just a light-hearted thread.

i was feeling a bit poorly today but felt i had to go out to walk the dogs. i took them to the woods. i was walking through woods with the sun shining through the trees and the dogs stopping for a drink of fresh spring water and i thought 'i am so lucky to have these dogs. without them i would have stayed at home today'. seeing the joy on their faces as they run towards me made me feel so happy

what enjoyable things did you do with your dogs on this lovely spring day?

Not very much as one had to be rushed to the emergency vets today and I didn't want to leave him or take him out, so just quick walks with the other dogs nearby so I could get back if needed. (My Mum was here and home with boy-dog) We are extremely lucky though that we live about 500m from a semi private beach we can walk on.

Tomorrow we are taking two out for the afternoon to the local country park for a nice long walk, a picnic and then to watch a falconry display. Hopefully the weather will stay nice, but as we're in Ireland I'll settle for no rain whatever else we get! Grin

midori1999 · 24/04/2011 21:29

Oops, was yesterday boy-dog went to the vets. Blush

Abr1de · 24/04/2011 21:33

CLeaned up some dog sick in the car. Tried not to laugh when I discovered she'd wickedly spent the night on my father's 'special' new chair having broken into my parents' sitting room while we were staying with them. Enjoyed her 'helping' us look for Easter eggs, and quickly removing the eggs before she could get them.

herladyship · 24/04/2011 21:36

Hope you dog is doing ok midori?

Took our puppy (17 weeks) & our dog (8) to sherwood forest & they were very good & had a lovely time off lead, then laid down nicely whilst we had a picnic.

Poor dd (10) was allowed to go ahead on her bike (for first time) and managed to get mildly lost AND fall off her bike, needing assistance from a passing family and making dh & I feel like the worlds worst parents when we finally caught up with her Sad

chickchickchicken · 24/04/2011 21:45

midori - read about your dog on the staffie thread. glad he is ok. i would love to live near a beach.

herladyship - you day out sounds lovely (except for dd falling). reminds me of the time i thought it was a good idea to get ds who was about 5 and on rollerblades to hold the dog lead so that dog could pull him as my back was hurting. dog was too well behaved to pull so i made a noise to get her to run. she run and pulled ds over who slammed his head back onto the concrete path Blush

abr1de - its funny how they manage to work out which is the special chair even if all the furniture is equally as comfortable Smile

Another nice walk in the park while ds's played in the children's play area.

Got early breakfast from me as I went to 6am dawn service, a second breakfast from ds2 as he didn't see my note that I'd already fed him and then snaffled most of the bread I'd put down on the lawn for the birds. And there's a roast leg of lamb bone in the kitchen waiting for his attention tomorrow (unless anyone quickly posts to say don't do it...)

Oh, and we're going for a walk in the peak district tomorrow so he can spend some quality time sizing up the baa-lambs for dinner (he will of course be on a lead. Or possibly two!)

I took Patch to the park and met a friend and her dog. My friend had had a really bad week. Her dog had wet her bed, and the vet thinks she may have hormonal incontinence. The dogs had fun and we sat down and had a tea.

My friend had skipped going to a friends wedding because she was so worried about her dog, even though she had been looking forward to it for ages. Luckily her dog does seem fine.

For lunch we had leg of lamb, and Patch got a very meaty bone. Afterwards we walked up to a nearby fair, and much to our disappointment they had enclosed it in a security fence and were not letting dogs in. This has never happened before, and so I had to return home with Patch. The fair was not doing good business at all!

We had a lovely day, even with the funfair set back.

Had an early morning training in the park with puppy. Only me, my pup and the lovely bloke who sells coffee - bliss! Grin DS and I took pup for a short run through our local woods in the late afternoon. Wonderful to seeing her running about, big happy grin with tongue lolling out. She kept running back to us as if she was trying tell us "this is so much fun!".Tomorrow we are going for a walk in Trent Country Park, so plenty of new things to explore...

Love my little doggie! We went for a big walk in the mountains then later on a swim in the lake

chickchickchicken · 24/04/2011 22:32

wow some very lucky dogs have had great days out today. am Envy at swimming in the lake (did you mean dogs and humans?) would have loved a dip myself today

am Envy of these parks where you can buy tea and coffee. where do you live? i like the idea of sitting down with friends and drinking tea when out dog walki

i just love it when dogs are having such a good time that they run back to you as if to say thank you and run off again. my little dog likes me to hold out my hand so he can kiss it and then he happily runs off again to look for rabbits to enjoy the surroundings

@ chickchic chicken me and dh in to knee length doggie off fetching frisbee, playing around with other doggies

Carrotsandcelery · 24/04/2011 22:39

Dd, ds and I had fun teaching our dog a new trick today. They hide a treat in one of their hands (4 to choose from if they both put their hands out) and dog sniffs out where it is and then puts his paw on it. Very simple but they all had fun and dog's tail was wagging furiously.

He also helped with an Easter Egg hunt but all he wanted to hunt was his ball so no danger of him eating any chocolate.

midori I hope your dog is ok. Sad

wildfig · 24/04/2011 23:08

Took my two hounds out for a morning walk through the orchards - all apple blossom and spring air and general uplifting 'If I didn't have a dog I wouldn't see this loveliness', etc. Idyllic Easter Sunday mood slightly diminished when I realised they weren't right behind me, but were enthusiastically sniffing something about fifty yards back. Turned out to be an Easter Bunny's... head. [boak]

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 24/04/2011 23:28

Showered her because she had rolled in fox poo! Well - dh showered her and I dried her.

She has had a wonderful day - she got taken for a walk by our neighbours with their black lab this morning, and this afternoon dh collected the black lab (who is her BFF) and took them both out - and they found something stinky to roll in (this was before her shower, thankfully), and some discarded and past-their-best sandwiches, which they ate before dh could get to them. Both are labs though, so have cast iron digestions and are none the worse for the experience.

emptyshell · 25/04/2011 09:26

Main park we tend to go to is absolutely packed to the rafters lately... so took him to the rec ground that used to be mining ground - and he got to whomp through the woodland, whomp in the stream, tried to catch me an Easter Bunny who cheated and ran away... and I actually didn't see much of the dog at all - just a wagging tail running through patches of nettles for most of it.

midori1999 · 25/04/2011 09:37

Thanks everyone, my little boy seems fine this morning. He's had his normal breakfast with no problems (on tiny amounts yesterday) and I am going to try a little walk with him shortly. He was disgusted when I took the others out yesterday and not him. Smile

TroubledPrincess · 25/04/2011 10:25

Went to Bradgate park with my two. Lots of woodland, streams oh and a tea room!

AllTheYoungDoods · 25/04/2011 10:30

"And there's a roast leg of lamb bone in the kitchen waiting for his attention tomorrow (unless anyone quickly posts to say don't do it...)"

My understanding is NO COOKED BONES.

Someone else come and tell me if I'm right!

ColdHandLou · 25/04/2011 18:13

According to our doggie daycare owners, you can give a dog a lamb bone as it's good for their teeth. The thing to do is give them the bone, let them chew until it cracks, then take it away & give them some of the meat (if any left!). Not tried it myself Smile

hephaestus · 25/04/2011 18:43

Raw bones of any kind are fine, including poultry, but definitely no cooked bones!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 25/04/2011 18:49

I thought chicken bones were a total no-no, hephaestus? And that big strong bones were OK even when cooked? We gave ddog the bones from the rib roast of beef that dh and the dses did for me on Mothers' day, with no ill effects, and yesterday dh let her chew the remnants of meat off the bone from the leg of lamb - though he did take it away when she'd got all the meat off. She is a lab, though, with a cast iron digestion.

higgle · 25/04/2011 18:50

Just smiled to see him sying under the rhubarb in the garden to get some shade, stretched out and enjoying the nice weather.

hephaestus · 25/04/2011 19:12

Raw chicken bones are fine - they make up the majority of my dogs' diet and I expect the same goes for the other raw/BARF feeders on here.

The issue with cooked bones is that they become very brittle and splinter easily, even the big ones, and it's these splinters and shards which can cause damage. It's unlikely but can be totally avoided by feeding only raw bones.

I think the fear of poultry bones comes from the fact that cooked poultry bones are the worst, they splinter into nasty sharp bits and I've heard of many a dog ending up in surgery after bin-raiding to get a chicken carcass.

midori1999 · 25/04/2011 20:23

Cooked bones of any kind can splinter and cause a serious problem. There is a small risk of problems with raw bones, but minute compared to cooked bones, especially if they are meat covered bones, such as chicken wings. Dogs can (apparently) break their teeth on weight bearing bones such as beef marrow bones, but I have never had a problem with this personally.

We had a lovely day today at the country park. The girls got lots and lots of attention, which they adored and they were very keen on the birds of prey and watching the DC have a go on the climbing wall. They were also spolied with a few sausages from our picnic. Smile
