Beagle being spayed and CKCS being castrated Tuesday, dreading the lampshades!

Jaynerae · 10/04/2011 18:14

title says it all really, will worry all day Tuesday until I know they came through ops ok, having them done at same time so that beagle doesn't hastle cavie, as she initiates a lot of play fighting.

Beagle has to be crated when she is not supervised by me or DH as she destroys things, so having lampshade on in crate is going to be interesting!

She's a loon so will be difficult to stop her racing around and jumping up, any one any advice on how to cope and keep her safe?

Not a clue!
We're having our Doodle done Tuesday also. Our Staffy will be going mental as he can't play.

Jaynerae · 10/04/2011 18:43

In the same boat then PC!

We had our lab spayed the other week. All stitched up inside so no stitches exposed ,we were given a collar just in case - they didn't want her to lick the wound but found we didn;t need it . We were told to walk her , not too far, but keep her on lead for 10 days and no going in water for that time .

I had to lift her in and out of the car = 10 month old lad weighing in at 27ks didn't do my back any good !, no going up and downstairs either.

Our lab recovered very quickly but I was also dreading it but seems a long distant memory Smile.

Also I found that when walking her on lead - she still wanted to play with other dogs but I just made her sit and got hold of her tight and just told the other dog walkers what was up with her - all very sympathetic and called their dogs away .

The first time she was let off the lead after 10 days she went potty !

Jaynerae · 10/04/2011 21:33

Doesn't sound so bad Avantia, I am sure CKCS will be fine as he is the boy, It's the Beagle I am most worried about as she rips, shreds, destroys anything she can, worried she will lick wound, guess I'll have to wait and see!

chickchickchicken · 10/04/2011 21:35

good luck. it will drag pass very quickly.

seems a good idea to get them done at the same time, even though it will be hard work at least they will be recovering at the same time

Avantia · 10/04/2011 21:39

It is difficult re licking the wound - sometimes she would be licking in that area but difficult to see whether she was just cleaning herself as normal - so we would distract her - also the only time she out of our sight was at night . were told however that once the collar is put on it should stay on . Really didn't want that collar experience - had it once with an old cat of ours .

She had a check up 5 days after the op to see whether wound was healing nicely ,it was and have never had to go back .

ednurse · 10/04/2011 21:41

Had my Beag spayed a few years back. She didn't have a lamp shade though from what I can remember.

If she was starting to lick more aggressively at the sutures then we'd distract her with food (always a winner with Beagles)

Jaynerae · 10/04/2011 21:58

Ednurse - too right about the food! That's how I distract her from ripping the slats off the fence panels!

Chick- yes we thought it best to get them done at same time, Beagle had first season before Cavie came to live with us, and now he has settled in it's time to get them done, don't want to risk any puppies, so off to the vets it is!

Fingers crossed Avantia that she will not lick!

Ooh, good luck! Mine is being spayed at the start of May. I hate the thought of her going through it - she'll hate being on the lead - she's not naturally calm! But I know it will be better for her in the long run.

Jaynerae and PersonalClown, keep us posted how it goes. :)

musicposy · 10/04/2011 23:51

PC, your dogs are gorgeous, btw!

kid · 11/04/2011 08:56

Good luck, hope it goes well.
I think it's a good idea to get them both done at the same time, you'll only have to go through the recovery period once with them.

Jaynerae · 11/04/2011 09:02

Will do Musicposy, and thanks Kid!

Your Beagle sounds bonkers! Grin I'm sure we got some 'broken' one. She's great, doesn't bay, can go off the lead down the field, has a couple of recall problems but does always come back eventually(!) although does tend to go through the bin....Hmm

JaxTellersOldLady · 11/04/2011 09:39

You can buy anti lick strips now and the self sticking bandages that the vets use can also be infused with the antilick thingies, not sure if that would help because its a castration but when my dogs cut themselves I use anti lick strips above3 and below wound and it stops them licking and infecting.

I have had to use the elizabethan collar before and the dog spends its day clunking itself on everything!

Jaynerae · 11/04/2011 14:22

ednurse - I am sure if my Beagle was a human she would be described as Hyperactive ( as could many dogs I expect!) She gets bored very easily - she is only 12 months so a teenager! The only way to keep her out of trouble is to provide things to chew - which usually means Bones (from pet shop), rawhide, Kong - all edible stuff - as toys don't last five minutes!

I take her training everyweek, and practice training whilst off the lead in the park twice a day. Training is coming on brilliantly and I am loving it. (so is she because of the amount of treats she gets!) She also chases after the bell and brings it back, you should see her run - she's like a Greyhound! So she gets tired out after an hour in the park and will sleep for a couple of hours, then it's off again!

She looks a very different Beagle than your average Beagle though - she is pedigree, but she is very slim and trim, long snout coat is thin, like a JRT, Beagle owners at dog training think she is Irish working stock - hence why she is so Hyper!

Jax - I got a free antilick strip from crufts and will talk to the vets about them - as I think that would be the better option - she will just go loopy with Lanpshade on - can't see her relaxing with it on - (not that she relaxes much!)

chases Ball not Bell!

Well I've got a VERY sulky Labradoodle on the sofa with me.
I don't know if he's going to forgive me!!

Jaynerae · 12/04/2011 15:06

PC - bless him - glad he's home and OK.

I just phoned and CKCS is sleepy but fine, Beagle still in theatre - they had emergency C section so she was bumped down the list, can't pick them up until 5.30 now. :(

I felt so so bad this morning - CKCS had no idea what was going on and was happy as Larry.

Beagle was visibly shaking with fear - she had an unpleasant Anal gland experience couple of months ago - and hasn't forgotten - so she was desperately trying to escape.

My poor babies - I feel so awful - but I know it's the right and only decision to make.

Glad your boy is OK, even if he is sulking!

PersonalClown · 12/04/2011 15:59

He's starting to forgive me. I'm getting kisses and cuddles now and he knows that he's getting chicken for dinner.

Bet your still pacing the floor Jaynerae.

kid · 12/04/2011 16:19

Hope your dogs are back home soon.
I don't even know them yet I'm beginning to pace the floor too!
I'm sure your doggies will forgive you eventually but you might have to buy them so extra tasty treats and pamper them a bit more than usual.

MmeSurvivedLent · 12/04/2011 16:22

I put one of DD's old bodies onto Daphne when she was spayed. Worked a treat, stopped her licking the wound.

Jaynerae · 12/04/2011 16:27

I stopped on the way home from work to buy some chicken - got it cooking and boiling some rice ready for when they get home!

t shirts and clothing etc is good way of stopping them licking, unfortunately I know Beagle would eat it! Even if she's Illl she would still rip it up!

Might be an idea for CKCS though - thanks for that MSL.

Jaynerae · 12/04/2011 18:33

Well my babies are home, it's awful, CKCS yelped as I was trying to lift him out of car, I tried to be so careful, managed to get him in his crate and he is asleep.

Can't get Beagle out of car crate, she won't move so DS and I carried crate in and left her in it. She was shaking so I have covered her in a blanket. She hasn't moved, eyes are open but she's asleep, never seen that before and is freaking me out.

DD (7) started crying and that set me off, I am desperately trying to stop tears, how sad am I! Just hope I can pull myself together before DH gets home otherwise he will be greeted by wife and daughter blubbing on him!

What am I like - softest bugger on earth!

When our lab came home from being spayed she really was unhappy and actuall felt quite cold , I left her to it and out some boiled rice and chicken by her bed which she ate .

Next morning when I got up and came downstairs in the morning she was up and wagging her tail to see me .

I think you will see a great improvement tomorrow . xx

MmeSurvivedLent · 12/04/2011 20:03

I felt terribly guilty when our dog was spayed. She was woozy and just so sore. It was the thought that she was a happy puppy when we handed her over to the vet.

She did recover well, within a day or two she was pretty much her old self, albeit not jumping up and we were very careful with her for a good while.
