I imagine some people haven't replied due to the saying 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all'....

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 10/06/2012 08:18

What did I say in my op that wasn't nice Confused

OP posts:
Chubfuddler · 10/06/2012 08:21

Nuggets it's only ok to get a dog (according to doghouse mentality) if it's a rescue Staffordshire bull terrier. Take no notice.

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 10/06/2012 09:39

Or a greyhound.......I think I'll leave this place then. I thought I'd just share my excitement. Now I remeber why I left the doghouse in the first place HmmSad

OP posts:
NuggetsForTeaAgain · 10/06/2012 09:40

and just to clarify, I'm not actually breeding dogs myself, I just heard from the breeder.

Sneaks in to shake Pom poms. Scarpers!

yesbutnobut · 10/06/2012 09:58

What breed is it Nuggets?

RedwingWinter · 10/06/2012 17:24

I wasn't sure how to interpret the OP, but since you've explained, it sounds like you have a good breeder and have been on waiting list for a while? Good luck :) You must be so excited.

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 10/06/2012 18:26

yes indeed I have redwing - I have waited nearly a year for this moment to arrive after careful research (some on here), planning, getting timing right etc,. making sure I am definitely up for the challenge and lifestyle change etc. researching breeders and so on. Then waiting for chosen breeders/s to come up trumps first so to speak!

If anyone seriously thinks that any mere mortal would dare come to the Doghouse and blithely announce that they are getting a puppy from any old bitch that happens to have fallen pregnant they must be clinically insane or have a desire to be cyber stoned to death! Yes it is very exciting, she has yet to be mated but we are keeping fingers crossed. It will be a Golden Retriever yesbutnobut.

I stoppped ccming on here as I was following the traumas of Solo2 and she was scaring me to death as I want the same breed.

Caninemidwife · 10/06/2012 18:32

well I am too afraid to come on here and mention that my bitch had 4 lovely fat healthy puppies last night. Much too afraid for that.

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 10/06/2012 18:35

woo hoo!!!!! how exciting caninmidwife. What variety Grin. I may use this thread to encourage doghouse scaredycats to come and say hi Grin

Congratulations, Caninemidwife!

Ignore the grumps; there are plenty of cheerful, enthusiastic, dog-loving people here too Grin.

Golden retrievers are the best (biased) Smile. Good luck!

BehindLockNumberNine · 10/06/2012 18:52

Just remember, for every puppy bought, a decent puppy / dog in a rescue centre (no, not all are staffies) gets put to sleep...
There are simply not enough homes to go around Sad

KalSkirata · 10/06/2012 18:57

while a new puppy is exciting I agree with BehindLock. Too many dogs killed daily cos no-one wants them Sad

BehindLockNumberNine · 10/06/2012 19:01

It is exciting, and I do understand you are excited and don't want to take that away from you.
But next time, check rescues. A greyhound rescue dear to my heart currently has its second litter of lurcher puppies. The first lot were last summer, they were whippet / collie / saluki crosses and beautiful. The current ones are looking whippet / labrador like. Again, beautiful. Don't always assume a breeder is the only place to get a puppy...

bochead · 10/06/2012 20:06

It's worth remembering that rescues aren't perfect and that every day perfectly nice would be dog owners get rejected by rescues, so go off and get themselves a pup! Some rescues (not all by a long shot) have such a snotty, superior patronising attitude that they actively deter people from taking a rescue.

I would never take in a Battersea dog, (their attitude stinks). Many Tears is another one that has me in knots ethically - if you rehome from there aren't you inadvertently supporting a business that helps to perpetuate puppy farming?

There are murky shades of grey around some areas of rescue that I think people pretend just don't exist. I am now on my 2nd rescue dog and have never had a dog from a pup or via a breeder, but that's my choice & I don't ram it down the throat of others.

I've had a belly full of the holier than thou types. It's like being constantly in the company of fundy religeous zealots, and the older you get the less patience you have with it.

My next dog will be a pup from a breeder in a couple of years time. Part of my reasoning is so that I can avoid the rescue fanatics.

It's OK to have a much wanted, much loved pup and to keep it till it dies in it's sleep having lived a contented life as a valued companion with just one owner. In fact from a dog's perspective that is probably the ideal life scenario.

McKayz · 10/06/2012 20:10

Oooooh!!

I will be excited for you!! I remember the email from the breeder we used to say that Mum was in season. It was like TTC and the 2 week wait.

We now have a gorgeous 18 month old Golden Retriever. He can be a pain in the bum at times but then he looks at me with his lovely eyes.

Fingers crossed it all goes well for you.

BehindLockNumberNine · 10/06/2012 20:15

bochead, I agree. We were put off by both Battersea and the RSPCA many years ago and ended up buying a pup. Sadly it suffered from a now known to be genetic weakness and died before it reached the age of five.
I now love and support two very small scale rescues, both of whom have a lovely caring attitude and both of whom will consider any family regardless of age of children, garden size etc. Certainly no snobbery there, only a heartfelt welcome and a can-do attitude.
Sadly it is not until people have entered the doggie world that they become aware of these types of rescues (as indeed I was clueless many years ago)

Which is why I am excited for the op. It is a lovely, exciting time. And perhaps next time, when she knows many people with dogs (inevitable once you begin to walk your dog) she may be told of a lovely small rescue (or may even actively seek one out) and consider a rescue dog.

I myself can't preach, as I said, my first dog was a bought puppy. Seven years down the line though I will now always go rescue. Smile

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/06/2012 20:18

We got our first dog from a breeder - it was the first time I had ever had a dog and though dh had had dogs as a teenager, we decided that rhe predictability of a pedigree puppy (lab) was best for us.

2 years or so down the line, when we decided that one dog wasn't enough (addicted? moi??), we decided to go for a rescue dog as we felt more experienced and better able to cope with a dog that might be more challenging. Tbh, I doubt we'd have gone for a rescue first off. Maybe it will be the same for the op.

OP - what sort of puppy is it?

BehindLockNumberNine · 10/06/2012 20:22

Meant to add, Golden Retriever is gorgeous!! I always wanted one of those but dh vetoed. Now I have a rescue whippety cross. About as far away from a Golden Retriever as you can get. Cute though...
