is so important. If your vet won't see you, look up the number for another one. No vet would willingly allow an animal to suffer; and your puppy sounds very ill. It doesn't matter how many times you've been in touch with them today already, the dog needs to be seen by a vet asap.

midori1999 · 29/08/2012 22:44

I am hoping you have already seen a vet and your puppy is OK. Sad

As has been said, you will be able to see an out of hours vet and this really is urgent, not least as the puppy seems to have come from somewhere that may not have given her the best of care. Sad

missyborry · 29/08/2012 23:04

I have phoned the out of hours vets who have advised to stick to my original appointment tomorrow as they are busy Hmm. Checked the PDSA site too but the nearest vets who accept are 15 miles away, don't drive so can't get there. I will phone the vets in the morning and try and get her an earlier appointment.
Thanks all x

I'm not saying that the people who first had her were bad, just pretty clueless tbh, the mum had got out and got pregnant. The girl was quite young (about 19/20) so she didn't have the slightest idea about pups really. I don't think she would be the slightest bit interested that my pup is ill as she just wanted them gone because she couldn't cope with them all, there were 5 all together and she looked really stressed.

I have tried again with water and chicken but she is really not interested, on a more positive note her nose which was quite dry this afternoon feels a bit wetter now.

OP posts:
hellymelly · 29/08/2012 23:17

a puppy could get dangerously dehydrated if not keeping any water down, did you tell them how frequently she is vomiting? I am worried they won't see you 'til tomorrow, she could need to go on a drip if this goes on.

missyborry · 29/08/2012 23:23

Helly I explained that she wasn't keeping anything down, said she has been sick a lot, even dry heaving etc.., I also mentioned that she seems worse since having the injections at the vets earlier but the person I spoke to said that he was rushed off his feet and needed to end the call quite abruptly due to another sick animal. He did say to stick to the app. I have for tomorrow but I will phone first thing. I slept on the sofa last night to be with her so I'll do the same tonight, the vets open at 8am so I will ring them then. I last spoke to them at 6.45pm just before they closed so they are aware that she was/is still being sick so hopefully they will see her asap.
Sorry if there's a large time gap between posts, I do appreciate everyone's time/care/answers but I am sitting with the pup.
Thanks again x

Fucking backyard breeders.

Pup needs to be seen tonight. Go to nearest vets and bang on the door, someone will be there. An overnight drip might be the difference between life and death in such a little one. :(

hellymelly · 29/08/2012 23:29

How scary and worrying for you and poor puppy. Sounds as though the vet had a major emergency to deal with but puppies like babies can easily dehydrate. Call again if she really isn't improving, but how will you get there? Can you get a taxi? Or a friend to drive you? Keep giving fluid, from a syringe is good as you can keep track of what is going in. Look online for the recipe for rehydtrating fluid , as that will do a better job than water. I think its a tablespoon of sugar and a teaspoon of salt to one pint of cooled boiled water.

missyborry · 29/08/2012 23:35

Helly I'll get a taxi not actually sure where they are but it was a local number! I will look up the recipe for rehydrating fluid, never heard of it before! Clever Hellymelly lol! I'm using my little one's medicine dosing syringe atm as that is all I have, she doesn't want it though, keeps them teeth firmly clamped shut! It's just worrying as she is usually just a jumping naughty bundle of cuteness!

AllOverIt · 29/08/2012 23:35

Forget the food for now. Liquid is the most important thing. I agree that she needs to be seen tonight.

Syringe fluids in a few drops at a time. Do you have any dioralyte? Might be worth stringing this in a 24 hour Tesco would have some...

AllOverIt · 29/08/2012 23:36

'trying' not stringing!
