Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

Jake
I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!

Well, the result is..... Jake is totally uninterested in the cats. Totally. So, instead of just a flying visit, he's having an overnight stay with us
DH took him for a walk while ds and I were at the stables, and he is also bored rigid by other dogs (even barking ones) and squirrels.
Right now, he's dozing in the sun by the patio doors.
Now we need to go and buy a huuuugggggeeee dog bed as we hadn't anticipated that they would offer the overnight visit !

Hello Pointy Hound people.

Could you answer a question for me please. Why do greyhounds (are they the big ones?) wear such wide collars? I often see some being walked from a local rescue and they all have a very specific design of wide collar.

Just wondering.

TIA

Scuttlebutter · 20/10/2012 15:44

Hi, Exit. Greyhounds, whippets and lurchers have tiny heads proportionally and very long necks. "Normal" dog collars don't fit them very well as they can (with elegant ease) simply reverse out of them. In addition, greyhounds can go from practically comatose to 45 mph pretty much from a standing start- a narrow dog collar would place a huge amount of stress on a tiny part of the neck, and sadly has led to dogs losing their lives.

Similarly, sighthounds should NEVER be walked with those bastard extending leads - again, it's the principle of a fast, accelerating dog with pressure then on a tiny and thin lead - can lead to neck breaks or the lead snapping - neither is good.

So, you'll usually find that out on walks, sighthounds will either be wearing a traditional leather sighthound collar, or what is very popular these days, martingale collars. These are wider fabric ones, but are lined with soft satin, and have a sturdy inner core so are beautifully strong.

Around the house, many greys simply wear what is known as a tag collar (just to carry ID), and many have gorgeous tassels etc. See here for a typical taste of collars... Grin

One of the main attractions of greyhound ownership is the collar porn. Blush

Oooh CMOT it's going well then? I am pleased! I hope all goes well tonight, you never know, they might not bother to take him back from you Wink

Squeeee!!! Gorgeous!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 20/10/2012 20:00

CMOT that dog's staying. You know it. Grin Grin Grin

Time to get him registered with Fast Friends.

So, we're 4 days into Zylkene in preparation for fireworks night and a couple rounds of the bastarding things just went off. Billy did his piece whining and scratching the floor (I was in the bath, stairgate on so no danger of a DS2 bed invasion) but has calmed down much more quickly. Before, he'd be charging around the house for about half an hour afterwards but he settled almost immediately. Could it be working so fast? It's blardy dear so I'm glad it seems to be working.

We got given a firework conditioning CD free with it but we don't have a CD player. DH is a professional musician and we don't have a CD player. Confused

My vet has a free lending library of CDs of sounds pets find scary!

CMOTDibbler · 20/10/2012 20:14

Betsey, can you not play the CD through the PC ?

We will def be adopting him Grin. He has decided to go upstairs and snore on the landing in the dark currently. Cat2 is sleeping on the blanket put down by my feet for him.

He will have to go back to the kennels temporarily, as we haven't had a home check from them, and picking him up forever next Saturday would be perfect as dh and I are off for 10 days between us, which would work great.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 20/10/2012 21:06

Ah, sadly my MacBook is about 6 years old and one of the DSs kindly fed something into the CD drive when they were much littler. It takes the CD but won't play it and when the CD ejects it's helpfully scratched.

It's so annoying - we have super swish amp and speakers and no CD player. Maybe I could find something in itunes actually...

Ooh and upstairs on the first night! That is going some - what a dog! Grin

TheCunnyFuntOfEastwick · 20/10/2012 21:07

Betsey as CMOT says, put it in your laptop :o I downloaded fireworks off itunes, and I play them through my docking station. Sprocket seems fine with it so far :)

CMOT it sounds like he feels like he's home already :) fab that he can climb stairs!

TheCunnyFuntOfEastwick · 20/10/2012 21:10

Ahh xposts. Off itunes I got 'Calm Pet', I got the fireworks, fireworks with crowd noise and thunderstorm. There's a whole album of sounds!

AndWhenYouGetThere · 20/10/2012 21:21

Hi ladies - I know of a 14 week old whippet X who is in need of a home through Greyhound Rescue West of England... she's too young for kennels so they are looking for a foster/permanent home.

Please PM me if you know anyone who can help (I'll pass on details of the original ad/plea from GRWE posted in a bike forum DP uses)

TheCunnyFuntOfEastwick · 20/10/2012 21:33

Ohh I have an update on my cousin! The tumour is benign! Yay! But the liver specialist is keeping an eye on it apparently. Hopefully it'll stay that way :)

mistlethrush · 20/10/2012 21:40

We did find that was one of the benefits of a dog going deaf in old age - blissful ignorance of loud explosions nearby!

Mind you, the first dog I remember (who was a pointy of little brain) positively liked fireworks - she had to be put on the lead otherwise she would have gone right up to them (we only had her out as she was desperate to see what was going on)

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul · 20/10/2012 22:35

Scuttle thanks for the explanation. I love "elegant ease".

But Sad at life loss due to collars.
