MNHQ, many of us on here are interested and/or active in dog welfare and rescue, be that as rescuers, campaigners, vets or just well informed dog owners. To call this section "The Kennel Club", after an organisation which encourages the breeding of dogs for looks rather than health - indeed which encourages breeding at all when there are hundreds of dogs being killed in pounds each week purely for want of homes - is an insult.

I usually enjoy the wit of MN's topic names but this one was ill judged.

If we must have a seperate dog topic, albeit that it's not very helpful to those of us with various species, especially those who are able to advise and help with problems relating to more than one type of pet, may we please at least have a less offensive name for the topic.

or how about Petsnet

fruitshootsandheaves · 08/09/2010 19:26

or
Take The Lead

withorwithoutyou · 08/09/2010 19:27

I second canine corner.

Agree with Valhalla but I'm sure MNHQ didn't realise it might offend .

I abhor the kennel club, they would have had my little deaf springer drowned at birth.

sethstarkaddersmum · 08/09/2010 19:27

The Doghouse

Dinghy · 08/09/2010 19:33

Oh call it Dogging and be done with it.

Or what about 'I go for walks with a carrier bag in my pocket'.

Or Lassie Come Home.

Or Cujo's Corner.

Or Doggone It.

CaptainInkheart · 08/09/2010 19:36

I think In The Doghouse (with apols to sethstarkaddersmum). Since Justine has just got a puppy, she will soon understand where that phrase came from.

Dinghy · 08/09/2010 19:36

Why not call it Justine's puppies.

"I watched that programme a few years ago about the various health problems suffered by some pure-bred dogs, and that opened my eyes to the consequences of breeding to maintain a particular look."

Gah!!! Dn't even get me started on that programme, biggest load of codswallop I have ever seen...

"I abhor the kennel club, they would have had my little deaf springer drowned at birth"

They would have done no such thing. What individual breeders do is up to them, the kennel club have no say over it really. The Kennel Club do not breed dogs, nor do they euthanase them. Hmm

The topic title doesn't bother me, a kennel is somewhere a dog lives, isn't it? I sort of agree with Valhalla's sentiments, the KC could do a lot more to encourage good breeding practices, but I do have to say I think it is going a tad far to say they encourage breeding for looks rather than health, hopefully they are working towards chaging this, they seem to be, but still have a very long way to go. The Kennel Club do not set the breed standards.

I fully support the homing of rescue dogs, but that situation doesn't suit all people who want a dog and it is not the good breeders who are the problem, it is all the back yard breeders and puppy farmers (and I admit some breeders who show and on the face of it appear decent but really don't give a toss) and the general public who buy from these places.

CaptainInkheart · 08/09/2010 19:37

Did you all know that horselovers were initially deeply - deeply - offended by The Tack Room being called Blush My Little Pony Blush? Shock

catinthehat2 · 08/09/2010 19:39

Barking Mad

Vallhala · 08/09/2010 20:18

Thank you MNHQ and thank you MN members too.

Cat, I got there first with Barking Mad... or were you referring to me?

The smelly sofa club Grin

EdgarAllInPink · 08/09/2010 20:25

Agree strongly midori

that programme was a load of crap that undoubtedly led many people to buy from puppy farmers or commercial breeders who re little better believing breeders of pedigree dogs to be the charlatans.

harmful IMO.

Also lthough i agree the KC could do much more, it is one of very few organisaions doing anything about the issues raised in that progrmme, e.g hereditry disease.

missbeehiving · 08/09/2010 20:25

I vote for a pussies galore cat section.

whomovedmychocolate · 08/09/2010 20:31

Oh my misbeehiving - you know we are going to end up with a 'rabbitkeepers corner' don't you?

missbeehiving · 08/09/2010 20:36

Chickenkeepers could be renamed Fowl Interests. What about a reptile topic - Nest of Vipers?

sethstarkaddersmum · 08/09/2010 20:39

surely the rabbit one would be 'Rabbit rabbit yack yack'.

I love Nest of Vipers but I reckon people who keep adders would get upset about the negative stereotyping.

catinthehat2 · 08/09/2010 20:54

Val - spotted it now Grin

withorwithoutyou · 08/09/2010 20:59

Oh Midori do sod off. I know the kennel club don't drown puppies for a living.

Do you have to be so earnest?

withorwithoutyou · 08/09/2010 21:03

Oops, that was bit mean.

Sorry Midori. But honestly, I'm not so thick as to think the KC actually organise euthanising of puppies so a Hmm back to you. And an apology for being rude Blush

BonzoDooDah · 08/09/2010 21:44

wet dog?

Dogsville?

Actually scrap that - I second calling it Dogging

onepieceoflollipop · 08/09/2010 21:47

Puppy Love?

thesunshinesbrightly · 08/09/2010 22:17

I was looking for pets for aaaaaages!! why change it?
Agree with Vallhala as usual.

Vallhala · 08/09/2010 22:23

Hey, what new puppy has JustineMN got? What do I have to be envious of this time? :o

OP posts:
PortBlacksand · 08/09/2010 22:27

I'm not sure about the other areas of pets that are new. Horses, chickens etc. fine with me but we definitely need a dog area on here. You could call it the 'dog walking area' or 'dogging area' Wink

I never ceased to be amazed at the anti dog feeling on here (i have three - two of which are rescue) and it would be nice to be able to have dog chats without having the interjection of the (bizarrely prolific) dog haters.
