I have a Vizsla (1yr) and a Cavalier (7yrs) and currently feed them whatever is on offer @ PAH Blush (but skint!)

On the JRT thread I read that Bakers is shittola - which food would you recommend I stick to in future?

Thanks in advance

Thanks :) I really need something at a good price. Our bills are astro-flippin-nomical at the moment.

Depends on how far you want to compromise.

We fork out £80 a month on dog food as we have an allergic Staffy. Arden Grange and others are out of the question because of some of the fillers they use.

James Wellbeloved Cereal free isn't bad.

Pinot · 12/11/2011 11:31

£80 a month. Shock Christ on a bike.

My cocker spaniel has this. He used to have Orijen but I dreaded buying it because of the price, he has a bit more than the recommended amount with this one otherwise he loses weight on it.

kblu · 12/11/2011 11:35

If Bakers is out I can't recommend another as that's what I use but I did try Pets at Home's equivalent once which was cheaper and it gave my dog an awful dandruff problem. As soon as I went back to Bakers it cleared up. So don't use that one Grin

PersonalClown · 12/11/2011 11:43

We give our dogs the one under Orijin, Acana. Made by the same company, just not as high in protein.

It's either that or spend a fortune in prescription food that is lower quality and vet fees to keep his skin under control.

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 12/11/2011 11:50

I give our dogs Skinners food, works out not much dearer than Bakers but much better quality. It was recommended to me by a pet shop owner - she reckoned Burns was the best (very £££) but Skinners came a close second, and is loads cheaper. Dogs like it, are in beautiful condition, and tidy poo - what more could you want Grin

I get mine from here for free delivery if you buy 2 large sacks the website is a bit rubbish to use TBH. But they have cheap Drontal etc too.

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 12/11/2011 11:53

I think I've probably been spending around £15 a month on food, for 2 dogs. One a big eater, one a dainty nibbler. and another £10 a month on bloody chews

PersonalClown · 12/11/2011 11:53

The website may be crap but their service is impeccable!! They are the ones we order from, they have their shop and warehouse up the road and I love the owners!!

Can't feed the Staffy that either. Has brewers yeast in it which makes him erupt in sore, red skin. :( Bloody awkward mutt!

YardBroom · 12/11/2011 11:55

I use Dr johns gold. fabulous, cheap and does not give any of mine the trots. About a tenner for a huge sack. All my dogs have been on it for years and it is the one food which agrees with all of them.

YardBroom · 12/11/2011 11:58

here

i bulk buy from a local supplier so get it cheaper than this.

Abra1d · 12/11/2011 11:59

My terrier gets Orijen.

catawampus · 12/11/2011 12:02

My Border Terrier likes to have Royal Canin Poodle. Hmm He's on Royal Canin Sensible atm though.

catawampus · 12/11/2011 12:04

Also our BT must have small packs because the large packs mean the food goes stale, darling.

KatharineClifton · 12/11/2011 12:40

Does anyone know if the fish based food is ok for any dog? Specifically for a 9 year old?

Piffle · 12/11/2011 15:38

I feed anglian meats raw free flow minces tripe/chicken/poultry necks/beef chunks and add my own veg, plus Acana or Taste of the Wild Kibble. Also chicken carcasses and wings..
I have 3 large breed dogs (ridgebacks) and I spend £120 pcm

Piffle · 12/11/2011 15:39

And I buy all kibble via Zooplus

batsintheroof · 12/11/2011 19:48

yes bakers is shit- it causes a lot of health problems in dogs later on in life. Jollyes guy told me they don't want to stock it but have to because of customer demand.

Barking Heads fusspot is salmon based. James Wellbeloved is also supposed to be good. If you need a cheaper brand maybe go for a sensitive type- e.g. burgess sensitive so there are no additives.

BehindLockNumberNine · 12/11/2011 19:51

What fillers are in Arden Grange? I was told by a vet that it was a good food to use? And whilst it is not eyewateringly expensive, it is not a cheapy either...

SwearyMary · 12/11/2011 19:52

I use Nature Diet, its great. I feed my 5 month old pup for £2.40 a day (80p a tray) once she goes on to adult that will come down as she will need less.

crispycake · 12/11/2011 20:33

Our staffy has James well beloved!
We get the huge bag for £40-£50 and it lasts her about 2-3 months, having 2 meals a day.

misdee · 12/11/2011 20:59

i feed one medium dog raw food. comes in around £30 a month.

misdee · 12/11/2011 21:00

actually no, its less. i just stock the whole freezer for £70 and i worked out that was 3months worth. so less than £30 a month.

wildfig · 12/11/2011 21:12

Skinners salmon/rice is very good and because it's a working dog food it's only about £26 for a 15kg bag. The lower protein level suits my fussy dogs' digestion better - their coats are lovely and shiny.
