I know there are a few of us that have recently picked up new pups.
Were your puppies lovely and calm when you first got them or were they mental straight away?

I can't believe how calm Teddy is being so far. He has slept a lot but even when he is awake, he just nibbles gently on your fingers or rolls his ball with his feet.

He has not had any accidents in the house yet which is a miracle.

I am wondering if this is the calm before the storm?

WhereTheWildThingsWere Teddy has just watched the leave it video with me. I was watching it then he came over to watch with me when he heard the clicker!

I do have a clicker in the cupboard, think we will start training with that tomorrow as he really reacted to hearing it.

I have just noticed one of his eyes has a black mark on the white bit. I don't know if it was there before. Its not weeping and doesn't look sore in anyway. I wonder if it was always there? Might study some of the photos we took to see if I can see it in any of them. I'm surprised its taken me a whole week to become neurotic about him lol

oh kid that isn't sounding good for teddy's mum. i hope she recovers well enough for surgery.

if anyone is still up can you help me with this one.

just put WB to bed, took him out to the yard first to pee but he didn't he jsut went over to the parasol base and slurped the water out of it so i brought him in again and put him in crate. he has his heat pack and all but he is yelping and whining. i waited til he was quiet for a few seconds then praised the silence and took him out again for a wee but still no joy. he just went back to teh water slurping so i brought him back in and let him have a good drink of his own water and then when he finished put him back in crate. he has gone over to sleep now but is whimpering in his sleep. should i take him out again now for a wee or go up to bed and come down again in a few hours? i though the yeloing was maybe him needing to pee or wanting a drink but i have given him water and tried him for a wee with no joy. also, did i do the right thing wrt waiting til he was quiet before letting him out of crate?

kid · 28/08/2010 23:46

i think you did the right thing waiting for him to be quiet. If you had let him out for whining, he might have decided to get your attention that way in future.

I personally wouldn't leave it for a few hours to let him out again. Could you empty the water out of the parasol base? Then he wouldn't be able to drink that so he might just wee instead?
Hope he has a good nights sleep and a dry night too!

good idea, i think i will put the base away in the shed so it isn't there to tempt him. he is snoozing away now. i will wait another half an hour then take him out again. but what if he doesn't pee? i have to go to bed at some point Grin

kid · 28/08/2010 23:55

no you don't, just stay up all night listening to him snore Grin
Yeah, go to bed, if he pees, no big deal as he is still learning. I would expect him to pee soon though if he has had lots to drink.

ok, heres a question.

the pups wont drink out of their water bowls.

but will drink out of dd4's water/sand tray, the fountain, a puddle etc.

why?

booyhoo · 29/08/2010 00:00

i get that aswell misdee although he is drinking out of the water bowl when tehre is no other option.

will they not use the water bowl at all?

kid · 29/08/2010 00:01

are the bowls metal?
I know Teddy wouldn't eat food out of his metal bowl as he didn't like his reflection!

OP posts:
misdee · 29/08/2010 00:02

occasionally they will. but only if they see me running the tap. otherwise anything is a slurp fest. they even knocked the lid off the water tray to get to the sandy water. yummmy gritty water.

misdee · 29/08/2010 00:02

not metal, plastic ones.

booyhoo · 29/08/2010 00:02

oh yes kid, it is like having a newborn, listening for any variation in breathing. i almost took ds2's monitor from his room to put in the living room for WB. parents did this Shock and then this Hmm when i mentioned it. Blush

kid · 29/08/2010 09:02

lou are you up yet?!
Teddy woke me at 8am which is good, unfortunately he has an upset tummy and couldn't hold it so I had to get up and wash the floor.

I hope he gets over it quickly. Was thinking of giving him boiled rice to eat today. He keeps trying to eat everything from the garden including stones, snails, slugs, grass, weeds. I always stop him and force him to
drop whatever he has picked up.

Poor teddy!

Eddie woke in the night and started howling, but i think it was because i got up to have a wee and he heard me. I ignored it tho and he went back to sleep.

Atm boris is sitting on the.window ledge, dora is snoozing by the sofa and eddie is snuggled next to me

booyhoo · 29/08/2010 13:33

well, removing the parasol base worked and he did a wee before bed and conked straight back out again.

got up at 5 and took him out but no wee, then when i came back down at 6 he'd had an accident. maybe try half 5 tomorrow Grin

pinkanimal · 29/08/2010 13:34

kid Storm tries to do that too, I am unsure if it is ok for him to eat grass or not? Especially as he has only had one injection.

The nights are getting easier, he cries for maybe an hour and then goes to sleep and I don't even have to get up to tell him to be quiet. The only problem is the pooping in his crate, even if he gets it on the paper he treads in it and then spreads it everywhere Angry I know he can't help it but every morning I have to scrub the whole crate and shower poo off of blankets. And today we had to bath Storm as he was covered in poo Shock.

We do take him out reguarly but he hasn't managed a poo outside. Wees are becoming better, he will wee on command in the garden or go to his room to wee on paper. Not many wees on carpet anymore Smile
Took him out today to the pet shop to buy some chewing toys and anti-chew spray so we will see how that works Hmm
On a plus bonus he was very good in the bath and pet shop.

booyhoo · 29/08/2010 13:39

my mums two dogs also eat grass. WB has yet to try it as we don't have a garden, just a yard.

i once heard that it settled their tummies but i could be wrong. maybe they just like the taste.

booyhoo · 29/08/2010 13:42

oops, just googled

apparentley grass makes them sick. they eat it to bring up the bile that is in tehir stomach. bile in an empty tummy can be uncomfortable so they eat grass to bring it up.

pinkanimal · 29/08/2010 13:50

so does that mean its ok for them to eat it or not??? Confused

CheeseandGherkins · 29/08/2010 13:56

Quick hello, only just noticed this thread Blush we got our puppy that I posted about 2 weeks ago now and he's coming along lovely :) He had his first walk today with us and our other dog, Fudge, (she's a 1 year old staffie cross shar pei) and he loved it :o His name is Rolo and he's 10 weeks now. He's a lovely black Staffie cross (with lab we think) and a lovely boy.

He's getting the hang of simple commands such as sit, his name!, come, and off/drop etc. He ADORES food hehe and he loves my slippers, particularly running off with them and chewing them in his bed.

Rolo and Fudge are getting along brilliantly and play together all the time. We've had a few growls from Rolo but worked out that this is either when he's grumpy, aka tired, he's being picked up or leaded from behind ie he can't see what's happening and is scared or is playing and growls at toys. We've been dealing with that and giving lots of praise and treats.

He's good tempered and a really fast learner and good listener. He's getting the hang of the toilet training well too. Very playful and just gorgeous :o A little nippy but not as much as I expected and very gentle too, unlike Fudge when she was a puppy, took her a little longer to learn gentle mouthing.

Anyway, I'll try and get some pics uploaded later. Want to take some new ones first of them both too.

CheeseandGherkins · 29/08/2010 13:57

Oh and forgot to say, he's wonderful with the dc's, we make sure he's left alone and not tugged at etc and has plenty of time to rest in peace! He has a crate as well which makes this easier. He's a lovely, friendly little boy.

booyhoo · 29/08/2010 13:59

i reckon so aslong as there are no chemicals or weedkills etc around where they are eating it.

CheeseandGherkins · 29/08/2010 14:02

Ah cats to that with grass for the hairballs, the grass helps them throw up, assume it's the same for dogs but possibly not hairballs?

pinkanimal · 29/08/2010 14:15

ok thanks boo Smile

booyhoo · 29/08/2010 16:27

did anyone's pup develop a small swelling around the area where they had their vaccination? WB had his 48 hours ago and i have just noticed a 50p sized swelling where the injection went in. is this normal?
