I know, I know, another dog thread. Yawn. But all these anti dog threads are making my head hurt!

Seriously the utter nonsense that is being spouted on them by some is actually making my head hurt.

So I thought I'd start a nice thread about them showing just how amazing a well trained pooch can be....

Look.....

www.dogguide.net/25-hero-dogs.php

brainz.org/8-most-heroic-dogs-history/

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8688540.stm

dogsinthenews.com/issues/0109/articles/010915a.htm

www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13439261/

or every 'bad' dog out there, there are plenty more amazing ones.

But no doubt this thread will also be used to rant about how all dogs should be banned/muzzled/burnt alive etc. I doubt the people on these links would agree.

Shiny thank goodness for that I was too afraid to come out from behind the sofa after some of the threads at the moment.

I see daily what a difference a well trained dog can make to people.

Disabled people are gaining their independence from having dogs with them. Recently I have been involved with training dogs for 4 young solidiers who have lost limbs in Afganistan. The difference these dogs are making to their lives is huge, they can live on their own, they are back getting involved in sport etc and making a new life for themselves.

Your links are great Grin

wahey for this thread. can i also just say that dog owners are some of the most friendliest people. over the last week i have been in the waiting room sof a dentist a doctors and a vet. guess which one had me chatting the whole way through the waiting period?

Ishouldprobablywax · 04/09/2010 21:37

Totally agree booyhoo!

Bella32 · 04/09/2010 21:55

Dog haters wear Boden. People they meet recoil in horror from their psychedelic £50 shirts and this creates lasting psychological damage in the Bodenites. They vent their spleen on dogs. Fact.

Don't know if Canine Partners has been mentioned above, or Endal, but my goodness are they worth reading about Wink

mumnerves · 04/09/2010 21:58

I've got a Pets as Therapy dog and he makes the elderly people at the day centre we visit smile :o

Dogs are FAB!

fruitshootsandheaves · 04/09/2010 23:30

My dog was so mad at agility today he broke the jump Blush how many faults would he get for that in a competition?!

Fruitshoots my little nutcase dog has his first training class tomorrow, after finally having his skin condition sorted and being neutered and socialised and all the other things his previous eejits owners failed to do with him. I have decided he is ready for training with other dogs! I am started to get a bit worried about this, now.

Once he has been I will tell you of madness!

Well done Shiny - good to read, but sadly the dog haters are a lost cause....

booyhoo · 05/09/2010 12:33

shiny that is great, it souds like you have put ALOT of work in with him. hope he takes tp the agility. what breed is he?

ShinyAndNew · 05/09/2010 13:01

He is a fox terrier x with something the pound thought a JRT and the vets thinks Westie.

This is just obedience training, booy, with a view to start flyball and agility once his recall and walking on leash is sorted.

At home I have managed to get him to stop jumping up at people walking past him and socialised him enough so that he doesn't dive all over other dogs and try to hump every thing in sight.

The humping thing was a difficult one to sort. Even after neutering. I think it just became habit to him.

What Riven said. I'm sure 80% of dog owners are responsible and caring and thoughtful - it's that other 20% - the ones who believe that everyone should like dogs and make no allowances for those who are scared, the ones who don't pick up dog shit etc - who cause the problems.

bronze · 05/09/2010 13:13

Problem is thats not what comes across on those threads

I don't think it is us being over sensitive. I think it is just the general tone that eveyone that has dogs never picks up and allows their dogs to misbehave not us being oversensitive.

Personally I have 5 dogs who never poo or wee outside of our garden. (unless we go away for an overnight stay!) They have been trained to do so at home and always do. The dogs I train in my work also are trained the same way.

However I am treated the same way by the anti dog brigade as those that do not pick up poo.

I do a lot of dog sport agility, rallyo and obedience competions and nearly all of those "dog people" who compete etc are very responsible owners. We spend hours and hours a week with our dogs training them and getting a bond and for all of us to be put under the same umbrella as the average dog owner that doesnot do anything with their dog, pickup or train them is just becoming very frustrating.

Ok maybe I have spent too much time on forums then! Better get on with RLGrin

Threelittleducks · 05/09/2010 17:21

Yay for this thread!!

Dog lover, dog owner and very very proud of my boy!

My dog has a citizenship award, which is more than I can say for some of the knobbers in the street!
He'll treat you better than most people would. He'll know when I'm down and when I need comfort. He'll be excited to see me when I get home. He'll provide a nice hoovering service when ds has dropped crumbs on the floor, and was by my side for night feeds when ds was a baby (and keeps me company when I can't sleep in this pg). We've grown through my teens together and he has been there when I was single, when I got married and the tumult of 2 children.
He's an old man now, but still full of energy. And very well behaved.
(And yes I am responsible and poo-picking up)

I pity the fool who hates dogs!!
So there!!
Ha!

Threelittleducks · 05/09/2010 17:23

Just thought I would give a big cheer for my pooch. So very many nice dogs in this world. They deserve a cheer :)

Oh no Riven! That's horrible!

The first dog we ever got ended up back in the pound the weekend after we got her - my mum took her back because after being told we were getting a dog with no issues, we got a dog with a few serious issues which we had no experience nor capability to deal with. I was only 13 - we were all heartbroken. The dog is probably dead now (or extremely old) but I sincerely hope she ended up somewhere nice.

I couldn't imagine someone rehoming my dog without consent after having him as part of the family for 7 years. That must have been devastating :(

abr1de · 05/09/2010 17:33

That is so sad, Riven.

YAY FOR OUR DOGGIES!!! It's ok for them to moan about unruly dogs but I wonder how many people would moan if I started a thread about unruly children?? Hmm lots I reckon riven I wouldn't forgive my mum if she did that, not that I think she would.
