so the pointies have their own cushion, could we have rabbit hole or something?

So what sort of terrier you got, whats their best and worst points. any training tips?
I'll start, I have Cherry a 2 year old border terrier, she is my world. Best she is so gentle and lovely with the kids and the best lap warmer ever.
Worst points she is dog aggressive, I have been working on this for at least a year and sometimes she gets better but she is very unpredicatbale, especially with puppies.
My training tip would be always have really good treats, cherry will do nothing unless she gets paid for it, she isnt a spaniel you know.
Right your turn.

A JRT here.

She is as soft as a brush inside a bit of a lap dog, loves playing with her toys.

But as soon as we go outside she is a terrier! She was getting a bit aggressive towards other dogs but we've recently been able to change that. A treat and a "good girl" the minute we see another dog has meant within about 2 weeks she is now all waggy tailed on meeting another dog. It is lovely to see.

Am now going to start doing this for the poor postmanBlush

My last fox-terrier died at Easter. I am really missing him, and missing a terrier presence in the house. Mulling over maybe getting a puppy....

suburbandream · 04/07/2012 17:52

Sorry for your loss helly Sad We have a gorgeous Welsh terrier, he's 6 months old and brilliant fun. Zero recall however, he's just so easily distracted! He's also very bouncy which we are working on, he's so enthusiastic and friendly he just tries to jump up at everyone he meets. DS2 used to be terribly scared of dogs so I'm very aware that not everyone will want to be his friend Smile.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 04/07/2012 17:55

I have a 2 year old BT called Sprout.

He has a lovely temperament with humans and other animals. Loves to dig and roll and shake things. He does agility and loves the jumps and tunnels but doesn't quite get the see saw yet Grin

I love the way that his ears jiggle when he runs. And when he snuggles down the bed Shock

RubyFakeNails · 04/07/2012 18:09

So sorry Helly Thanks we love love love our Errol our fox terrier, he's the more docile of our two dogs and so so affectionate. He warms even my cold heart. Quite clever as well, when I went through a phase of always eating just after Eastenders, he'd dash into the kitchen the minute the music played, so he self-trained which I was quite impressed by.

As I said we're currently considering a Border honestly its a definite yes , interesting to hear about the house training as that is a concern I had.

We're all trying to come up with names for the new pup. Clive, Clarence, Frank, Otis and Sam are our current contenders although DD2 is pushing for Jesamyn Hmm

Taken · 04/07/2012 18:24

Ruby - hopefully you will hit it lucky and 'Clive' will just follow your other dogs.
Like all your names choices tbh

pinkbeachchick · 04/07/2012 21:31

Good to have a place for the terriers! We have a 2.5yr old Airedale, he is fantastic fun; still bounces round like a puppy, wants to greet every person he sees, has very selective recall especially when another dog or small creature is around...but he's so handsome he gets away with it all. Has to be the most arrogant dog I ever met. He is terrified of BTs, my parents have one, she told him who was in charge the first time they met and he hides behind me whenever he sees a BT now.

Tiddlymum · 04/07/2012 21:48

Have to say my Bt is a bit hit and miss with the toilet training but seems to do it for revenge, if he gets told off or feels like he has missed out on something!!! He is one at end of August. He has just randomly ripped up the pillow in his bed as well- just finished clearing it up :(

Still love both of em though :)

Great thread!! We have a JRT, a lovely little boy named Spud by DS! He is a rescue dog, we've had him for just over a year. He has zero recall, but on the few occasions he has managed to get out of the door, he has gone to the same place and has mostly come to us/let us pick him up when we have bribed him with the sight of his harness and lead and walkies Grin silly dog doesn't seem understand that he is already out for walkies by himself! We have a massive garden which he has the run of, but he has to stay on a long line when we walk him or we'd probably never see him again Sad

He is quite timid still, but getting so much better than when we first got him and he wouldn't come out from under the table. He is still terrified of the camera for some reason, so pictures of him are difficult....I try to get him used to it by taking pictures of him digging, when his terrier instincts are stronger than his fear.

He won't sit for treats, but will jump up for them on command!! He didn't know how to get dry after a rainy walk/bath and would sit look confused and sad, so we've had to teach him.....he can now dry his beard and face and his paws....just needs to master rolling his back on a towel!

We've just come out of the 'chew everything' phase...unless he finds a pen and then he just can't resist crunching it up!

He sleeps mostly in a chair in DS's room at night, but will happily go into any of the kids beds for a cuddle at bedtime!

Spud is a very clever boy - he knows when 'daddy' is coming home, despite DH working different shifts each week...he knows how to get a treat (sit by the dog food drawer and look cute) he sits by the door to be let out....he knows humans putting shoes on means we are going out, but he seems to know to sit in his bed when I am taking DS to speech therapy every thursday as he obviously can't come. I swear he somehow knows days/times and what happens at certain times Shock

My mum's JRT (Podge) is Spud's best friend....Podge is older, probably 8/9 so not so energetic and has separation anxiety towards my mum, but they love each other and play fight all over the place and then sleep in one bed together top to tail, like a Yin and Yang symbol). They both miss each other terribly when they are apart....luckily we are all about to move in together, so they will be in their element :)

I will try and put a picture of Spud on my profile...he is so handsome!

ditavonteesed · 05/07/2012 07:18

spud is gorgeous.

Helly :( so sorry.
Cherry is making me feel very guilty about not getting out for a proper run so I might try and drive to the woods today, she is following me round making big eyes at me, I was laid on the sofa last night and she kept coming up eye level so I couldnt see the tv and just staring at me. She has been depressed in the past so better make sure she gets a good squirrel chasing run. (she really was, she had tablets and everything, could only happen to my dog).
I love terriers, only a terrier would chase a van or a train, another dog might chase them but a terrier actually thinks they would beat them in a fight.
In the park yesterday eric was playing with 2 jack russels, one is a bt feisty, eric tried to chase its ball, becasue he chases every ball every where ever, and he got proper told off, didnt bother the dog again, could do with a few more incidents to teach him some manners, he is a bit of a teenager at the moment and no dog ever tells him off becasue I think cherry gives off some serious thats my brtoher and Ill have you signals.

Helly very sorry about your loss. Thanks Sad

tiddly I think sometimes Bobs seem to wee when he's annoyed he can't join in dinner and has to stay in kitchen.

I've put pics up on my profile if you want a looksy.

hellymelly · 05/07/2012 13:49

It is very strange without him in the house. He had such a beautiful face. (pic of him on my profile, "Helping" dig a sandcastle. I feel a bit too raw to get another dog yet, and I am mulling over a crossbreed this time as both foxies I had did have itchy skin problems. Also crossbreeds do live longer and have less health issues. I love fox terriers though, and I am yearning for a wirey little face about the place! Nice hearing about all your lovely terriers here.

EverybodyKnows · 05/07/2012 14:04

Helly he is handsome - Looks a lovely character !

hellymelly · 05/07/2012 16:34

He was lovely, his ears are back in that picture for some reason, so he looks slightly different, but he was happy to be on the beach.

hellymelly · 05/07/2012 16:38

everbodyknows your dog is lovely- He is so shiney that he looks polished!

Tiddlymum · 05/07/2012 22:25

Helly :( what a lovely dog!!! Xxxx

RubyFakeNails · 05/07/2012 23:00

Aww Helly he is lovely and looks very much like my Errol! And also Everybodyknows, your dog is so so cute but I btw I really like your tiles Grin

EverybodyKnows · 06/07/2012 09:16

Thanks, He is very soft and silky. Raw diet making him so healthy.

Ruby, those tiles are lovely but a pain to clean, also you have to seal them every year as they are natural italian slate. Thanks !

hellymelly · 06/07/2012 11:57

ruby- I'd love to see a pic of your Errol, which breeder did he come from? (maybe he is related to one of mine).

RubyFakeNails · 06/07/2012 12:17

We got him from a rescue centre. He had been abandoned at just over a year old,he had been found running around a busy road Sad. They think he was possibly an elderly persons dog who had then died or had been accidentally stolen or escaped/got lost as he seemed in good condition and relatively healthy.

Also he seemed very depressed and as if he was pining for someone, so they think he may have been loved by an owner. He has always had a bit of separation anxiety e.g. when we come back from holiday he won't leave be alone and needs constant attention and cuddles to feel secure again.

I'll have to try and sort a picture, I've never put one on mn so I'll try and work out how to do it.

hellymelly · 06/07/2012 14:10

Fox terriers are hard to rescue as they are very much one man dogs. They get devoted to someone and are prone to pining and sadness if they aren't with their owner. Both mine were like this even though they were otherwise different temperments. I have mulled over calling fox-terrier rescue and I may do that, but we may get a puppy .
