Just need to ofload really and try to get things straight in my head. I havent really said an awful lot recently about him because I am in total turmoil.

his mouth is a lot better, his paw was a lot better, tonight limping again, had a look, which he really didnt want me to do, cant see anything really, but it is red inbetween the toe where he had the yukky bit. This week he has been up to the loo during the night every night.Sad

Today he has had a seriously dodgy tum and he could poo through the eye of a needle. Going to the vets tomorrow, but him immune system is low and he is getting one thing after another. EAch week it is something, and each week we are reviewing at the vets. Just when I think we are turning a corner the next day it all starts again.

He isnt the happy puppy we got, he looks like a hat stand, cant get any weight on him, no matter how much I feed him, bulked out but still bland food.

Have had a long chat with my friend who is also breeder and she understands how I feel. Have spoken to DH too and I think we really need to make a decision for my poor puppy. He is a fantastic dog, but I just feel that we cant go on like this. Mostly for his sake. He grunts and groans and sighs and it breaks my heart to see him like this.

Before when his mouth and insides were a total mess, his saving grace was that he was still happy in himself and eating, now he isnt happy and although eating and is ravenous it is due to the steroids not him.

sorry this is so long, you dont even need to reply, I just needed to write it down.

Vets tomorrow with a urine sample.

dropped his steroids again and took him for a lovely walk with his girlfriend yesterday, it was lovely to watch him play and enjoy himself.

Mouth a little red, but OK, paw still dry, so all still looking good.

Eating for England and playing like the young pup he is!

bliss, long may it last.

JaxTellersOldLady · 18/12/2010 21:07

all still well here. Antibiotics finished, steroids every other day and exercise back to normal.
His paw bled yesterday and this morning when he was out, but I have looked and it heals pretty quickly.

All dogs loving the snow. Xmas Grin

Great news!
Glad your dogs are enjoying the snow. I'm trying to get out of going out in it!

JaxTellersOldLady · 18/12/2010 21:20

I like it, the GSDs like it and the Cane likes it when she is out, but is much much happier snuggled up under a blanket in the house.

Great stuff.:)

My 2 Sheps find the snow vaguely amusing too. I'm afraid that my 10yo Lab X doesn't agree with you though. Snow is not his favourite thing.

Took Loofa to see his Vet today. She had tears in her eyes, bless her. He is now 33.7KG so another kilo gain, his mouth is much better, not 100% but no blisters and only a bit red.

She gave him a good going over and lots and lots of cuddles, all OK. His paw is a bit split on his pad where he has that weird thing inbetween his 3 and 4th toe, but nothing to worry about. We will look into that in the new year, when he can heal properly again.

Steroids dropped to 20mg every other day and we will drop them by 5mg every week or two.

This is the best Christmas present ever.

He also got lots of biscuits and strokes from the trainee vet that was there. He loved his colouring and was asking lots of questions about him, his symptoms etc as this is such an unusual case so it is a really good thing for him to see.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Way to go! Keep ot up Loofa darling!

Jax, you must be so relieved, that's great news. What a happy evening this has turned out to be. :)

VallhalaLalalalalalalalaaaaaa · 22/12/2010 22:34

Keep OT up??!! What am I like?

Keep IT up, of course!

kid · 23/12/2010 00:12

Sounds like loofa is doing great.
I bet the vet will miss seeing him after he has spent so long being examined there. Bet they will be pleased when he doesn't have to go back anymore though.

What a difference to a few weeks ago! I'm really pleased with the way things are going for loofa x

ceres · 23/12/2010 07:42

so pleased he is doing well!

our dog has allergies and chews his paws until they are raw given the chance.

if his paws are sore we use sudocrem and stick a sock over it - it's great for helping it to heal. wonder if it might help with his sore paw?

JaxTellersOldLady · 23/12/2010 09:40

thanks Ceres, I do salt water solutions for him and he has a Mikki boot too.

JaxTellersOldLady · 25/12/2010 08:59

Merry Christmas from all my dogs, cat, fish!

Had a lovely walk this morning and it was so nice to watch them bouncing around in the snowy field. Could do with a snooze now though.

well after a lovely Christmas and quietish New Year, Loofas paw has gone again. Luckily we had 'emergency' antibiotics from the Vet which he is back on. Salt bathing the foot again and minimal exercise.

The good news is his mouth is still ok.

OP posts:
kid · 06/01/2011 17:09

Glad to hear loofa's mouth is ok, shame about his foot. Hopefully it will be all better quickly without causing too much trouble.

JaxTellersOldLady · 12/01/2011 08:04

mouth still looking good, steroids reduced again and still every other day.

He goes in for an operation on his foot on Friday morning. They will sedate him, xray his foot then open up the foot inbetween the 2 toes and remove whatever is in there, flush out any infection, stitch it up, bandage and hope for the best.

Please pray it is something that has worked its way in and cant get out and not anything worse than that.

Oh and he is now 37KG which is ideal weight for him. He could be heavier but I would prefer to keep him as he is and get more muscle on him through walking exercise when his foot is better.

We are cutting back on his food but he has gone from typical shepherd not fussed to labradoresque! It is quite funny. I can still leave things out and know he wont touch them, but if it is in his bowl or the 'cupboard of love' where the treats are kept its fair game!

MmeLindt · 12/01/2011 08:05

Oh, poor old Woofa. Daphne and I will be thinking about him, and hoping that the OP goes well.

Bella32 · 12/01/2011 09:00

That's sounding really, really good Jax. All the best for his op on Friday.

lol at 'cupboard of love' Grin

Keep up the good work, Loofa x

Vallhala · 12/01/2011 09:21

What a good start to the day, reading this. As Bella says, keep up the good work Loofa, I'll be thinking of you on Friday. Loads of hugs from here. xx

JaxTellersOldLady · 12/01/2011 10:16

thanks everyone, he will be fine I am sure. Best to get it sorted now that his immune system is better. I just hope that all the fiddling about doesnt damage it again and his mouth flares up... Sure it will be fine.

Ah Bella my cupboard of love is legendary around these parts! Grin It takes any dog who comes in the house about 30 seconds before one of mine 'points' it out to them.

OP posts:
kid · 12/01/2011 16:11

Hope everything goes well on Friday.

Lucky you being able to leave things out knowing he won't eat it. Teddy will help himself to the god on your plate. Actually he would even take the food from your hand as you are about to put it in your mouth!
In my kitchen, everything is pushed right to the back of the work top!

JaxTellersOldLady · 12/01/2011 21:35

well I have been lucky with my shepherds, they have all been very good that way...

however, lolly is not the same, she is very quite nosy and gets her paws up on the work surface, so we always put things away or push them to the back of the surface.

She has learned how to open the crates that we keep the dog food in and will help herself if the lids are not clicked down properly! she has the devil in her for sure! Grin
