The new puppy is fab, 7wks, almost 8 is almost house trained ie she will go to back door or squeak to let me know she needs out - plus I watch for the signs of her needing to go.

In the car she is calm, doesnt fuss, actually she sleeps and just doesnt bother.

She eats in her crate which has a blanket over the top, she plays with toys in her crate but come bed time she is driving me insane.

The routine is out for loo, back in put in crate, door closed and she sleeps for a little while. Then starts screaming and howling usually around midnight. We have tried ignoring it, tried letting her out for toilet and last night I came down around 2, snoozed on sofa and kept putting her back in her crate with door open.

What am I doing wrong? Or am I expecting too much too soon? I dont do well on little sleep, do love her to bits, but I need advice because this morning I cant see the wood for the trees. Put her in her crate, shut the door and took the kids to school, she was quiet... until I came home and she started crying, it is like she doesnt like being alone.

As I type this she is lying on the floor at my feet fast asleep. I know my advice to others would be to try to ignore it, but I cant have her waking the DC up. Confused

had forgotten this stage...

Assumpta - as Jax says, the amount on the pack is only a guide and different foods and different pups result in different amounts of food going in and poo coming out. I've never weighed to the exact gramme - you're very dedicated!! 3 meals is correct up until 6 mths old - they need more food than their tiny stomachs can hold in fewer meals than 3.

As long as pup is not underweight (and I'm sure your vet would have told you if it was) then chill. [hgrin]

assumpta · 20/10/2010 10:21

Ok. Thanks. Will try to chill from now. Not underweight, she just commented that she was leggy, and I had also thought so. [hsmile]

BudaisintheZONE · 20/10/2010 10:36

Hi Bella! I know! I must be mad. [hgrin] She is very sweet but completely loopy.

Codie, our first dog, is so funny with her. If Tara jumps up when I am on the sofa or at the computer then Codie comes over and puts her 2 front legs around her and pulls her down and then gives her a good telling off! It is so funny to watch. She doesn't seem to learn though.

Jax - sorry for hijack! Couldn't resist a puppy thread. [hgrin]

JaxTellersOldLady · 20/10/2010 10:42

its ok Buda, puppy threads are the cutest! Beats AIBU. Wink

I favour the turning away method the same as Bella re jumping up, but EVERYONE in the house has to do the same thing. Eventually they get the message that they get no attention for jumping up. It is a PITA though.

Just gone back through calendar since she was born and I make Lola 8 weeks on Sunday! She is bloody good for her age and such a fire cracker.

She also has dozens of names, some being

Lola Ferrari, Lola Poppins, Lola Lollipos and lolly... Blush

BudaisintheZONE · 20/10/2010 10:45

Lol at names. Ours is officially Tara. Or Pickle. Or Babydog. Or Trouble. Our cleaner (who adores her) was calling her Monster on Monday as she jumped up on her with muddy paws and got her coat filthy!

JaxTellersOldLady · 20/10/2010 10:47

that should be lollipop - not lollipoo or pos.

OP posts:
BudaisintheZONE · 20/10/2010 10:48

Oh - another question please!

At the moment I feed them separately as the Pickle (Tara) wolfs her food and then would go for Codie's. Codie just steps back and lets her. So I put Tara's food outside and Codie's inside. Tara bounces up at me all the time when I am carrying her food outside. Do I just keep turning my back then too? Can't see her stopping!

Bella32 · 20/10/2010 10:54

Teach her to sit for her food, Buda. Don't put the bowl down until she has her bum on the floor and yes, turn away if she's leaping at the food. Remember, if she even snatches one bit of food from the bowl she'll be even harder to stop. My latest pup (now 18 mths) was a blighter for this but will now sit and wait, pools of drool collecting on the floor [hgrin]

BudaisintheZONE · 20/10/2010 11:23

Oh she sits for her food. Until yesterday she was sitting with bottom on floor for a nanasecond and then pouncing. Me taking the food back up has taught her to sit nicely and wait. It's the bouncing up at me from the moment I pick her bowl up, take it into the utility room, put the food and water in and walk back outside. She is like bounce bounce Tigger!

JaxTellersOldLady · 21/10/2010 09:47

OK, dont want to tempt fate here, but 2 nights in a row she has slept nicely in her crate and only gone out to toilet once, around 4ish.

I got to sleep in the same bed as DH last night! haha, he snored, almost wish I had slept on sofa. [hgrin]

Anyway, think we have it cracked now.

Took Lola to her first puppy class last night with her sister and there was another dog there that I know. Only 4 of us in that class until next week when a couple of others will join in. Have to say she was really good... not interested in treats, but was with her toy that I took.

assumpta · 21/10/2010 10:37

jax well done! Even if you jinxed it, you know that she can do it again now that she has done it twice.

I would like to inform you that we had the best sized poo I have seen in a long time, maybe ever, from Belle this morning.[hgrin]

Bella32 · 21/10/2010 11:32

Congrats all round! [hgrin]

JaxTellersOldLady · 21/10/2010 12:12

haha assumpta, and I would like to say that Lolas poo was a tad soft this morning... but as I am in the process of swapping her onto RC maxi junior I suppose it is to be expected.

I have to say, poo collecting is my least favourite job.

OP posts:
Bella32 · 21/10/2010 12:29

Maxi junior? Not maxi baby, Jax? [hhmm]

[hgrin]

JaxTellersOldLady · 21/10/2010 13:36

you know what i mean... have put the bag in the bin, but it is maxi puppy stuff. I should be an expert on bloody RC products by now!

just got some vouchers from breeder, will go and read it and tell you.

OP posts:
JaxTellersOldLady · 21/10/2010 13:47

it is baby. god I am tired!

OP posts:
Bella32 · 21/10/2010 14:29

Aw sweetie - am sorry. Was just joking [hwink]

JaxTellersOldLady · 21/10/2010 19:58

I know, but with Loo being ill I am ever so slightly paranoid. I knew you were, but I had to check!

But it does say on the maxi junior suitable from 8weeks onwards. Wink

OP posts:
Bellaween · 21/10/2010 22:34

Aw, I'm sorry, hon. Didn't mean to spook you. Yes, the junior can be fed from 2 months but I find the baby dog kibble easier to soak. And the baby dog ultra sensible is - allegedly- easier to digest.

You're doing a sterling job, sweetie. Hope you get lots of sleep tonight [hwink]

JaxTellersOldLady · 22/10/2010 12:07

I did! only up at 3.45 for a loooong wee and then back to bed.

Sadly, as she had an early proper sleep from about 8ish until 11 she didnt settle very well, but DH got up with her, fed her about 5 as she was hungry and then played with her. She has been a little naughty biter this morning... time for the water pistol/squeezy things to come out i think.

Will give her dinner a bit later this evening and see if that helps her sleep better.

OP posts:
Bellaween · 22/10/2010 12:45

Awesome! You're getting there - there's a definite trend!

GSD's are such clever things that Lola will have it cracked in no time. Well done, you guys [hwink]

JaxTellersOldLady · 23/10/2010 18:12

well last night DH got her up for a wee at 3/4 ish and she was asleep, have told him not to do that, she obviously doesnt need to go then.

She did wake me up at 5.50 for a wee, then wanted her breakfast which I made her wait for. Dont mind feeding her 6.30 7ish, but not earlier.

Bellaween · 23/10/2010 18:15

Stunning!

[hgrin]

Bellaween · 23/10/2010 18:16

p.s. dh's always much harder to train than puppies ime x

JaxTellersOldLady · 23/10/2010 19:27

yeah Bella, arent they?

My friend cant just say Lola, when she calls she always sings, "hi, how is Lola, she was a showgirl" Grin

havent had that song out my head for a week now!
