So DH wants to go and see this Staffy...

We want a dog and DH has seen an advert for a 10 week old Staffy on Pets4Homes or some such site....it's apparently in a family who appear to have bitten off more than they can chew....both working dog needs more attention yada yada.

I am a bit nervous about getting a "Staffy" from a family we know nothing about...dog is all sorted as far as injections etc but no papers....he says he is onlly seing it...he wont come home with it and he does know a lot about dogs having always had them. BUt I stil feel a bit odd about just going to someones house and buying their rejected puppy. Is it wrong? What should he be considering?

I'm delighted that the OPs posted, not just because I can warn folk yet again of the dangers and cruelties in buying from those who advertise on Pets4Homes et al and to strangers on the net (a GOOD breeder, Mumbling, would have homes for the pups lined up BEFORE the bitch was mated and would NEVER advertise them AT ALL as there would be no need to - recommendations from their breed club would ensure that they had people queueing up for their pups).

I'm delighted too because the rescue is in Sarf Lundun, where my best pal and his partner lives, and that they currently have some Poodles for rehoming... which is just what my buddy has been waiting for, a decent rescue with suitable poodles! :) Fingers crossed all round. :)

misdee · 02/11/2011 16:52

poodles!!!

miniture, toy or standard??

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 02/11/2011 17:05

we have seen a dog on Many Tears and we're just going to fill n the form and see what they say...it's a very special dog.

Two minis and two toys, misdee. Preferably to go together or if not at least with an existing dog.

Best pal doesn't have a dog at all - his DP is allergic to fur, poor woman - so they'd have to take two. :o

Funnily enough, he wants a Standard ideally, she prefers something smaller. Do you think that TWO smaller ones is a fair compromise? :o Have sent him the link and am drumming my fingers waiting to hear from him.

DogsBestFriend · 02/11/2011 17:07

Mumbling! Tsk! You can't leave it at that! :o Come on, share which one it is... Pleeeeeaaase!

misdee · 02/11/2011 17:08

2 smaller def a compromise on a standard. just had a look and they are lovely.

when the kids have left home i will fill this place with dogs lol.

biff and chip are very sweet :)

nogoodusernamesleft · 02/11/2011 17:11

Damn you again DBF, our 10 year old staffy boy died in August and now I'm weeping over those pups! Impatiently waiting for DH to get home so I can show him... we did agree that we'd wait till early part of next year but I'm not sure I can wait that long - the house just doesn't feel right without a dog in it. Sad

DogsBestFriend · 02/11/2011 17:12

Oh bless, sorry nogoodusernamesleft. :(

Fingers crossed that the right new friend, whenever you feel is the time, be that now or later on, will help mend your hearts.

nogoodusernamesleft · 02/11/2011 17:40

Ah, you don't need to say sorry, I'm just a sucker for all these dogs that need homes! Just feel a bit like we've got a wonderful home here for another dog that needs some love, so what's the point in waiting any longer - does that make sense?! Smile

kidsrockmyworld · 02/11/2011 17:54

It wasn't an attempt to advertise dogs , First and foremost I'm not making any profit my end,we where actually stopped out in the woods by a lady that had 4 sbt's with her , she was overwhelmed by ours ( biased maybe he is a beautiful dog ) told us all the Jen about herself as a breeder ,asked if our sbt was kc,hip checked asked to see all our paper work .
We then went through our 5 generations (champion bloodlines ) then i agreed . I didn't want a fee just our sbt off spring (the breeder had 5 people awaiting the arrival of pups we were keeping one as our sbt was the sire . 7 pups arrived ).
Read mumblings post and of course it popped into my head about the pup.
I've never sired him before or unlikely to again ,to have a pup from my boy without a doubt from such a lovely looking bitch .
Please don't tar me with same brush as puppy farms and backyard breeders .

As i don't work in your area of work no i don't see the repercussions, i would more than likely feel as you .

I am a responsible person, a dog lover and far far from stupid, cruel or scum thank you.

As you rescue and re home i understand why you feel so passionate about not breeding especially sbt's its close to your heart but sadly i'm not one wanting to have a rescue dog.

DogsBestFriend · 02/11/2011 18:58

AH, fair enough... but here's the deal, Mumbling....

You have to promise to post pictures on your profile when said special pooch is firmly esconced in your sitting room.

:)

Ok dogsbestfriend you know best sweetheart .

DooinMeCleanin · 02/11/2011 19:09

In knew a Staffy breeder. Lovely man he was. He'd bring his pups around to see us when we were kids and there in started my love affair with the bull breeds.

He doesn't breed anymore. He stopped as soon as the problem became clear. As I said, lovely man.

DogsBestFriend · 02/11/2011 19:11

I know a former Labrador breeder like that fella, Dooin.

He's now the owner of a certain rescue close to my heart. Wink

DogsBestFriend · 02/11/2011 19:12

I;m not your fucking sweetheart and YES, I DO know better than you, Kids. Not one tiny doubt about it.

And I stand by what I said above about anyone who is involved in breeding Staffies.

kidsrockmyworld · 02/11/2011 19:13

Because i a post she said she couldn't make London too far, we (both sbt owners ) live an hour away from Cheshire. why would i need too advertise its not me that has them that's not how its works , bitches owners job and for the record that wasn't me pushing they don't need pushing all spoken for bar 1 .

The thing is, kids sweetheart, any decent breeder has a waiting list. All pups are sopken for and the next litter too. They also have people on reserve lists just in case there is 1 too many pups born. Any one who knows anything about breeding knows that.

The waiting list is made before the dog is bred from. Only a numpty would breed from a Staffy in this country at the moment.

I adore Staffords and very much want to see their line continued in a responsible way but I would love for breeding of them to banned in this country for at least the next five to ten years if not longer.

misdee · 02/11/2011 19:17

arent SBT's the only breed that the kennal club have asked people NOT to breed? not because they are a bad breed, but because of the crisis of overbreeding, not enough homes, rescues overrun, dogs dieing, idiots overbreeding, fuckwit owners buying them as status dogs then dumping when they find out their status dog is a soppy dog and not the mean killing machine they wanted?

go to any rescue kid and go and see the magnituide of the problem yourself!
