Sad Sorry everyone - me again! So...puppy is 9 weeks old today. He had a good day yesterday but as soon as my husband came home he weed only in the house. My husband was taking him outside and he wouldn't wee (I told him he needed to stay out longer and say "busy" to encourage the pup to go - which is what I do and he does wee). This morning he got up with the puppy and took him outside and he wouldn't wee again but just sat barking and so he brought him inside thinking he was starving and gave him breakfast. But as soon as he finished or halfway through he did a massive wee inside. I can see the problem is that my husband doesn't stay out for long enough but it seems the puppy is reluctant to wee for him and doesn't have a problem for me! (Again, I am at home all day so deal with him most of the time).

But the main thing I am a bit worried about is the night. After a few rough nights in the first few days (we have had him for 10 days) , he then slept 11-6/6:30. However, Sat night he woke at 3am (my husband got in then so clearly woke him up) and last night he woke at 5:15 ish barking his head off. He had done at least one wee in his crate, which he has never done before. He didn't bark during the night but I was up 3 times in the night with my daughter who was teething and can only think I was so shattered I didn't hear his initial barks and perhaps by the time we heard him it was too late? I just feel like it's a massive cock up (I have read from other threads that lots of pups do mess their crates a couple of times) and that I am a bad mother!

He did a poo but not a wee outside and then my husband put him back in crate where he barked for approx 30 mins. (Am starting to get concerned about the neighbours as they will definitely hear him!). He clearly didn't need the loo but wanted our attention and to get up. Anyway he eventually stopped and then woke barking at 6:30. This is confusing me as if in the day we want him to go in his crate and not bark yet in the morning we go to him when he bars surely it's mixed messages? Is the way forward to set an alarm once so I let him out around 4/5am for a wee then back in crate (when he will bark which I feel guilty about for the neighbours as he is very loud) and then another so that I go down to him at say, 6:20 before he wakes and barks? All the grown up dogs I know just wait in the morning until their owners go down (within reason) but am sure that's something that comes with age....

Sorry for the essay but just feeling a little despondent and confused! I am trying to do the best thing for him but just am not sure if it's working. Any help greatly appreciated - thanks a lot.

PS. Can he have small rawhide bones at this age?

Well, well puppy people! How fab! Pat on backs all round! Minimu suggested just leaving them, and she didn't think it would become a habit of peeing in their crate. The problem us that you don't know when they pee'd-it could've been 10mins after they went in maybe.

Our girl doing well today. Thank goodness for it being warm and the patio doors being open. She's just taking herself outside now.

My current problem is that she poos anywhere she please, which can be a bit of a pain on the grass if I haven't seen her do it! How do you get them to go where you want them too? Or shall I do yet another thread for that :o

ellangirl · 10/06/2011 13:09

Think sometimes the crate can be too big for a small puppy, perhaps try blocking off a bit to make it smaller?
I've given up on making puppy poo in one place already, but i think if you took her on a lead every time and gave her a command when she does it in the right place? We just try to keep the grass short so that you can spot the poo!!

Spamspamspam · 10/06/2011 13:58

Happymm - I put a pee post up one end of the garden and allways took her up to that part when I was first training her. She kind of got it but to be honest she now only poos up there or a little bit along which I don't mind, occasionally I will find one by another behind another bush. Good thing though is that she allways takes herself to the deepest parts of the garden and doesn't poo right in the middle of the grass. Oh I remembered something else she had a thing about pooing on the grass by the back door which also had the bin in that spot. I moved bin to front garden and sprayed the whole area I didn't want her pooing with that citronella get off spray - seems to have worked.

Also don't be fooled by the taking themselves out, I got complacent too soon and had accidents in the house, I still ensure I take her out every time I get her out of her crate as well because I think she associates being out of crate and straight for a wee. My husband let her out the other day after only 30 mins in the crate and she had done a wee before she went in but she still managed to piddle (albeit tiny) on the floor and he had the back door open - gah!

To date though we have had about 12 accidents in the house in 4.5 weeks which isn't too bad I don't think.

Happymm · 10/06/2011 15:58

That's brilliant, and fully understand about the complancy thing-wish DH would :o I do take her out post crate, sleep etc. So as she kind of needs to straight away, she gets the command to do your business and does, it's just the poo thing that is hit and miss timetabling wise, as no particular pattern as yet. Or maybe I just need to be on the ball more :)

Spamspamspam · 10/06/2011 16:09

Yes I got caught out the other day! She went out for a poo, had her breakfast, her head was still in the bowl as I stepped out of the kitchen to the cloakroom, I was about a minute and came back to find a big poo in the dining room!!! I couldn't believe it but to be fair she had been out of sorts on the Sunday, ate a lot more on the monday so by the Tuesday when she did it I think she had a lot in her system.

Over the weeks I have started seeing a pattern though which helps, one poo in morning, another one about an hour after breakfast, one on walk or in garden around lunchtime and then two later on in the day, one after dinner and usually another late. It does help when I kind of know when to expect them!

Wee's apart from that one on Wednesday with my DH (bloody men Grin )and one about a week ago when she was highly excited about going out and we took far too long faffing about so she had a little one in the utility room, we have not had any accidents for a couple of weeks.

Spamspamspam · 10/06/2011 16:15

And now I wish I hadn't said that because every time I do I get caught out!!!

Happymm · 10/06/2011 16:22

Oh my life, that is a LOAD of poo!

We can't walk yet so that doesn't help, but I was really hoping to get her poo'ing at home, so although I would obviously be prepared fir any eventuality that I wouldn't necessarily to carry poo home in a bag :o

Spamspamspam · 10/06/2011 16:27

You will carry poo home in a bag believe me, as soon as they are out and smelling other dog poo's they go - even if they have just been at home! Be prepared for picking it up and also remember that you have left it in the boot of your car Blush (three day old poo in a bag in a hot car is disgusting)

Happymm · 10/06/2011 16:28

That is just too grim a thought for me to even contemplate :o

Kingsroadie · 10/06/2011 17:44

Ellan - yes it's already blocked off with a crate divider so it's not very big - not sure why he is doing it! It's only at night and I think not long before he then wakes me up to go for a poo...

We live in London so have no grass - just a patio and he has decided he has a fave place to wee/poo already - where our slate chips are next to the tableand chairs - NICE.

God Spam that's amazing re lack of accidents - we have at least 1 wee a day inside. Usually 2. He takes himself out sometimes and sometimes forgets so I still have to be vigilant and the accidents will be when I haven't been as good at watching him (Dealing with 18 month old instead). I am using an enzyme spray to get rid of any smell. Luckily no carpet downstairs and no poos (well not for ages - fingers crossed!). He is still doing 5/6 poos a day!

Am Blush to report that it's good to hear these tales. Ours has seemed to regress over the last few days. He was a bit of a star on the poo front for the first week when I was charge but since I've been back at work and DH is home alone we're rolling in poo indoors! Yet he knows the 'poo' command outside. He will often trot out of the door and head towards "his" bushes to perform, but if you miss the signals inside then....
Pees randomly all over the place. He's 10 weeks tomorrow. When might this improve?????

Kingsroadie · 10/06/2011 20:11

Bloody 3 wees today. Bloody puppy! Grin. I can't wait until I can take him for walks to burn off some excess energy - he has been barking at us and nipping a lot tonight. Am a bit fed up with him tonight tbh. And glad my husband is here this weekend to deal with him.

OP posts:
clam · 10/06/2011 20:15

We've had a lot of nipping too. But am trying to get the family to be consistent with putting him down and ignoring him when he does it to us. When I went down to him this morning he launched himself at my dressing gown and hung on by his teeth as I wandered about! He also seems to have a shoe fetish and is attacking any he can find. I keep coming across random flipflops and crocs in his bed!

clam · 10/06/2011 20:20

kingsroadie - check out my pics! Tell me it's not worth it!
DH emailed me at work today with a mock-up of a 'Puppy for Sale' sign! But that might have been because I said I loved the dog more than him. Grin

ellangirl · 10/06/2011 21:01

Cute pics clam!

2T2T · 10/06/2011 21:11

Oh Clam your puppy is the mnost gorgeous little thing ever!!!!!

smartyparts · 10/06/2011 21:18

Inspired by Clam's gorgeous pup! I have added one of our new boy cuddled up with our lovely, tolerant old girl! On my profile.

Happymm · 10/06/2011 21:30

Clam, she's gorgeous. Our crocodile lab puppy is still biting, have thread running on this exact thing. However, currently, she is asleep in her sitting room bed (so spoilt she has 3beds in different places).

We also have issues with the times when DH is surfing the net watching her and pee pee time! Though no poo accidents so far. Hope not after today, as has dug up lots of my peas and eaten them, so is a little ahem, loose :o

Kingsroadie · 10/06/2011 21:42

Sooo sweet clam! I wanted a golden/cream one but ours fitted the bill in terms of good breeder/timing etc. Ours is choc. Got a curlier coat it looks like - and is F1 too. Funny how much they vary!

Perhaps the breed is a bit nippy?! They certainly seem to have lots of energy but I suppose that is most puppies?!

Oh dear happy - good luck with the peas...

OP posts:
clam · 10/06/2011 22:03

Depends which photo you saw. The profile one is when he was only 4 weeks old, and the coat was quite smooth. He's got much more bouffant curly recently. The other pix show that a bit better.

Spamspamspam · 11/06/2011 07:53

Make that 13 accidents in the house - knew I should have kept my mouth shut!

Happymm · 11/06/2011 07:55

Morning! Have my smug face on! A 7.30 start today! A veritable lie in! :)

Happymm · 11/06/2011 07:56

Oh dear spam, we had one yesterday too, whilst DH was "watching"!

Spamspamspam · 11/06/2011 07:59

Wow!! well done. I am reasonably smug with a 7.00am start but I didn't wake her she heard me get up for loo and starting whining. Didn't get to barking hysterically though and she did go in a little earlier last night about 10.45 so yes definately smug, not so smug about the poo indoors but that was totally my fault!

Spamspamspam · 11/06/2011 08:01

I fed her too late, she declined dinner so I felt sorry for her at about 9.00 and instead of giving her a snack I gave her dinner, I did take her out twice but I was also putting kids to bed etc and must have missed it, I did think it was strange she hadn't gone - I only found it this morning...gah
