Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

I have 5 dogs, 2 are ex racing greyhounds, amazing dogs :) Lana is 7 she's brindle and came to us 2years ago in a terrible state, she's come a long way and is now loving life. Rosie is 5 she's black with a white chest and toes, full of beans.

Scuttlebutter · 21/11/2012 17:11

I'm Shock and Angry for you. I know how much you were looking forward to this. DH was really excited too - I was telling him all about it on our walk this morning, and he wanted me to tell him as soon as you had pics/video up. Sad

Did the idiot/muppet who "sold" the field idea to you realise you have large, healthy FAST sighthounds with all four legs working, not (and no disrespect intended) a bunch of arthritic Pekes from the Darby and Joan Home for Elderly Lapdogs? Grrrrrr.

Scuttlebutter · 21/11/2012 17:13

Sorry, my post was for Cunny, no disrespect intended, 5hounds. Welcome!! Hmm, they sound gorgeous! Pics are welcome. Cough, cough. That was a hint. Wink What are the others?

5hounds · 21/11/2012 17:33

:) im on my phone so not sure how to upload photos. Also have a basset hound, a German shepherd x rottie and a 5 month old Staffordshire bull terrier

MerryCunnyFuntingChristmas · 21/11/2012 18:46

What's bizarre though is when I got in touch with them I said I have a non-recalling Greyhound with a high prey drive Confused he said it was fine, no mention of the teeny ditch.

Welcome 5hounds, quite a mix you have there, they all sound gorgeous!

SpicyPear · 21/11/2012 19:35

That's a shame cunny. I often fantasize about buying a big secure field for the dogs, maybe we could go halvsies?

MerryCunnyFuntingChristmas · 21/11/2012 20:13

Me too Spicy, there's a MASSIVE playing field near my house and me and my friend have agreed that whichever one of us wins the lottery first we're going to buy said field and put a big fence all the way around and give keys to all the decent dog owners :)

It's the best day dream ever :o

Scuttlebutter · 21/11/2012 23:50

Ooh, yes, I have that dream too. Grin A beautiful paddock with lovely high fencing round it, and inside there is a picnic table so I can invite greyhound chums for BBQs and picnics in the summer with their hounds.

Have sent off my deposit tonight for our dgo training classes with the Norty Minx. We are starting in two weeks - it is a six week course, three weeks before Christmas and three weeks after. Am getting excited and bit nervous. Grin

SpicyPear · 22/11/2012 00:03

Oooh we start puppy classes on Monday scuttle. Am also a bit nervous, mainly that he'll spend the whole time trying to get all the other owners to pet him.

mistlethrush · 22/11/2012 05:52

I have been considering classes - just to help out with the getting used to dogs as much as anything. Apparently she's been left at home on her own a few times - including when DH had to take DS the dentist (very close) and was fine....

MerryCunnyFuntingChristmas · 22/11/2012 18:13

Scuttle I am assuming that the picnic and BBQ area will be secured from pointy noses? Imagine putting your sausages on your plate, turning round to get some salad, only to turn back to your plate to find it is now empty Shock :o

MerryCunnyFuntingChristmas · 22/11/2012 18:22

Good luck with the classes Spicy, I hope they go well :) let us know how they go!

I'm looking forward to hearing how Norty Minx does at school, you'll have to keep us updated on her progress Scuttle :)

Mistle I think classes are good for socialisation, so I've heard anyway. It's worth considering at any rate!

MerryCunnyFuntingChristmas · 22/11/2012 21:29

Nearly wetting myself at this :o someone posted it on the LFT FB page.

Christmas Tree Decorating for Greyhound Owners.

Carefully choose your tree.
Eyeball up the room for best place to put tree out of the path of mad dogs.
Place tree in location least likely to attract mad dogs.
...Stifle scream when inevitable crash occurs.
Set tree upright and move to second location.
Get sturdy ladder.
Tell husband to kindly leave room.
Climb ladder to start at top of tree. Stop.
Scramble down ladder and remove star from Greyhound's yap.
Start over. Climb back down ladder and chase greyhound through house to retrieve extension cord
Climb back up ladder. Hang four ornaments. Jump off 5th step of ladder and attempt to beat greyhound to the tinsel box.
Tell husband to pipe down - everything's just dandy.
Climb back up ladder. Hang half a dozen more ornaments. Come back down ladder and step on greyhound who was NOT there 2 seconds ago.
Throw away empty treat box and continue to sooth offended dog.
Decide top half of tree looks just fine half naked.
Tell husband you really don't need his help.
Continue decorating tree while performing intricate leaps and dance steps that would put a 17 year old in traction in order to avoid greyhound.
Stop to ponder how greyhound manages to migrate under your feet no matter where you happen to be.
Screw up next intricate dance step and open second box of treats.
Tell husband that you not only don't need his help, you don't appreciate his running commentary.
Grab remaining ornaments, wipe off dog slobber, and place carefully on tree by throwing them at the tree. Keep ornaments that catch - pitch ones that don't.
Kick empty ornament containers down stairs.
Three parts vodka, wave tonic bottle at glass.

Repeat last step until headache recedes.

:o

That should be LGT.

Arseface · 22/11/2012 22:29

Just before we http://www.buzzfeed.com/shanrstew/20-greyhounds-bundled-for-winter-7x1g snuggle up for bed!

Arseface · 22/11/2012 22:29

Oops!

snuggle up

MerryCunnyFuntingChristmas · 23/11/2012 09:10

Nawww :) that number 7 does not look happy though!

SpicyPear · 23/11/2012 09:18

Thanks cunny. He has some issues with concentration when anything else is going on so it will be, er, interesting!

MerryCunnyFuntingChristmas · 25/11/2012 17:46

I went to our christmas market today to help out on LGTs stall, I ended up holding Timmy, a black boy who is the spitting image of Sprocket, from his nose to his socks! He's just smaller than Sprocket. It was his first meet and greet so he was quite nervous, he threw up 3 times and did 2 liquid poos, the second one I saw the signs so we went and hovered over a drain and the clever boy squatted and pooed in exactly the right place so it all went in the drain and we didn't need to scrape it up :o we rinsed off the drain cover and that was that!

Scuttlebutter · 25/11/2012 18:09

Ooh, well done Cunny, sounds like developing expertise there. Poor old Timmy though, not nice being sick and having runny poo at a Christmas market when the air is ripe wiht sausages. I love Christmas markets.

We have had an eventful couple of days Grin On Friday we went to a seminar on using social marketing down in Swansea. It was very good and I learned a lot and really enjoyed it. When we came home a scene of devestation met our eyes. Someone (we think Norty Minx) had ripped open our sofa (sobs)and the cushion beneath and had liberally scattered cushion stuffing through the downstairs of the house so it looked like we were filming a Christmas advert. Shock Sofa cushion is now very poorly (whispers: we may have to PTS the cushion).

On the bright side though we went on a lovely but wet sighthound walk today up at a very nice Forestry Commission place just inside the Brecon Beacons National Park, and Norty Minx and DH also went for a run this afternoon, so both are very happy. And also nice is that we are taking Norty and Callie to the Four Paws Rescue Christmas Dog Show in December as there is also cake Smile They do a lovely thing called Paws for Tea where you go along to meet all their gorgeous doggies and eat home made cake - I can't imagine anything nicer!

Scuttlebutter · 25/11/2012 18:15

Oh, and I LOVE the Christmas Tree Decorating Poem. I am looking forward to this year - in previous years, Andy, Boola and Booty were very, very good - the only problem was the occasional tail swipe. This year, with Minx, Callie and Mick we are in for a few surprises I think. Grin

MerryCunnyFuntingChristmas · 25/11/2012 19:25

Oh no! Do you think the cushion is reparable? Those Norty hounds.

Your walk sounds lovely and so does the dog show! I like cake :o

Can't wait to put our tree up, but we can't decide where put it out of the way of an agile toddler and Sprocket, although I don't know how interested he'll be in it. Should be fun finding out :o

Lougle · 25/11/2012 21:17

I decided to see how Patch would take to wearing clothing I only have girls Grin

Scuttlebutter · 25/11/2012 23:23

Lougle, real men are confident in their innate masculinity. Think of Jean Reno (fans self) - even in a pink tutu you'd be still overwhelmed by the testosterone fuelled manliness. So Patch can continue to wear pink with pride. Smile

Lougle · 26/11/2012 07:10

Hmm, pride didn't exude, tbh. More, a look of bemused sufferance as I asked for each paw to put in the arm holes.
