Does anyone have any links? or can tell me how they know it is bad? we dont use it so this is purely for curiosity. Also what about pedigree chum? are there any supermarket brands which are good? I know IAMS is bad and why that is.

Full of additives, cereals and other shit.

Our Staffy was on it for about a week. His behaviour and energy levels evened out and improved after taking him off it.

mollymoocow · 23/02/2011 20:31

Vet told me it was like feeding a child with ADHD skittles all day!!

Lizcat · 23/02/2011 20:33

The colourings and flavourings in Bakers have been appear to make the fits of epileptic dogs worse. The pieces are red, blue, green and yellow!!!! It has lots of filler cereal giving you lots of big poos that are hard to pick up.
Known as Bakers Tat in my surgery.

Crawling · 23/02/2011 20:38

Okay I understand what about other supermarket brands are any ok?

Oh no, i had no idea, i've been giving my dog Bakers! What should i feed her instead?

hephaestus · 23/02/2011 20:48

Shamelessly copypasted from an earlier dog thread...

"For those wondering about Bakers/Pedigree etc... they contain 4% meat. That's the minimum legal requirement. Note that it's 'meat' - no named source, just 'meat and animal derivatives' - derivatives can be anything from skin to feathers to feet.

The other 96% is therefore not meat. Dogs are supposed to eat meat. Dogs are not supposed to eat wheat, maize, beet pulp and other cereals to which many are allergic and manifest as itchy skin complaints or chronic diarrhoea. They are certainly not meant to eat added sugars which make their teeth rotten and their breath smell. I would personally never want to feed a beloved dog anything that contains a known carcinogen, either. Colours, additives (all of which have long been banned in humans for their side effects)...

At the very best, if your dog tolerates Bakers without any allergic reactions and you are very diligent with expensive vet visits for dental work, you are still going to be picking up giant soft orange poos that are five times the size of a dog fed a species-appropriate diet. grin

It's all about the marketing. Also, I have the greatest respect for my vet but they know nothing about food besides what a company-sponsored representative has told them so they can help flog their overpriced prescription diets full of absolute cack."

There isn't a supermarket-stocked brand of dog food that isn't full of shite. In fact there's precious few dog foods sold anywhere that aren't full of shite, IMHO.

True story - no word of Hyperbole...

My DSis is a vet and someone came n her surgery asking for the posh dog food, you know, the one that sounded like the star wars character OB1Kenobe Grin

(it was Eukanuba....)

mollymoocow · 23/02/2011 20:56

Grin fantastic port

ilooklikegrotbagstoday · 23/02/2011 20:58

Thanks Crawling. Can't believe i've been feeding her crap. I didn't think to read the box. Not normally a sucker for advertising but was completely reeled in this time Blush

MitchiestInge · 23/02/2011 20:58

don't be too put off by expense of better foods like James wellbeloved or Burns or similar, dogs need much smaller portions of them and as you can usually buy in bulk (15kg sacks for example) they're probably about same price ish

Beamur · 23/02/2011 21:00

Whats wrong with IAMS? (have 2 large bags to get through due to offer in supermarket...)

LaurieFairyCake · 23/02/2011 21:02

I have never heard anything bad about bakers. My vet recommended it and he's been eating it for 7 years without a break.

Huhuuuuuuuuuge turds though.

MitchiestInge · 23/02/2011 21:02

iams cruelty

Crawling · 23/02/2011 21:02

IAMS is used in cruel experiments on animals, some are inhumane sorry.

Beamur · 23/02/2011 21:13

Thanks for the link.

hephaestus · 23/02/2011 21:21

Vets would recommend Bakers, it'll reap them a fortune in future dental treatments. Hmm

LaurieFairyCake · 23/02/2011 22:00

Really? My dogs never even had his teeth cleaned. However he now has cataracts, a couple of fatty lumps and a heart murmur.

That csj stuff looks good, I'm going to switch.

hephaestus · 23/02/2011 22:14

CSJ isn't brilliant either. Meat meal rather than actual meat, lots of maize, wheat, rice, beet pulp. Better than Bakers by a long shot though. If budget is really a concern and raw feeding not possible, I'd go for Skinners duck and rice or salmon and rice over CSJ.

baskingseals · 23/02/2011 22:18

what about the tinned stuff then?

is any of that ok?

TCOB · 23/02/2011 22:20

Sorry might be slightly off-topic: I also noticed in verrrry tiny writing on Baker's that is a Nestle product. As well as the other stuff. Chudleys from CountryWide seems to do the trick and is dirt-cheap by comparison (James Wellbeloved near to payday though Smile).

hephaestus · 23/02/2011 22:33

IMO, no. Grin

Naturediet wet food is good, I guess.
