My Basset having operation to see what's causing so much pain in her gut :(

Not a doghouse regular but hoping to get some support and words of optimistic wisdom please!

My 5yo basset has visibly been in lots of pain on and off all night so at 5am I decided enough was enough and took her to the emergency vet. They've ruled out bloat and pancreatitis and I just had a call saying the X-rays revealed something feint in her intestine and she seemed very uncomfortable when the vet touched it, so they're going to operate.

She's never had any surgery before other than when she was spayed and I'm feeling very anxious.

Any positive words would be gladly received, thank you.

best of luck, I'm sure she'll be just fine xxxxxxxx

Thanks :)

Aw, VP. Poor you. Nothing sadder than a sad basset. But you did everything you possibly could by taking her to the vets - she's with the best people to help her, and they'll take enormous care of her because all the nurses will fall in love with her big tragic eyes. Fingers crossed it's something that can be sorted out easily and quickly, and she's back home soon being pampered.

xx

Ah thanks WF so glad you're here! The vet was pretty taken with her - she did the Sad Face Deluxe when she first got in there (which isn't far off from default expression as you know)

Just hoping they find something not too dramatic, whip it out zip her up and she can be back on her favourite throne by this evening...

[weeps at the very thought of the Sad Face Deluxe]

They're pretty tough nuts, bassets. If there is something in there, at least the vet's caught it soon and is dealing with it. Just make sure you have plenty of chicken in for when she comes home. And please update!

ViviPru · 17/05/2012 12:07

Don't worry I will, and thanks - I'd be going out of my mind here on my own without a sounding board!!

UPDATE!

Vet just called, she had a PINECONE stuck in her guts the dopey hound. The vet is really happy with how the surgery went and all being well we will have her home in the morning.

The joys of basset ownership. You couldn't write this stuff Wink

My basset was wincing in sympathy! Last time he was rushed to the vets and had an overnight stay, the on duty nurse ending up cuddling him all night...... nothing makes you want to cuddle more than a poorly basset! Hope she gets better soon

ViviPru · 17/05/2012 15:39

Ahh thank you mango! I suspect she'll be soliciting cuddles shamelessly.

OP posts:
wildfig · 17/05/2012 17:11

A pinecone!! There really isn't anything they won't give a go if it looks 'foody' enough. Thank goodness that it's nothing more serious - and hope her insides aren't too exfoliated. Poor houndy, that can't have been nice, passing through.

The cuddle factor is their secret weapon to world domination, coupled with the sleeping gas they emit once you're actually cuddling them. (NB not the same as the other gas they emit.) My junior basset gets such adoration from the vet nurses that he actually pushes the door open to get in there quicker when I take him.

mangomadness · 17/05/2012 17:47

Sadly mine doesn't get all of the attention that he deserves :( people want to know what his girlfriend is.... she's an Otterhound

RetiredDJ · 18/05/2012 12:52

A pinecone!! holy moly!

Glad to hear she'll be on the mend soon.

Saltire · 18/05/2012 12:54

I know you are worried about your dog, I have a dog and would be too.
but
I read your thread title three times before I realised it didn't say "My gusset is having an operation. Sorry.Blush

I am gald she is ok though

ViviPru · 18/05/2012 15:37

Things have taken a turn for the worse overnight. She started to deteriorate and the vet decided she wasn't going to recover unless they operate again to see what was going on. It seems the wound inside wasn't starting to heal and they needed to clean it out and reseal it.

They weren't sure if she'd make it through the second operation but she has and we're now waiting to see if her condition improves now.

This is horrendous Sad

pumpkinsweetie · 20/05/2012 07:28

I hope things have got better vivi, thinking of u xx

ViviPru · 21/05/2012 11:08

Oh thank you so much everyone.

I'm so, so sad to tell you that she contracted pneumonia as a result of her surgery and it became too much for her to overcome. She slipped away on Friday evening.

We are in pieces, she was only 5 and in the peak of health. We work from home and are never apart from her, taking her wherever we go to the pub, on holiday, everywhere. Every aspect of our lives is now missing such an enormous part.

All pet owners think their animal is extra special (and rightly so) but in my lifetime I've never known a dog so beguiling and who made such a remarkable impact on everyone who ever met her.

I'm not sure how we're going to move forward from this but are fortunate to have great support from understanding friends and families, and Mr. Pru and I are looking after each other carefully.

Thank you all for your concern and support.

Oh, I'm so very sorry. I've only just seen this thread. I had a dog who had a similar op, and it is very risky surgery. I don't really know what to say, other than I know how devastated you must be and hope that in time the pain will ease and the happy memories remain.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 21/05/2012 11:39

Oh Vivi So sorry for your loss x

thestringcheesemassacre · 21/05/2012 11:44

Oh Vivi, so sorry.

I didn't say in my initial post, but our dog died following surgery as well. It is such a shock.

I'm so sorry for you all, take care, have some cuddles and try to think of all the good times you had. 5 is so young. Bless you all . xx

pumpkinsweetie · 21/05/2012 12:04

Sorry for your loss vivi, Sad.
Thinking of you, how heartbreaking i know what it is like to lose a pet, they are a special member of our family.
Take care xxx
