pup doesnt want to wee out side!

AnotherLoad · 05/07/2012 14:48

The back door is always open, puppy is fine taking herself out to poo - she gets lots of praise and treated. has had the occasional poo inside which i just cleaned but made no fuss of it.

with the weeing i put her out side every 20mins sometimes 30 if im busy (washing or something!) if she does a wee i praise her.... then 10 mins later she would squat infront of me! i pick her up take her out side.

I can put her out, tell her to wee - wait..... nothing. she will come in and squat!!! she hasnt got a specific place as i dont use paper so not to confuse her. she just squats any where and every where, alot! :(

as soon as she wakes i put her out and she will wee but just doesnt go out herself (or most times i put her out) although she does with the poo?!

during night she sleeps in kitchen (small kitchen) dont use crate, put puppy pad down. in the morning she will have done a poo on pad but again the wee is every where but the pad??

any ideas or tips appreciated. am i missing something? thanks

Can't help I'm afraid I'm in a similar position, so am marking my place (excuse the pun).

multipoodles · 05/07/2012 15:02

I'm a big softy, I always go outside with puppies so I can reward immediately wee is done, even taking a golf umbrella out in the rain. I find sending them out on their own means they are less motivated to wee but more inclined to poke around, dig, chase leaves, you name it but wee.. Weather like this it's essential they get it done, keeping dry and come in ASAP or they get cold and miserable and their mind is distracted from the task in hand :(

I never use pads, only encourages toileting in the house, when we have a new pup at home we take turns, one of us goes to bed late, say 12.30 so that is last wee of the night, the other one gets up early, usually 6am so the night is short and rarely do we come down to an accident. We extend the night as pup gets older.

Use a word for wee, each time you take her out, as she wee's say the word and reward immediately, this speeds up toilet training and soon you'll be able to open back door and say the wee word, she'll rush out to do it and back in for the treat! Honestly it does work :)

AnotherLoad · 05/07/2012 15:43

ive gone out too, ive said ''go wee wee's'' and treated straight after. I put her out about 11:30pm then she usually starts whining around 6am.

she doesnt wee on the pad any way - just poo. she does wee in the kitchen during night. I would get up during the night but need some sleep to function for 23mth DD.
i take her out first thing, but nothing. then she will squat and wee in the kitchen while im sorting her food.

its the putting her out and waiting for/with her to do her wee then to do it 2mins after she comes in thats doing my patience in. im up and down every 20mins making sure she has chance to go out side but its not happening! :(

She hasn't got a clue why she is being taken outside. Dogs don't just guess. It takes time and dedication to teach them what to do, and it is hard work.

The pad in the kitchen is confusing for her - it is teaching her it is OK to toilet in the house. I'd get rid of it.

Leaving the back door open is also counter productive. It's not actually teaching her anything. She needs to be taken outside, and you need to wait and wait until something happens. House training takes weeks and weeks to get perfect - but it does eventually happen.

If her wees are very frequent indeed, take her to the vet to check for a UTI.

AnotherLoad · 05/07/2012 16:17

I know ive only had her a week and its going to take longer than this, but i dont understand why she will willing poo out side but not wee?

I read on here to take them out often to show them where they need to pee. your not wrong- its hard! and tiring. even the youngest dont wear me out half as much :)

right so pad out the kitchen. she's not using it any way....

the door is left open so toddler can go out, plus it gets quite stuffy in here in this weather. i do go out with her, not every time tho tbh.

yes her wee do seem frequent. it may just be as she's my first 'own' dog and it just seems alot.

OP posts:
CharlieMaroc · 05/07/2012 16:36

It is tiring (and tiresome) having to go out every half hour or so with her to pee, but I promise it really is worth it...my pup would do anything for a treat so after she sussed that she immediately got a treat when she 'tiddled' I swore at first she was deliberately peeing just a bit so she could then go again and get a second treat!

For Tara it was the immediacy of getting a treat that made it click.

AnotherLoad · 05/07/2012 17:38

charlie can i ask what treat you are giving? I know its not all down to the treat im just curious as to what others use for treats.

I sat out there earlie with her, she done a poo. gave her a treat, then went back out a little bit after and sat with her. she kept running inside!!! there was a calling her out, running back in game. then i had to go in to get dinner sorted. 2mins later.... wee in the living room :(

i know it takes time, im not demanding she learns it in a day - im just a little tired, and a little confused that she does a number 2 without taking me with her lol Grin

was only wondering if i was doing it right so thought id ask

I took our pup outsdie and waited with him. I would say 'go wees' and 'be quick'. Once he has done a wee, I would go mad with praise clapping my hands and making a big fuss, so he knows he has done well.

Sometimes I think he just squats and nothing comes out if he doesn't need to go. He just goes through the motions to keep me happy!

She may not link wee and poo together as 'toilet activities'. I know it's dull but you need to teach her wees are also done outside :)

groovejet · 05/07/2012 18:07

Flynn did this, stood outside with him ,for what felt like ages, with no joy, back inside a wee would follow.

What do you do when you catch her doing a wee inside?

With Flynn it was take him out on a regular basis and stay with him, kept a very close eye on him inside and the moment I saw any signals scoop him up and take him outside. After doing this. I managed to scoop him up and he actually finished his business outside so lots of praise and from then on it did start clicking with him. Once it clicked it didn't take long for him to become very reliable.

CharlieMaroc · 05/07/2012 18:09

I'm in Morocco so I probably get different treats to you... I get soft tripe sticks which I cut into tiny little discs.

I only had the pup, no kids, so it was much easier for me, but honestly the time you put in during the first couple of weeks will be so worth it. Start noticing when she needs a pee and then you can anticipate when to take her outside. With Tara I knew I had three minutes to get her outside when she first woke from each nap, and after food I had about five minutes. Other than that, I just took her out at half hourly intervals. It honestly only took two or three weeks of that to get her to go to pee on demand. We still had accidents of course, but soon clean, and having the door open (I do all the time) means she'll start going out on her own before you know it.

The main thing I did wrong when Tara was a tiny pup was not getting her into a routine so I had what I thought was an energetic little manic puppy but then I realised she wasn't sleeping enough, so I started putting her outside (she has a kennel in the garden) for regular naps....it makes toilet training much easier when if she is only awake for an hour or two at a time.

AnotherLoad · 05/07/2012 19:00

when i catch her squating i scoop her up and take her out side, no words, i dont tell her off, just take her out side and say go wee's.

only 10mins ago i went out armed with treats, closed the door so she cant run back in. repeated wee wee's. she done it and i was like WOO HOO good girl BIG fuss, LOTS of praise.... came back in sat on the sofa. not kidding - she squated near the edge of sofa!!! Shock only a dribble came out but still?!!

she does this alot, the dribble. like spotting or something??

im on her like a hawk, my 23mth old is abit squeeze happy so i have to be. if she run out towards the kitchen i go see whats she is getting up to. same as the passage. obviously when im cooking or washing i cant be 2 places but try my best to keep eye on her.

she doesnt give me any signals. just squats where ever she is. some times its a big wee others its just a pea size drop.

im so busy with house work, entertaining toddler and every 20/30mins taking dog out its hard to make a routine other then the 20mins thing. although she will still wee inside even shortly after going outside.

it will all be worth it i know... .... breath!!! and :)

OP posts:
CharlieMaroc · 05/07/2012 19:18

Perhaps your pup is one who wee's twice in quick succession, so try staying out there a bit longer.

Does she have somewhere to shut her in to go to sleep and give you a break? At first my dog was only awake half an hour or an hour tops and then she slept for three hours.

AnotherLoad · 05/07/2012 19:37

will give staying out there longer a go. is tricky when toddler runs in because i have to keep eye on her too! its been like bringing a new baby home. my girl is jealous of the attention im giving to the dog and tells me to put her in her bad so she can have a hug. im exhausted! :(

she does sleep alot, i could shut her in kitchen to sleep/ break as thats where she stays at night. dont want to confuse her tho. no where else down stairs has a door other then kitchen. upstairs bathroom could use? i worry if i shut her away she may think she has been bad? too new to all this.

the mistake i made was getting a dog at the same time im potty training my toddler! gota have eyes EVERYWHERE! Shock

CharlieMaroc · 05/07/2012 19:59

Well, I admire you, I didn't realise how much work a puppy would be!

My pup was much better to handle once I'd established a routine which I wish I had known to do from week one. I would recommend you learn from my mistakes and get her used to being shut in the kitchen for regular quiet sleeps, which would give you a bit of time with your toddler. I'm assuming the pup is 8/10 weeks or so? They should sleep for around 18/20 hours a day at that age, which would help you manage the other 4/6 hours :)

CharlieMaroc · 05/07/2012 20:01

I should point out I am no experienced dog owner, but the owner of a six month pup who is just starting to display some manners....

AnotherLoad · 05/07/2012 20:08

thanks charlie, i knew that it would be a challenge when thinking of getting a puppy, but i seriously didnt think it could be any harder then bringing up kids! how wrong was i :)

I will try the kitchen see if it helps. willow is 9wks old.

i might just write down when she sleeps just to check she's getting enough or not too much, cant remember off hand with so much going on.

AnotherLoad · 05/07/2012 20:29

thats ok, we all have to start some where to gain experience! just posted to get any tips/ advice and double check i wasnt missing the trick :)

Another - I think a trip to the vet is in order. She is weeing A LOT from your description - that and the teeny dribbles make me think she needs checking for a UTI.

In order to make the most of your appointment, take a urine sample with you; they're not hard to collect - find something shallow and small enough to fit between her back legs - and then when she squats, slip it underneath her. Take her back inside and then go back out to collect the tray. Picking it up straight away with dog and child nearby is a certain route to being doused in dog wee! Decant into a sterilised jam jar or similar.

Also a quick log - maybe a few hours worth - of how many wees - big small whatever, and the timings of them would help make it clear. IME, vets are very quick to fob off and equally quick to get 2 or 3 consultations out of you, when actually, going fully equipped to deal with your problem would possibly get it dealt with in one visit.

Oh - and there's no harm in saying 'no' to her if you catch her mid wee and can scoop. The instruction has to be absolutely, directly linked to the action in dogs, and immediately done with. Then you can do lashings of praise when the wee is finished outside.

AnotherLoad · 06/07/2012 12:43

she is having her 2nd jab and chip done next week so will keep a log of her wee and try and catch some, she is so quick and random. theres no sign.

when she wakes up is probably the best time because i know she needs a wee as soon as she gets up :)

took her upstairs while i got dressed earlier (she'd not long done a wee, living room!) she was sniffing around. then just squated!! but i just knew she would, probably in every room she walked in if i wasnt behind her!

will keep a pen & pad close by cos i can see me having to jot it down every 10mins!

AnotherLoad · 06/07/2012 15:02

today i have gone out with her every time, in the rain with me brolly (and toddler!) shut door, waited. she's only done one and was out side for what felt like ages. she was just sitting at the door crying to go in.

so.... i've just put her out as she was sniffing around, i realised it usually means a poo. sat out there for nearly 15mins before she done her number 2! picked it up staright away because DD was with me - coming back from the kitchen into living room.... willow squating!!!!!!! arggghhh

I have a soggy dog, soggy child and pee in living room. :(

i know i know....will just take patience lol and a lot of deep breathes :)

BlondeWithFreckles · 06/07/2012 15:07

We are in the same position. Our pup will wee on the paper in the house, poo in the kitchen and not do anything outside. We take her for walks and she comes back and immediately goes to the paper to wee. Then into the kitchen to poo.

It is 103 degrees out here at the moment and getting hotter, so we can't leave the backdoor open nor can we keep taking her out during the day, as it is too hot for her.

We shall be reading this thread with interest.

AnotherLoad · 07/07/2012 11:18

right so .... update.

have restricted willow to the living room as thats where i am most of the time, this has stopped her from wondering into the kitchen or passage to have a wee. now i can keep her right in front of me where i can scoop her up if she goes to squat.

another thing i changed was to open the back door stand out side, then call her out - treat her for comig, because thats a command i want her to learn any way. then wait a while for her to wee. if she doesnt i just walk back in and sit down.

so far i have tried it 3 times and 2 out of 3 she has come - and wee'd! then i treat and praise like mad :) so now i dont pick her up and take her (unless she's squating)

she refuses to go out if the floor is wet so have had to put a pad back down infront of the back door. to my surprise she actually walked over and used it when the back door was shut earlier. i know its not great to use pads/paper but its closer to the door and not just randomly every where. thats good enough for now! :)

Am so pleased you are getting some results AnotherLoad, it won't happen overnight but good planning with restricting the access so you don't have to chase around.

It certainly helps 'thinking outside the box' with a pup, for example, mine used to nip my fingers like crazy when I put her harness on....after many many days I made her sit, gave her a biscuit and put the harness on while she is munching.....happy me and her!

Keep us advised. I don't know what to suggest to BlondeWithFreckles, unless you make one corner of the house with paper, and do all the things suggested above with taking her to that corner every time she wakes, eats and every 20 minutes she is awake in between times, and treat immediately when she pees or poos.

CharlieMaroc · 07/07/2012 14:32

BTW AnotherLoad, when she starts connecting her actions with the treats and starts rushing back to you for them...great time to teach her to sit too. :)

AnotherLoad · 07/07/2012 22:58

ive cracked the sitting already :) she's great at that.

just working on ''NO'' and ''GOOD girl'' hoping she will prefer the belly rubs and treats and want more Grin

when i came back from shopping she ran to the back door from the kitchen and done a wee out side! Great!! then it started raining again so she done a poo on the pad too. a further few more wee's on the pad. i made a fuss but only gave her a treat some of the time so she doesnt get to reliant on the treats and its more from respect.

....later this evening she has wee'd every time off the pad Confused
she was still confined in the living room so not sure whats changed there, but slow progress is better then no progress?!!
