I know there are a few of us that have recently picked up new pups.
Were your puppies lovely and calm when you first got them or were they mental straight away?

I can't believe how calm Teddy is being so far. He has slept a lot but even when he is awake, he just nibbles gently on your fingers or rolls his ball with his feet.

He has not had any accidents in the house yet which is a miracle.

I am wondering if this is the calm before the storm?

good morning everyone. I have decided to change Storm's dinner time to try to stop the night pooping as it's driving me mad. I know he's only a baby and can't help it but two mornings in a row we have had to bath him as he was covered in it. Shock
On a good note he did his first poo in the garden last night! very proud Grin
Having problems getting the DC'S to leave him alone while he sleeps, he is a very light sleeper so even the slightest touch or noise wakes him. wats we are having the same problem as his breeder was feeding him bread and milk and I am weaning him off of it. Now down to half a slice of bread with each meal and taken the milk out of the equation as I thought it was the problem with the runny poos. Tomorrow going to take bread out completely and see how he goes.
Glad he doesn't beg for our food though, since he has never had any titbits he doesn't know our food is good! Wink

kid · 30/08/2010 09:49

What time was you feeding him dinner?
I feed teddy dinner between 6:30 and 7:00.
He goes out for a walk about 20 minutes after dinner and always does a poo. We are usually out for 15 minutes.

Hope changing meal times works for you.

Rory is on 4 meals a day at present. Breakfast is around 5.30am/6.00am, lunch 12.00 noon, dinner 5.00pm, supper 9.30/10.00pm. We have not had any accidents in the crate overnight (touch wood) but I am still getting up at - or before - the crack of dawn to let him out.

We are going to move to 3 meals a day when he is 12 weeks old next weekend. How do people space these out? Do you want to fix breakfast and dinner at the times you want to feed him on a 2 meal plan and then give him his lunch halfway between? Or, do you try and space out the meals more evenly over the 24 hour period?

I look forward to your replies!

pinkanimal · 30/08/2010 10:15

between 7 and 7:30. I to spread his four meals out so they aren't too close together. He can't go for walks yet as he has only had one injection and it is 2 1/2 weeks till he has his second. So about a month away from walks. I do take him out in the garden lots.

I'm not sure wats but my view is that if he is covered in poo like Storm was this morning and yesterday then he HAS to have a bath. It's one thing smelling of dog but smelling of poo is a completly differrent thing altogether!! Shock
And lol you would be concerned if he smelt like a cat, or a fish?? Grin
On the bath subject, I always thought dogs smelt awful when wet but actually Storm doesn't have a wet dog smell at all. Dunno if it's his breed?
I have come to the conclusion that like babies they poop lots! Shock
I read that they poop about half hour after eating,Hmm my opinion is it's more like two hours after!!!

He is currently playing with his string of sausages (from P@H) he loves then.

Hi, picking up Belle next Sunday, our little cockapoo. I have just read all the poo bits, and am wondering if this happens, do I wash her outside with warm water if the weather is nice and cost her up in a towel, or do I do it in our bath whatever the weather? How do you not get poo everywhere? Especially if she has stepped in it all? I want to be prepared!

kid · 30/08/2010 10:53

I always wash my dog in the bath and then clean the bath afterwards. I've had my pup for 9 days and he hasn't needed a bath

bet you are really excited about getting belle. Another one of teddys sisters names Smile

OP posts:
assumpta · 30/08/2010 11:19

Hugely excited!, but quite nervous all the same. Do you just wrap the pup up with a towel and carry her to the bath so everywhere doesn't get covered, including yourself? We never had a dog when I was growing up, and I am trying to be prepared for as much as possible . I have found this thread to be brilliant.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 30/08/2010 11:21

Good morning all, and welcome to the puppy mayhem to curlylox and cheeseandGerkinsSmile.

How are we all coping with our little nusiances bundles of joy?

Rusy is fab, all toileting outside and now asking at the door, very pleased. He is doing really well with the crate too, so glad we have cracked it.

He is walking beautifully on the lead, does a very nice retrieve to hand and has matstered sit, down, paw, high five, 'give me love' (put his head on hy kneeGrin), spin and roll over. We are currectly working on 'leave' which I am spacing over several days. I am delighted with him.

Purplefrog Rudy is on three meals a day and has them at 8am 2pm and 8pm.

wats that's quite a lot of poo production, has it got worse since you started changing the food? If so it should get better as he gets used to it. You can wash them with water as often as required, in the winter if you walk somewhere muddy, you may need to do it every day. It is shampoo you need to limit as it strips the protective oils from the coat, though tbh when your dog is covered in shit, just do what ever you need to doGrin.

pinkanimal is Storm doing firm motions that he is then walking in at night? Or does he have diarrhea? Is he still howling at night? What is he like when you leave him during the day? I am wondering if he is just very distressed.

assumpta I have only ever bathed a dog in my bath using the shower hose. However I have never yet had to wash poo off of a dog, so I will let the poopy puppy owners advise youGrin.

I have shortened the list somewhat as it was taking up a lot of room, I have also added a week on to most of the puppies where I thought appropriate, I hope I am not wildly out on any of them.

Wherethewild - thanks, I am hoping for an answer from a poo puppy. Belle is the chosen name for our cockapoo, so that can be added to your list please and she is due home this Sunday. Very excited, but nervous! Great thread!

PurpleFrog · 30/08/2010 11:51

Pah WTWTW - you and Rudy are definitely the swots of this group! Grin

You are giving the setting the rest of us a very high bar......

As to the 8.00am/2.00pm/8.00pm spacing of meals - that sounds good, but can a labrador actually exist for 12 hours without food? Wink

I'm trying not to panic but it looks like teddy just got stung by a wasp Sad
ds said a wasp was on teddys nose and then teddy started to cry. He wouldn't walk or let me touch the side of his mouth.
He wouldn't 't lay on that side and would accept any treats I offered while trying to look.
I've rung the vets but both are closed so I put some ice on his swollen lip and on his gum.

He has now let me look, there is no sign of any sting and he is now letting me touch his face. One side of his lip is harder and swollen a bit.

He has eaten some treats, had a drink and it's not swelling any more. A friend knows a vet and is just texting them for me now.

Dogs aren't meant to make you have a heart attack. I think teddy is okay but I'm still really worried. Trust it to happen on a bank holiday.

Ant advice from any? please!

OP posts:
kid · 30/08/2010 12:43

Checked him over again and the swelling is definitely going down. I've put my hands in his mouth to compare his lips and they appear almost the same size and the swollen one isn't as hard as it first was. Bloody dog, poor dd was crying as she doesn't want teddy to die

OP posts:
WhereTheWildThingsWere · 30/08/2010 12:50

kid, keep a very close eye on him for the next hour or two, but as long as the swelling continues to go down and he is fine in himself I wouldn't worry.

kid · 30/08/2010 12:54

He is asleep now which is totally normal for him as we had just been for a walk.

I'm sitting on the kitchen floor with him and trying not to cry. If I start the kids will be hysterical too. Dh is at work so I have to deal with this myself.

I do think he is okay, but what if I'm wrong?

OP posts:
WhereTheWildThingsWere · 30/08/2010 12:58

Grin @ Purplefrog, not really, he had been a real bastard problem up to now.

I think you will find that if you give him his dinner earlier then he is more likely to eliminate before bed and won't wake up so early in the morning. Also by moving his breakfast later then he won't be getting up just because he is expecting food, should be quite win win reallySmile.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 30/08/2010 13:05

Bless you kid, I think you are going to find anything you think could endanger him hard because of MobySad, I do feel for you.

You have to trust your instincts though and you will usually be right, the only real dangers with wasps stings are if they are right inside the mouth/throat and the swelling couls obstruct the airway, which isn't the case here or anaphylactic shock which would have happened very quickly. It's the same risks as people really.

kid · 30/08/2010 13:18

Thanks. It's been over an hour now (that went quick) and he seems normal.

I suppose I should feed dc now that my baby seems ok. There seems to be a lot of wasps at the front of my house but no sign of a hive. I know they sting at this time of year but I wasn't expecting teddy to get stung.

I just knew I'd be neurotic after losing moby, but I guess that's to be expected. I was just about to walk out the door to moby's old vet with teddy but decided to phone to check if they were open. That's probably the only way I'll set foot in there, in an emergency.

How long do I have to watch teddy for before I know he is definitely okay?
I need to walk with dd to her new school
today. I'll carry teddy if I need to!

OP posts:
PurpleFrog · 30/08/2010 13:19

Hmmm - it has crossed my mind that he is waking me up in the morning because he knows he will get fed soon after. He is clearly no longer absolutely, absolutely desperate to go to the toilet straight away. The last few mornings I have been deliberately waiting for a while after we come in from the garden before feeding him. I think I will just carry on as I am for this week, trying to move his breakfast back a bit each day, then when we cut down to 3 meals I will definitely move his breakfast to a later time, and last meal to an earlier one.

How much are dogs governed by an internal "body clock"? And does decreased day length have any effect on how long they sleep for at night?
