Hi.
My dog hasnt been drinking since monday. Was not eating but has started up again.

Been to vets on tues and today, she is old and because of her age they refuse to test as it is age.
She is passing urine.

I have had her 10 years and.want her to get well. Does anyone have an idea of whats wrong?

If no improvment this weekend, she will go back to the vets.

Thanks.elephants.

Could be a kidney problem?

Elephantscantdothemoonwalk · 13/07/2012 20:07

I have no idea. She is asleep on my bed at the moment. She isnt wanting to go for walks etc.

As they get older their organs start to give up, in the end my very greedy golden retriever was not eating, that is when I knew it was 'time'.

How old is your dog?

Elephantscantdothemoonwalk · 13/07/2012 20:16

She is 11 ginger

Hi Elephants, I don't know the answer but just want to say I'm sorry to hear of this. I wonder if you can try adding some chicken broth or something into the water, to give it some flavour, in case she would prefer that? Also if you feed dry food, you could soak it in water, or feed wet food, so that she is getting some moisture from that. You can check for dehydration by pulling the skin up between the shoulder blades; it is meant to go back quickly, and if it doesn't that can be a sign of dehydration. I think you can also tell from looking at the gums. If she is dehydrated then I would take her back to the vet. Hopefully one of the vets on here will be along with some advice. Wishing you all the best.

GingerWrath · 13/07/2012 20:21

What breed is she? I second adding some sort of flavouring to the water.

GrimmaTheNome · 13/07/2012 20:22

What does she eat?

Perhaps you could make her some 'wet' food. When our dog had a bad tummy and we had to keep him hydrated, I boiled some chicken bits in water, stripped the meat, skin and fat off the bones(which were discarded), then overcooked rice in the stock so it absorbed way more water than usual.

GrimmaTheNome · 13/07/2012 20:24

As to water - if she normally will drink tap, try rainwater (there should be some around!) - most dogs much prefer it.

Elephantscantdothemoonwalk · 13/07/2012 20:24

She is a beegle.
Where can i get the flavourings?

OP posts:
RedwingS · 13/07/2012 20:25

Like Grimma says, you can make some if you have some chicken in the fridge. I should have added, if using a tin of soup to add flavouring - make sure it doesn't have onion or garlic in, as dogs can't eat those.

GrimmaTheNome · 13/07/2012 20:26

Don't use 'flavourings' - they are almost bound to be salty. Bones boiled in water is probably how to do flavoured water for dogs.

RIZZ0 · 13/07/2012 20:28

Does she like milk? If I can't get my terrier to drink anything I add a splash of milk and he drains the bowl.

Hope she improves.

GrimmaTheNome · 13/07/2012 20:29

If you don't have chicken, fish works too.

RIZZ0 · 13/07/2012 20:29

by anything I meant to say, water.

daisyrain · 13/07/2012 20:32

Sainsburys do Wagg dog gravy granules.
Mine wont eat his Iams without it. He is 12 x

Rikalaily · 13/07/2012 20:32

Have you tried ice-cubes? Alot of dogs love licking at them, you could make a big one by filling an icecream tub with water and freezing it, you could add a little fruit juice to sweeten it up a bit.

sianc80 · 13/07/2012 20:40

My cat gets frequent kidney infections, to encourage her to drink I add half a baby stock cube (much lower in salt) to a pint of water. Wouldnt advise for the long term but until you can get her to the vets?

Elephantscantdothemoonwalk · 13/07/2012 20:50

I will go to the butchers and see if he has some chicken bones for
Shall try ice cubes for her. he r. No sainsbos near me. Can i get them on there website?

RedwingS · 14/07/2012 20:08

How is she today, Elephants?

Elephantscantdothemoonwalk · 14/07/2012 21:44

Still not drinking. Tried the chicken bone stock but she just sniffed ot.
She went for.a walk though :) which is a a improvkent.

OP posts:
RedwingS · 14/07/2012 21:52

That's a shame. Glad she managed a walk though. I don't know what would cause it, but I'll be thinking of you x

Elephantscantdothemoonwalk · 14/07/2012 21:59

The thing im scared about is the vet might want to put her to sleep. She has been here with me for a long time!

Hopefully she is ok, we moved house. Could it bbe related?

OP posts:
RedwingS · 14/07/2012 22:10

I don't think it would be due to moving house. You can always see another vet if you aren't happy with the advice from your regular vet. You've had her a long time and it must be hard to see her unwell.

There have been several threads recently about how you know if it is time or not. You might find it useful to read those. I'm not saying it is - only you and your vet can know that - but it might help to see how other people have decided. Take care, and I hope she perks up soon.

Elephantscantdothemoonwalk · 15/07/2012 22:08

Im taking her to the vets in the morning. Will update with hopwfully good news
