Beagle being spayed and CKCS being castrated Tuesday, dreading the lampshades!

Jaynerae · 10/04/2011 18:14

title says it all really, will worry all day Tuesday until I know they came through ops ok, having them done at same time so that beagle doesn't hastle cavie, as she initiates a lot of play fighting.

Beagle has to be crated when she is not supervised by me or DH as she destroys things, so having lampshade on in crate is going to be interesting!

She's a loon so will be difficult to stop her racing around and jumping up, any one any advice on how to cope and keep her safe?

glad they are home safely. as others have said you will probably see a big improvement tomorrow

Jaynerae · 12/04/2011 21:09

I know I will, DH has said the same, and to my shame so has DD!

They have had a bit of chicken and we have settled them down for the night. Thanks every one for posting, appreciate all the comments.

So happy to hear they are home. The vet wouldn't have let them home if they weren't happy with their recovery so I'm sure all will be better in the morning.

Not sure if you know my story but my puppy never made it home after being neutered which is why I was anxious to hear your dogs were well. Never mentioned it before as you didn't need to worry unnecessarily. It is very rare for dogs to not survive the op and I still struggle to understand why me, why my pup. I am glad it is extremely rare though. Give your dogs a gentle hug from me x

Jaynerae · 12/04/2011 23:53

Kid I am so very sorry to hear about your little pup, I am in tears for you now, how tragic and how very sad. Your poor little baby, I don't know what to say apart from thank you for being so supportive and so considerate, I didn't know about your pup specifically, but I have read of a similar case in one of the dog mags and so knew it was a possibility.

It's so hard to know what is right sometimes isn't it, I lost my last bitch at only 8 yrs, from a womb infection, I didn't have her spayed and blamed myself, so this time I didn't want the same to happen.

we are always governed by what has happened to us before, but no matter what the loss of one of our dogs is always heartbreaking, isn't it, but especially a pup.

It was very thoughtful of you not to mention your pup before you knew mine were home, thank you.

Take care.

How are your dogs today? Hope they are bouncing back to good health.

Its been nearly a year since my puppy died and its still hard to beleive. We do have another dog, he is now 10 months old but I'll never, ever get him neutered just in case!

PersonalClown · 13/04/2011 14:34

How's the doggies doing this morning Jaynerae?

My Flupps is on the mend. A lot brighter and bouncier!
Whined all night for sympathy and DP caved and let him sleep upstairs with us. Not happening tonight unless he wants the sofa. I got about 3 hours kip as Flupps wanted to stay cuddled to me.

kid · 13/04/2011 18:50

Aww, personally PersonalClown, I'd get your dh to slepp on the settee and let your dog have his side of the bed!
Glad to hear your pooch is brighter today.
I do love dogs but am only allowed the one I have.

Jaynerae · 13/04/2011 22:43

Dogs are much better in themselves, eating drinking poohing weeing, so I guess they have recovered! Beagle is bored bored bored, took them on short lead walk this morning with collars off, beagle thinks her throat has been cut not her belly as she scoured pavement for food, she ate some dog pooh she found... Ewwwwww, she has never done that before.

Fed them 4 small meals instead of 2 usual ones.

Beagle's collar is huge because she is working beagle and has long snout, she's crashing into everything, noise is driving me mad, she's literally bored stupid, can't run round garden, she usually chews bones kongs etc to keep her busy, but she can't hold things in paws to chew so is going mad.

Tried taking collar off to let her have bone, but she started licking wound so had to put it back.

Don't think I can do another 9 days of this, going back Friday for check up and will ask for anti lick strips. They insisted I try collars first cos they will lick each others wound but I think CKCS will have his collar off on Friday.

DH slept in lounge, dogs where in other room, in crates to stop them jumping on settee, beagle cried at 6am, so DH got them out and brought them in lounge and looked after them till I got up.

am so pleased they are more like themselves, last night was truly awful and so upsetting.

Other people have suggested putting baby vest or something on dogs recovering from op, have you tried that?
What a nuisance our pets can be, but we love them so much we let them get away with anything. Hope the collar isn't taking chunks out of your ankles!

Jaynerae · 13/04/2011 23:22

Only trouble is kid, beagle would have a field day with clothing, she would eat it, she would think it was her birthday!

DC's ankles suffering more than mine! I have learnt to dodge!

OP posts:
kid · 13/04/2011 23:29

Oh well, she will just have to put up with the collar then!
Maybe your DC can wear wellies in the house for a while?

My puppy still nips my DC's feet in the mornings when they get up. He doesn't bite mine because he wasn't getting a reaction, but DC are great, they do a little dance for him and squeal! DD resorted to putting wellies on instead of her slippers and pup soon got bored of her not reacting.
DS decided he didn't want to put wellies on so pup still nips his feet Grin

It makes me sad to think of moby going through the op. I was all worried about how long it would take him to recover and I had even arranged for someone to be with him 24 hours a day. I never thought for one moment that he would die. I had some emails from the vet before the op about the procedure and recovery period and also some emails to explain to me what happened and what went so terribly wrong. I couldn't keep the emails though, I had to delete them as it was heart breaking.

Sorry, shouldn't keep dragging myself back to that day but its hard not to Sad

I am fine. Everything happens for a reason. I don't know why it happened but it must have been for a reason.

Jaynerae · 13/04/2011 23:35

I believe everything happens for a reason too.

Funnily enough dogs haven't been so bad with nipping children in our house - it's the bloody cat! She stalks DD, hides behind doors and top of stairs and when she sees her she pounces, DD screams Cat prances off with that winning feeling! Unfortunately DD will not stop screaming as cats claws hurt!

OP posts:
kid · 13/04/2011 23:38

your poor DD.
Maybe she needs to carry a water gun with her and get the cat back! I guarantee that the cat would think twice about clawing her then and the water really won't do any harm to the cat.
I reckon your DD would love it too lol

Joolyjoolyjoo · 13/04/2011 23:47

Glad to hear your beagly is feeling better! My beagle boy was neither up nor down with his castrate (many moons ago!), but beagly girl was a total drama queen! I knew she was being a drama queen, because she kept forgetting she was meant to be feigning mortal injury and chasing the cat! My guilt was doubled, because I did the op myself!!

If I was you, I would stick with the collar as long as you can bear it. You will have a lovely set of bruises mid-calf by the end, but your girlie sounds a prime candidate for a bit of diy stitch removal!

PS- I like the longer snout variety- both mine are longer snouted! The american related ones seem to be getting shorter and shorter!

Jaynerae · 14/04/2011 16:48

Joolyjoolyjoo - Yes I recall you are a vet, I will take your advice and stick with lampshade as obviously you know the pros and cons.

I am so excited to hear you have long snout Beagles! I haven't found anyone else who has them and wondered if breeder had conned us! Are they Irish working stock? I can't find anything on Internet about them, have been trying to find out more about her breed.

Kid - water pistol - great idea!

OP posts:
Joolyjoolyjoo · 16/04/2011 01:18

Yes my beaglies have long snouts- I actually think that that is the way they are meant to be, before the american ones came on the scene. The breed standard is that their ears should reach to the tip of their nose, so obviously ours have lovely long ears too Grin

I don't think there is an actual defined "long-snout" beagle, its just the way they seem to be being bred now. But I've seen a few of the shorter snouted guys with tear duct problems, and I've always maintained that longer snouts are more authentic!

Jaynerae · 16/04/2011 18:37

Oh, so we have a newer variety! Well I think she is a cracking specimen of a dog, she's very slim, tops of her Legs are all muscle, she's really really fast, shiny coat and looks incredibly fit and healthy, apart from the cone right now!

OP posts:
Joolyjoolyjoo · 16/04/2011 18:57

No, sorry, I put that wrong- I meant that our longer-nosed hounds were the originals- and that the shorter-nosed interlopers were a more recent thing- doh!!

I guess though it doesn't matter too much- all beagles are really just one big nose on legs, aren't they?!!

Jaynerae · 16/04/2011 23:34

Love that description joolyjoolyjoo, spot on.
