Ours thinks its great to go up and introduce herself to other dogs who arent interested and takes their snarls and hackles up as a welcome sign Confused We have only had her a month but she legs it in search of anything more interesting than us, which must be most things given the frequency Blush. Please tell me tales of your dogs to make me feel a bit less inadequate TIA

Just wanted to say that, I have been crying with laughter at all of these 'adventures' cheered up my day no end - thanks.

Had our rescue dog for 3 months, and I reckon she's at the planning stage for a few embarassing exploits.

sunshineandbooks · 29/03/2012 13:52

Some of these are so, so funny. Grin

One of the reasons I'll never have another Rottweiler though is because of other people's perceptions of them. Sad

One of the funniest I had was when I had one of these inflatable chairs. My friend spent nearly a full 15 minutes blowing it up like balloon because we couldn't find the foot pump. Put the valve stopper in. The dog went straight up and bit it. Pop!

Beamur · 29/03/2012 14:01

Where to start...
Rolls in anything - the smellier the better
Cannot be trusted by an open front door, it's an invitation to leg it (and come back hours later exhausted and stinking to high heaven)
Ran inbetween my Mums legs and tripped her up
Gets into any car with an open door or boot
Despite walking along with DP and me, heard a car that sounded like ours, looked a bit confused and ran after it anyway
Particuarly loves small children so makes a bee line for them (given half a chance)
Once did a poo so vile on a walk that DP was actually sick picking it up

Mutt is female, but there is one dog we meet on walks that she insists on humping ??? Luckily he doesn't seem to mind.

Down at our caravan she ran straight out of our and straight into the one behind to play with their elderly Staffy. We called her straight away but had no idea where she had gone. Thankfully the other owners didn't mind.

Caught a pheasant and scared it to death (no really, no shaking, no blood, the darn thing died of fear). Not too bad but in front of the gamekeeper charged with looking after them.

Chased a squirrel that then managed to get itself firmly stuck in the links of a chain link fence. I tried to push it through but it bit me, so Muttdog tried to get it again (defending me!) and it bit her on the nose. Eventually I pushed it through the fence with my foot. Now she sits at the bottom of trees and barks at every squirrel she sees.

Finally, after learning how to climb into my mums apple tree to steal (and eat) the apples she did it when we visited MIL...to her next door neighbours tree...that was newly planted...and collapsed under her weight Blush (rushes to add, we paid for the tree).

mebythesea · 29/03/2012 21:38

Oh god too many to list...

  1. when she was a pup she did a poo in the back of the car when my dog hating mil was in the passenger seat. The humiliation Blush
  2. pissed on an anglers sanwitches. We got chased up the riverbank by him. Very angry man!
  3. Rolled in a dead seal then shook herself all over an old couple having a picknik on the beach.
  4. Climbed onto the table and ate grandad's breakfast .he was not impressed.

The list goes on...

"One of the reasons I'll never have another Rottweiler though is because of other people's perceptions of them. :( "

Really sunshine? I know what you mean about the perceptions sometimes, but it's a real shame, as they're such a fantastic breed and there's a shortage of good homes for them. I guess you must have had bad experiences to make you feel that way though :(

sunshineandbooks · 30/03/2012 14:01

Ephiny - I agree it's a real shame. I get so cross about it sometimes because they really are a beautiful breed and are actually more reliable in temperament than most. But the damage been done to them by the idiots who think that a Rottie will make them look big and hard is colossal. Not helped by hysterical reporting in newspapers that conveniently ignore all the other (more common) attacks from other breeds.

I never had too much of a problem locally as I'm a well-known dog walker, but if I went out of the area I got really fed up with the looks and parents panicked into clutching their children etc. I never realised how much that perception prevailed until I got a different, more popular breed and saw I was treated differently. Sad

Ephiny · 30/03/2012 14:37

Yes we've had people snatch their children away, cross the road to avoid us etc. It's fine with anyone who actually knows our boys, but you do get assumptions from strangers. I've never had anything other than Rotts, so can't compare how it would be with a 'nicer' breed, I suspect I'd be surprised by the difference, sadly.

One thing I get really Angry about is the newspapers/websites who use a picture of a Rottie as their default 'dangerous dogs' illustration, even when the story has nothing at all to do with the breed. Have written angry emails about this in the past, it might seem pedantic to some, but IMO it's perpetuating the stereotypes that can cost dogs their lives.

My (normally very good) staffie x was having a run on the grassed area we visit when a car pulled up at the roadside.
Cue one very muddy dog running full pelt and joining the car owner in the car. I think the poor lad only pulled up to post a letter in the nearby postbox!

YNK · 30/03/2012 14:49

........and yes the poor lad looked scared to death by the panting, tongue lolling, devil dog that had taken posession of his car!

seeker · 30/03/2012 14:52

I was sitting urn a tree in the park yesterday while ds and his friends played, and a lovely chocolate lab came bounding up. Before I had a chance to say hello, he had inhaled 4 jam doughnuts! His owner was mortified!

WineGoggles · 30/03/2012 14:58

OK, not actually on a walk, but it was out of the home?
Giving into pester power and against my better judgement, I took my new rescue dog (a very greedy Rottweiler) round to a friend?s house. My friend and I had been so engrossed in chatting that I totally forgot the dog might need a pee, and whilst we were sat on the sofa with our lunches on our laps, the dog squatted in the middle of the carpet and had a piss! That was bad enough but in the ensuing chaos my friend put her lunch down and the dog ate her trout! My friend almost peed herself laughing (she?s a doggy person and took it in her stride) but I was mortified.

"One of the reasons I'll never have another Rottweiler though is because of other people's perceptions of them"
I know what you mean, sunshine. I had to develop a thick skin when I got Rotties due to the ignorance of some people. The worst was when I was walking Rottie number 1 (who happened to be a registered visiting PAT dog) and a little girl expressed an interest in petting her. Unfortunately her arsehole of a dad said ?No, not that one, that?s a nasty dog!? His wife looked embarrassed to be with him and the poor girl missed a chance to stroke a sweet natured dog. These days I just think sod people who are that ignorant, it?s their problem not mine, and I find the hysteria has died down a lot. My dog mainly gets admiring looks now :)

GrimmaTheNome · 30/03/2012 18:24

When I see something big like a Rottie offlead those are exactly the sort of dogs that I assume are well trained and good tempered - because you wouldn't risk having a nasty large dog offlead. Its the little buggers who are more likely to have a snap at you - (a) they have more to prove (b) owners of small dogs aren't always so scrupulous about control - how badly can a chihauhau hurt someone? Non-doggy people don't always get the distinction between theoretically dangerous dogs and those that are likely to be viscious in practice.
