Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

TheCunnyFuntOfEastwick · 31/10/2012 11:27

Oops, try this instead :)

mistlethrush · 31/10/2012 12:52

I've had some recommendations on what we can do to make sure that fosterdog doesn't develop full-blown separation anxiety - one of them is to sort out a place we can leave her, even for parts of the day so that she gets used to not always being in the same room - and a dog gate has been recommended - has anyone got one that they could recommend?

TheCunnyFuntOfEastwick · 31/10/2012 13:38

mistle we just have Lindam baby gates due to having a toddler, never occured to us to get pet gates! We have an extending metal one on the bottom of the stairs, and in the kitchen door we have the gate that Asda sells cheap when they have a baby event. Can't think what it's called though.

Try looking on Amazon and read some reviews :)

MagratGarlik · 31/10/2012 15:01

We have the lindam pet gate, which I think is exactly the same as the extra tall baby gate separating out utility room off as woody doesn't like going in there with the door closed, but the gate means we can quickly put the dogs away before e.g. answering the front door (and risk having them seeing cat across the road or similar and making a dash for it). We also find it useful to separate them when hey are eating.

The gate works well (we got it from Amazon), but as i say, I think is exactly the same as the extra tall baby gate.

MagratGarlik · 31/10/2012 15:02

Excuse the typing, stupid phone!

CMOTDibbler · 31/10/2012 17:17

We are now officially pointy owners - I've been away for a week on business, and dh and ds picked up Jake on Saturday, so I've come home today to them all. For a dog who has never lived in a house, he has got the hang of everything very quickly, including now coming down the stairs. He was unmoved by the horses, other dogs running round him, and loves sleeping in the car. The cats have identified him as a source of heat, and are therefore sleeping with him.
Dh has bought him 3 coats already Hmm. We realised how big he is when measuring for these as he is a 32"

TheCunnyFuntOfEastwick · 31/10/2012 19:10

Congratulations CMOT!! 3 coats already? Wow :o he'll soon have a collection of gorgeous collars too no doubt Wink I love the cats sleeping with him, does he like them or does he just ignore them? 32? That is massive! I thought Sprocket was big at 30" :o

CMOTDibbler · 31/10/2012 19:20

Just the one brocade martingale collar atm, and a plain house collar, but several have been identified as future purchases.
He seems to like the cats - sometimes if they move fast he wants to chase them a bit, but cat1 turns round and gives him the evils, and he gets a sad face and slinks off.
We didn't realise that he had actually been at the rescue since March, and no one had expressed any interest in him Sad - probably as he's so big, and is plain black. Their loss as he is so incredibly chilled at home

MagratGarlik · 31/10/2012 19:34

Shit - major emergency n the Garlik household. Woody and Jessie got hold of the main Mars bars intended for the trick or treaters. They've eaten about 12 of them and Woody's face and body has stolen up, like an allergic reaction. Do has rushed him to the emergency vet. He looked terrible. I hope he is going to be OK.

Ds2 is distraught but Jessie seems fine. I hope the vet sees him on time Sad

MagratGarlik · 31/10/2012 19:35

Sorry, crap typing there again. I really need to find he damn stylus for my tablet.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 31/10/2012 19:53

Oh no, you poor things. It's easily done... bag by the front door and so on. When we had Garibaldi gate with Billy the vet said the number of dogs they get in for the same thing over Xmas (mince pies on coffee tables at Xmas drinks, chocolate in the stocking and on the tree etc etc) is massive.

Poor greedy old thing. I guess they'll keep him in for a good old flush out and he'll be back home and ready for his own bed in no time. ((hugs)) to you all.

CMOTDibbler · 31/10/2012 20:04

Oh no, hope they're OK Magrat

MagratGarlik · 31/10/2012 20:05

Just heard from dp that he (woody, not Dp) has been given antihistamines and steroids. Seems it was an allergic reaction - which means he fits right in with the ds's who have a massive long list of allergies each.

Thanks, Betsey, hug appreciated.

MagratGarlik · 31/10/2012 20:05

Thanks CMOT.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 31/10/2012 20:17

Phew, are they keeping him in?

Are you insured?

And congratulations CMOT - Jake's got a home for Christmas and forever! Yippee!

MagratGarlik · 31/10/2012 20:32

They are on their way home again with instructions to give antihistamines every 8 hours, so that means someone has to be up at 4am to give him some!

It also means that tomorrow's special half term day trip out is postponed in order to stay home, but at least he's OK so that is a minor inconvenience.

The vet said she had never seen one so swollen. He looked like a Labrador!

I am normally fairly vigilant with not leaving food around, but it was left near the door for no more than 15 mins whilst I took the boys to the neighbours for trick or treating.

MagratGarlik · 31/10/2012 20:33

Yes, we are insured. Thank goodness

MissBetseyTrotwood · 31/10/2012 20:56

What a horrible shock it must have been to see the wrappers everywhere. I'm so glad he's on his way home.

MagratGarlik · 31/10/2012 21:28

He ate the wrappers too! He only left the big main bag they were in on the floor. The vet said the amount of chocolate he ate was not a big problem (as Mars bars don't have much anyway), but he is clearly allergic to something.

I think we are going to be discovering transit time of Mars bar wrappers through a whippet gut for several days to come.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 31/10/2012 21:43

Now that's classy.

Big pack of tissues and a bottle of water on tomorrow's walk then? Grin

BehindLockNumberNine · 31/10/2012 21:49

Blimey Margrat, what a scare!! Glad he is ok and back home.

Here all is well, sorry I have not been on for so long, been preoccupied with a college project I am doing via work. It is eating into my free evenings.

Sam is doing fab, we took him trick or treating with dd and her best friend and her best friend's dog (a battersea jack russel cross). Dd and dh made bat wings which we safety pinned to Sam's coat. Sophie and her dad had made a shark's fin which was gaffa-taped to Bo's coat. Then the girls dressed up and off we went. Grin
Dd is now having s sleepover at best friend's house and tomorrow both girls are off to pony camp for the day (where there will be a fancy dress ride amongst other things)
I am off to Berlin tomorrow. It is the first anniversary of dad passing away this weekend so my sister and I are going to Berlin with mum so that mum is not sitting home alone remembering... Should be a bittersweet few days away...

Hope all is well with you all, Betsey, dh was asking after you and yours the other day and Ems sends hugs to Billy x

MagratGarlik · 31/10/2012 22:35

Thanks, Lost.

Sounds like quite a productive Halloween you've had there. DP wanted to make Woody into a bat, but they've both been a bit scared going out in the evening with all the fireworks the last few nights.

Scuttlebutter · 31/10/2012 22:44

Magrat, that sounds awful. Sending you all hugs and woofs for a speedy recovery.

Hope all goes well in Berlin with your mum, Lock.

CMOT - welcome! Cough, shuffles feet, erm, can we mention pictures? As in, hint hint? As in WE WANT TO SEE PICS OF NEW BOY. Grin

MagratGarlik · 31/10/2012 22:51

Thanks Scuttle. He's still looking swollen and sorry for himself, but not so bad as when it first happened. (Only in our house does even the dog suffer from allergies).

I also hope thing go OK in Berlin for you, Lost.
