Is it a sign of madness to apologise to the dog....

when you stand on his paw?
Even though he was so close behind you, scrounging for your dinner, that you didn't see him?

I just said sorry to the Staffy for treading on him.Confused

If it is I am mad too. I rant to my dogs too e.g "Yes I know you would like a fuss. I would like to sit down and cuddle you too, but I can't because I am mopping the floors. I am the only person in this house who knows how to use a mop you see. You will have to go and see one of the lazier members of this household. I am sure they will be happy to sit on their backside and pet you. They seem to be good at sitting down......"

The dog usually looks a bit like Hmm this. Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 09/02/2011 18:28

Certainly not! I always say sorry to my dog if I tread on him, and sometimes rub his paw/tail better. OTOH if I trip over him I'm more likely to swear.

minimu1 · 09/02/2011 18:34

Just good manners I would have thought Grin

chickchickchicken · 09/02/2011 18:48

at least your dog doesnt text his best canine friend to arrange meet ups Blush

chocoholic · 09/02/2011 19:02
Blush You mean it's not normal to chat away to the dog all day long?
EdgarAleNPie · 09/02/2011 19:06

terribly rude not to. i think they understand, or at least my dog does.

LGJ · 09/02/2011 19:09

Talking to the dog is normal, saying thank you to the cash point is not.

Not that I would do anything like that....oh no sireeeee..... Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 09/02/2011 19:11

My last dog, if trodden on, would fawn as if he was apologising - it was a bit weird, like he thought he'd been punished or something, poor mite. Luckily he was a neat chap who mostly kept out from under peoples feet, not like our current klutz!

SecretNutellaFix · 09/02/2011 19:13

We always apologise to the cats when they get stood on/ kicked/ tripped over. The dog, when she was alive, was no different.

PersonalClown · 09/02/2011 19:17

He can't be that mad at me. He's slowly nudging the laptop out the way so he can sleep on my lap as usual!

You're setting a good example to your children Grin

flowery · 09/02/2011 19:23

I always do if I accidently tread on him or something. He definitely understands.

DooinMeCleanin · 09/02/2011 19:28

Lol @ rubbing it better. That's almost as mad as DH when I had to see to Whimppet's poorly leg

Whimppet "YOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWLLLLLLLLLLLLL YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPPP OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW"

Dh "You're hurting her. You evil woman. Come here Poppy Woppy Woppy Woppy. I'll help you. I won't let that nasty lady get you anymore. Poor Poppy Woppy Woppy Woppy. What did she do to you? Nasty lady"

me: Hmm

Tortington · 09/02/2011 19:30

please say it aint so, i talk to my dog all the time.

PepperMoonchild · 09/02/2011 19:32

I talk to my dog, I say excuse me when she gets in my way Grin

whomovedmychocolate · 09/02/2011 19:33

I say thank you to the cash machine. At least your dog has a heartbeat Grin

Choufleur · 09/02/2011 19:34

We've only had our dog for 10 days and I'm loving having another body to talk to.

BendyBob · 09/02/2011 19:35

Nooo! I cuddle my cats and apologise if I tread on them. Usually it's their own fault thoughHmm

I also apologise to the dishwasher if I have to open it up and interrupt it when it's on. That's pretty mad but the thought of life without it doesn't bear thinking about so I like to keep on it's good sideBlush

Ephiny · 09/02/2011 20:16

No, I always apologise and give a cuddle if I step on his paw or something. Mine is just the same at getting under your feet when food is around!

Madsometimes · 09/02/2011 22:11

Always apologise to dog if I trip over him. Also say thank you to chickens when they lay eggs.

Scuttlebutter · 10/02/2011 00:04

Um, always talk to the dogs. Was chattering away to them the other morning when taking them to the car for their morning walk. Was hugely embarrassed when I had put them in hte car and went back to the house for my coat to realise a policeman had been standing watching me Blush.

Have lengthy conversations with them in the house during the day. And I apologise if I accidentally tread on/bump into them. DH does too.

wildfig · 10/02/2011 09:16

Madness is when they start to talk back to you. In their own accents. Blush

morethanyoubargainfor · 10/02/2011 09:27

oh dear apaarently i am mad! you see it is like this, one dog is irish and the other german! it would be wrong to strip them of thier heritage Wink. (even the 'german' one is in fact very english Blush)

i always chat to my lads, even share all the gossip with them, they love it Grin.

JJ17 · 17/02/2011 00:22

What about singing to the dog? Me and my 2 DSs all have our own "special" songs that we song. Our dog is very small so I always tell him what a big and strong boy he is and the other day he cocked his leg to wee for the first time (he is 5.5 months old) and DS2 said "that is because you told him how big he is now".

The dog also "apologises" and whines to me if I accidentally tread on him which makes me feel worse.

musicposy · 17/02/2011 08:51

I always apologise profusely - "Oh, I'm so sorry" and make a huge fuss of them. It's never occured to me I'm not completely, utterly normal Grin Grin

Our elder dog, (shetland sheepdog) is particularly bad at being under my feet. I think it's the sheepdog thing - he's there all day keeping me rounded up! I've put a chair on his foot more than one before whilst sat on it Sad
