just a light-hearted thread.

i was feeling a bit poorly today but felt i had to go out to walk the dogs. i took them to the woods. i was walking through woods with the sun shining through the trees and the dogs stopping for a drink of fresh spring water and i thought 'i am so lucky to have these dogs. without them i would have stayed at home today'. seeing the joy on their faces as they run towards me made me feel so happy

what enjoyable things did you do with your dogs on this lovely spring day?

Agility agility and agility all weekend! But the best bit was taking our "foster" collie who has been mega reactive to dogs and managed to walk him around the exercise area at the competition and he was wagging his tail and no lunging Yay biggest Grin ever.

WoodRose · 25/04/2011 21:27

minimu - fantastic news re your "foster" collie. I remember your earlier posts when you first took him under your wing. Wow, what a turnaround! Grin

By the way, do you have any agility friends who may be looking for another dog? I was looking at the Many Tears site this evening, despite DH vetoing a 3rd dog, and they are looking to rehome a 3 year old Kelpie named Zan. He seems to be a bit of an agility star in the making but they can't find a home for him. Not as many people as devoted to agility as you, I suspect Grin Anyway, he has been with them/ fosterer for some time so he is by doantion only. I would take him myself if I had the time and ability to give him what he needs. Horrible to see intelligent, working dogs cooped up in kennels.Sad

chickchickchicken · 25/04/2011 21:34

minimu - do you have dogs that competed? what breed are they? my little rat jrt does agility

country park sounds lovely midori. our collie cross went for all day walk with friends today. he is now up on the bed sleeping. our two jrts went to the local stream and then slept all day. they came out with me to put chickens away a few minutes ago (collie x stayed in bed) and are sleeping again.

yuk fox poo stinks. two of mine like to roll in it and seem to have phases where they roll in it every time we go to the woods and then dont do if for a few months.

woodrose - i saw the kelpie on there a few weeks ago. very sad. he would make a fantastic active, clever dog for the right person. wish i could help him Sad

Eek, I think we've definitely done the wrong thing then! Dog had one of the cooked bones from our roast leg of lamb this morning, though is showing no signs of ill effect. Dh said he just chomped it up there and then. Had perhaps better not give him the other one then...(think he must have had the equivalent of tibia/fibula, and the femur is still wrapped up in fridge)

What is the difference between our home roast bones and the roast bones that you can buy from pet shops? I know there is a difference because I bought our mutt one about a month ago and it lasted him weeks and weeks... Why are shop bought roast bones safe?

He's a one year old lab/staffie x btw (reassured by all the references to labs having cast iron guts)

hephaestus · 25/04/2011 22:48

Shop bought roast bones are not safe either, I have no idea why they sell the bloody things.

Any decent butcher will give you a whole bag of raw bones for free. :)

purplepidjin · 25/04/2011 22:56

Not quite the same thing, but I took my house rabbit out for a flollop in the park yesterday, and he made friends with a terrier of some kind - the ones with the muttonchop moustache faces?? Bunny had a lovely time hopping around on his harness nibbling at random leaves and fag ends and getting cuddles as soon as a dog came on the horizon just in case Grin

bosch · 25/04/2011 22:57

Thanks! Have only had the mutt for a couple of months and have a lot to learn. Am a bit Hmm that shops sell roast bones if they aren't safe, shouldn't rspca get a campaign going?

Will investigate raw bone option.

chickchickchicken · 25/04/2011 23:07

purple - that sounds lovely. i used to take one of my chickens for a walk as well. when new neighbour moved in he asked me if he really saw me walking my chicken and i said yes Grin

The RSPCA is a useless sack of shite, bosch, but that's another thread for another time. Grin

There's a great deal of, if not exactly immediately harmful, at least greatly misguided/mismarketed/convenience-at-the-expense-of-quality/long term detrimental products on sale out there for dogs and IMHO that includes a majority of commercial dog food.

That's probably another thread for another time too. Grin

midlandsmumof4 · 26/04/2011 01:03

Bosch.....there is no difference whatsoever....neither are safe. I actually asked if cooked bones were OK before I bought and was advised not to buy. Maybe it depends on the breed? One of these HUGE roasted bones might be OK for a small to medium dog, but not OK for our Rottweillers. Confused.

purplepidjin · 26/04/2011 07:17

chickchick it was lovely! I've taken him a couple of times now and dog owners think it's great. I choose a spot and time when it's quiet, and keep a very wary eye out for dogs. Not because I think the dogs are vicious, just because I realise that you can't train a dog to ignore a rabbit!

He came to Elemental VW show with us (only had him a few days and didn't trust him and the cat alone together, not were we prepared to leave him locked in his crate for that long) and he was a huge hit with all the kids Grin all in the name of socialisation Wink

chickchickchicken · 26/04/2011 08:05

purple - he sounds lovely. a friend leaves her jrt and rabbit at home together in her sitting room when she goes out. i could never do that with my youngest dog i'm afraid as he cannot be trusted around small furries

yes we only took hen when it was quiet and when there were two of us in case we needed to ward off a dog. our dogs used to them but dont suppose most dogs expect to bump into a chicken on their daily walk Wink

chickchickchicken · 26/04/2011 08:07

purple - do you still take him on days out? that sounds so lovely and i can just imagine how popular you were with the kids Grin

OP posts:
purplepidjin · 26/04/2011 09:00

We've only had him 3 weeks which is why we didn't want to leave them - that was a saturday and we got him the previous tuesday. We'll be taking him again but not to drag racing because it's too noisy!

He met dniece and nephew yesterday and was following 3yo nephew around and having races up and down the stairs! I want him well socialised because my other now deceased cat was in the process of registering with pets as therapy. So if bunny is suited I'll register him and bring him to work with me Smile

chickchickchicken · 26/04/2011 13:10

i'm about to get my collie x assessed for pets as therapy. thats a great idea to get a rabbit registered. what sort of work do you do? (if you dont mind me asking)

minimu1 · 26/04/2011 13:18

Sorry to be late answering yes I do compete and there are loads of us!

Many of the agility folk resuce dogs so I am sure they will see the kelpie and he will not hang around long at Many Tears.

I compete with collies, a lab and a staffy

BLimey I couldn't trust my lot with a rabbit but great to have one registered as a PAT rabbit. My lab is a PAT dog and goes regularly to a children's hospice. I have to drag him home as he loves it.

doggydaft · 26/04/2011 13:20

I went to the beach yesterday and saw the most wonderful sight....

There must have been 15 dogs, all different shapes and sizes, running in and out of the water and all playing happily together. No aggression, no fighting-it was wonderful.

Met some lovely humans too Wink

matekiddleton · 26/04/2011 13:37

This is a great thread! I had an unusually good walk today. Bus (well-behaved; sat on floor), quick shop, walk back through bluebell woods. Puppy off lead and .

purplepidjin · 26/04/2011 13:50

I work with adults with physical and learning disabilities. I don't yet know if they'll accept a rabbit but work has a huge garden so he could go in a run and meet people individuially. We can't have work pets because the staff don't look after them properly Angry but animals do make the home a proper home which is what we're after!

He's not even 3 months old yet so its a plan for when he's older. Mango would have been perfect. He was Crookshanks at my local bookshops party for the launch of harry potter 7 Blush

chickchickchicken · 26/04/2011 20:21

purple - similar work to what i used to do then. it would be great if you could take him to work with you in the future. will tell ds about mango being crookshanks

minimu - i do hope agility people see the kelpie. he is lovely. i resisted for ages looking at the website but i gave in and ended up crying a friend told me many tears are running an agility comp this friday or so he thought but wasnt sure of details. i am trying to steel myself to open website and quickly look to see if they have an event on and not look into any doggie eyes. how often do you take lab to the hospice? do you have a set day and time every week?

doggydaft - i love seeing dogs running freely on the beach. we go on holiday to the beach every year so we can take our dogs. they love it and so do i

chickchickchicken · 26/04/2011 20:23

matekiddleton - one of my dogs likes going on the bus too. bluebell walk sounds lovely. how old is pup?

OP posts:
minimu1 · 26/04/2011 20:43

I just checked agilitnet site and the kelpie has been put on their rescue pages so all agility bods can see it - hopefully he will find a home soon.

Yes I go on once a week to the hospice for a morning - although they can be flexible if something crops up
