Just left my precious dog at the vets.

I've just left my lovely youngest dog at the vets on a drip, after he ate about an eighth of the Christmas cake that my mum had made last night.

It had been left right at the back of the work surface, behind the kettle, so he showed great initiative in stealing it Sad

The drugs given to make him vomit seemed to work well, but I left him on the drip to be better safe than sorry.

Please can I have some positive thoughts for my boy Drift. He's quite nervy and a panicker, so I hope he won't be too afraid Sad and that they let me take him home tomorrow.

Oh dear, he really wanted that cake didn't he? Hope he feels better soon.
Had no idea cake was so bad for them

bemybebe · 20/11/2011 15:03

Healing vibes from all of us here! ~~~~~~~~~
Poor Drift, hope he gets better very soon!!!!

ObviouslyOblivious · 20/11/2011 15:04

Thanks Coccyx. It's the raisins, sultanas and currants that are bad for them. They (and grapes) can cause kidney failure.

poor boy.

coccyx, it depends on what cake really. as its a xmas cake am assuming it high on dried fruits inc raisans, which are toxic to dogs.

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 20/11/2011 15:06

Really? My dog used to love a wee bit (not an eighth!!) of fruit cake... oops. Everyday's a school day isn't it.

I hope he's OK and back home soon!

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 20/11/2011 15:07

How did your Mum take the news???

coccyx · 20/11/2011 15:08

Yes of course, I knew raisins were a no no. Your mum must make a good cake if he managed to get it from behind the kettle!

bemybebe · 20/11/2011 15:10

Oh no! Raisins and grapes are very bad for dogs. Sad

There are plenty of resources on the web that list bad foods and other hazards, like cocoa mulch for the garden that can be lethal. Please have a look here if you like or search yourself!!

ObviouslyOblivious · 20/11/2011 15:12

She was surprisingly good about the state of the cake, but upset that it's led to this. It was no one's fault though, he has stolen before (but nothing major) but doesn't all the time so it's sometimes hard to keep surfaces clear when he's pretending to be an angel!
The cake is salvageable as he's eaten across it, rather than through it if that makes sense.

i have a food obsessed dog, so he cannot be in the kitchen alone. as he will steal and find anyway to do it. although he tends to raid his ttreat pots these days.

spiderlight · 20/11/2011 15:20

Oh, bless him - I hope he's home and bouncing very soon.

ObviouslyOblivious · 20/11/2011 15:22

Its a pain isn't it! The worst thing he stole before this was an entire pack of butter. It basically melted in his stomach, he puked it up on the carpet and it was sooo rank Shock You can still smell it sometimes despite many shampoos...

Thinking of him. My old girl did the same with almost a whole iced and marzipanned tier of my wedding cake 3 years ago.

She threw most of it back up and she was fine afterwards- not hungry for a couple of days, but I'm not surprised.

We were very lucky then and hope everything is fine with Drift.

hellhasnofury · 20/11/2011 15:27

Mine ate a whole cake a few years ago. Like yours, he must've been desperate for it as he had to really work out how to get it from the top of our work surface mounted dishwasher, but he lived to tell the tale. Hope your boy is OK.

gothicangel · 20/11/2011 16:53

i hope he gets well soon , xx

The vet and I had a discussion about how these events always seem to happen on a Sunday/bank holiday. Consultation fee for today is £130 Shock

Poor dog Sad

I'm anticipating being in your shoes one day, as Mouse is obsessed with food and will forget all training, reason, and anything else if he can counter surf. I've become very tidy in the kitchen, but still.

well done for getting him to vet so promptly - I wouldn't have known about dried fruit, until I read this thread. live and learn.

ObviouslyOblivious · 20/11/2011 21:03

Just spoke to the vet nurse, she said he's very bright and moving around the cage - I think this may be code for barking his head off and pinging of the walls! He's still having fluids but I'm very happy that he seems ok so far.
