Sad Sorry everyone - me again! So...puppy is 9 weeks old today. He had a good day yesterday but as soon as my husband came home he weed only in the house. My husband was taking him outside and he wouldn't wee (I told him he needed to stay out longer and say "busy" to encourage the pup to go - which is what I do and he does wee). This morning he got up with the puppy and took him outside and he wouldn't wee again but just sat barking and so he brought him inside thinking he was starving and gave him breakfast. But as soon as he finished or halfway through he did a massive wee inside. I can see the problem is that my husband doesn't stay out for long enough but it seems the puppy is reluctant to wee for him and doesn't have a problem for me! (Again, I am at home all day so deal with him most of the time).

But the main thing I am a bit worried about is the night. After a few rough nights in the first few days (we have had him for 10 days) , he then slept 11-6/6:30. However, Sat night he woke at 3am (my husband got in then so clearly woke him up) and last night he woke at 5:15 ish barking his head off. He had done at least one wee in his crate, which he has never done before. He didn't bark during the night but I was up 3 times in the night with my daughter who was teething and can only think I was so shattered I didn't hear his initial barks and perhaps by the time we heard him it was too late? I just feel like it's a massive cock up (I have read from other threads that lots of pups do mess their crates a couple of times) and that I am a bad mother!

He did a poo but not a wee outside and then my husband put him back in crate where he barked for approx 30 mins. (Am starting to get concerned about the neighbours as they will definitely hear him!). He clearly didn't need the loo but wanted our attention and to get up. Anyway he eventually stopped and then woke barking at 6:30. This is confusing me as if in the day we want him to go in his crate and not bark yet in the morning we go to him when he bars surely it's mixed messages? Is the way forward to set an alarm once so I let him out around 4/5am for a wee then back in crate (when he will bark which I feel guilty about for the neighbours as he is very loud) and then another so that I go down to him at say, 6:20 before he wakes and barks? All the grown up dogs I know just wait in the morning until their owners go down (within reason) but am sure that's something that comes with age....

Sorry for the essay but just feeling a little despondent and confused! I am trying to do the best thing for him but just am not sure if it's working. Any help greatly appreciated - thanks a lot.

PS. Can he have small rawhide bones at this age?

King's I would seriously consider fencing her off somewhere, I know you have tried to explain the layout of your house but I can't visualise it at all but is there something you can do to keep puppy separate from daughter? Happymm really benefited from this I think? Everyone will get stressed if she is jumping and biting. She sees your daughter as a play thing bless her, she is more her size and at a playful level!

My puppy hasn't really jumped and bit (touching wood furiously), she can get a bit nippy with certain people though, one of my daughters friends who should know better as has her own puppy keeps rolling around the floor, grabs her, squeezes her too tight and gets down on all fours and barks so puppy goes mad with excitement and gets a bit nippy! I am constantly telling the child to stop doing it, it is driving me bonkers. Not saying your daughter is doing this kind of thing but I suspect puppy just wants to play with her.

By the way I am sure all of your puppies will get better once you can walk them and keep their energy levels in check. To be honest my puppy spends most of the day sleeping other than on her walks or garden play so she will either cuddle up with one of us on the sofa or go in her crate. If we play in the garden with her my daughter knows what to do to stop her getting jumpy and bitey - when can your pup go out? Are you having proper one to one play time/training with her? How much room have you got for play?

clam · 12/06/2011 10:33

Well! Got all geared up for the night from Hell and the contrary little so-and-so slept right through without a peep! DS got up with him at 6, so I've had the best night's sleep in 10 days.

Spamspamspam · 12/06/2011 10:41

Wow Clam brilliant news well done!

Kingsroadie · 12/06/2011 12:49

Hi Spam. So you come in the front door and it has all been opened out - ie no hallway, into a double reception room, then there is one doorway where the end of the hall would have been and another at the end of the double reception room on the other side. There are steps down at each of these openings into a kitchen diner. So quite like this (But this is not our house btw - ours is smaller and cheaper - it's just a fairly typical south west London Victorian house layout: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-19123269.html so you see there are two ways of getting into the kitchen/dinner - and one of the doorways on ours is like a double doorway)

We have made a bigger playpen area now at the side of the kitchen/diner. He isn't keen surprisingly. But ignoring will happen!

My daughter does nothing at all to wind him up - she totally ignores him and walks away as she is now scared of biting. She doesn't really even try to stroke him. Obv she sometimes bends down to pick something up and he often jumps on her then or when she walks past. She is very gentle and isn't a whirlwind child at all - it's just him being a puppy - there is nothing she could do to make herself a less attractive biting object Grin

Clam - may I congratulate you on the good sleeping - woohoo!

Summer really really loved the bone! Think will beg more from my lovely butcher :) She's been happily chewing at it most of the morning, though still found time to rip DD's sock, whilst her foot was in it Shock so nit sure what'll happen next. So hoping this biting thing calms down.

And yes, gating off the playroom/kitchen divide has helped as DC can play, draw, watch tv in peace. It's just when they're together problems occur. I always try and supervise their play, but Summer is very quick. And she does need to socialise with them and learn at some point...

Happymm · 12/06/2011 12:56

That's a nice house Kings!

Great news Clam re:sleeping.

Fingers crossed for peeing outdoors and not jumping /biting today!

Spamspamspam · 12/06/2011 13:23

Good news that Summer enjoyed the bone and it kept her amused Grin

King's back to ignoring the whining then!

Can you answer me a really stupid question reg nylabones? I bought one for puppy but I can't work out if there is a really tight plastic cover on the bone or if it supposed to feel like it does? I have tried scissors and a knife to see if there is a coating but I can't grab anything, however it just seems a bit weird the way it feels.

clam · 12/06/2011 13:33

Oh God. Nephew's dog is here for the day (as SIL out). It's tipping down with rain and the two of them have been rolling round the garden in a neck-lock for the past half hour. My kitchen looks like the Somme!

ellangirl · 12/06/2011 13:40

Oh I feel your pain! We have muddy craters all over the lawn. I do believe that puppy is leading the older dog astray Grin

Kingsroadie · 12/06/2011 13:47

Happy - I must get me to the butcher! Not our house btw - Although obv I like ours too Grin. Has her tummy been okay with all the marrow in the bone or did you scrape it out first? Was it whole? Missed your post earlier - what a great night - am jealous - our pup just doesn't seem to be able to hold his bladder long enough as he weed in crate again. We also had an accident on the sofa as husband was with our daughter and dog woke up and needed a wee clearly but husband didn't really take much notice then a few mins later called me to get him and it was too late. Idiot. Poor pup!

Yes Spam ignoring him again. Although for the first time ever he has gone into his crate (within his new fenced off area) and gone to sleep. I couldn't actually believe it! Re nylabones - I think they are meant to feel like that - which sort is it? We have a normal brown one and several other types and none had a cover on them. They feel plasticy (Um how to spell that - even a word?) rubbery?

Clam - that's a bit brave of you! Well done.

Clam the puppy will have a great time and will be exhausted and happy having a dog friend to roll around with Grin

Thanks King's re the nylabone - yes that's it plasticky! okay I will roll with it, she loves it. Good news he went in the crate by himself, he is getting there bless him, bad news about your DH and the sofa incident - I wonder if he is somehow related to mine?

Happymm you had a great night, just read you post back and 7.45!! lucky you!

The bloody rain is a pain isn't it, I keep getting the bloody brolly out and traipsing out in the garden, I don't think it's been like this since we got our pup, I have been so lucky with the weather. Many a time today I have been tempted to come back inside after 5 mins but thankfully I have held on and pup has been to the loo when she eventually realises that warm bed is not a option!

Took her for a great walk as well, just managed to find a window in the bad weather and went to the woods, she went mental over something in the undergrowth, completely bonkers smelling something or other - she ventured really far on her own but recalled immediately - good puppy Grin

Actually thinking about that Happymm regarding the training and energy burning to keep her calm, I think I read you had a very big garden, could you and your daughter start doing some recall between you? Husband and I spent quite a bit of time doing this and it has really paid off (disclaimer AT THE MOMENT) at first we just called on to the other and then got her to sit and stay and then the other would call her etc etc then we started playing hiding games, one would hide behind the shed when puppy wasn't looking. Are there places you could hide in the garden and call your puppy to you? Once you get your puppy out and about you should try and let her off lead as early as you can as she will naturally stay with you when she is young, if you can get her understanding that Here or Come or whatever means you want her back it will really help. (does that sound patronising? apologies if it does....)

clam · 12/06/2011 17:41

I too have been traipsing round the garden in the rain, trying to elicit a poo from a dog who just sits down, stares me out and then starts chewing a leaf.
Ruining my hair...

clam · 12/06/2011 21:48

NEWSFLASH: PUPPY HAS FINALLY PRODUCED A POO!!!

Whose idea was a dog anyway? Angry

Happymm · 12/06/2011 22:31

Yahoo for poo production! My hairs gone frizzy I've been out so much :o
Summer does the same as your pooch Clam, sitting and watching me. I'm trying to encourage her, but she thinks I want to play-no-poo!

Yes Spam, we have a big garden, but bloody puppy just sits and stares at me and won't go off to other family members. An knackered from running round! She is a very good retriever though so doing lots of that. Just counting down days for walkies!

Kings, the bone was a big hit. Leave in the marrow, that's her favourite bit. Has been at it all day, trying to get it out :)

Sure the dog WASN'T my idea :o

Kingsroadie · 13/06/2011 08:40

10:30 - 7 here but again a wee in the crate. In the past 5 nights he has done wees every night except 1. Think I might post a new thread in case there is something I should be doing. On the plus side, I think we only had 2 wees inside yesterday (and one was "the sofa incident" so totally not the pup's fault) which is better...

Hope everyone has had good nights!

Yes they aren't keen on the rain are they? I mean, for God's sake - they have thick shaggy coats, which is more than we have - wimps!

Where is everyone btw - do we have many country dwellers? We are in London and apparently it should be 24C later today... I'll believe that when I see it.

Second jabs tmrw then just a week more inside - woohoo!

OP posts:
Happymm · 13/06/2011 10:11

We're country dwellers! Worcestershire.

Good night, and managed only one accident yesterday-though did it right in front of me and only 10mins after doing one outside! On the plus side, she does whine to go out for a poo, and she hasn't pee'd on the sofa!

God, we have another week before second jab, so that's two weeks before walking :( Has a lot of energy, and is very difficult to use it up when you can't go for a walk, and it's raining heavily so they don't want to go outside anyway. And fed up with my frizzy hair look!
