Morning and welcome.

To anyone new this is the Happy Place Café, all food and drink served here is calorie free. Everyone is welcome.

There are some people who have been here for literally years and others are newer.

The staff are me, obviously, Florence a French pastry chef who is married to Fernando the cocktail waiter (no one knows where Fernando is from so we suspect the marriage was about visas).

In a previous incarnation one of the regulars was Tilly (RIP) who brought a sparkling light in to the café along with a lemur named Leo.

Leo runs a dog wash (Tilly had a golden retriever and her family agreed to the dog wash as a tribute) but as there are rarely and dogs around he will wash anything, his other interests are goats and eggs. He spends every morning cooking eggs.

Outside the café is seating and a water feature, the water feature becomes a swimming pool in summer and an ice rink in winter. There is also a petting zoo.

Other residents are the kittenbees who are kittens the size of a bee with wings, they are very gentle but like to nibble anything sweet. Please do not give them alcohol.

Outside is where their larger cousins the bumblecats live, they are about the size of a fist and a lot more feisty than the kittenbees.

There is normally a daily special for breakfast and sometimes there is a pack up / bait / packed lunch.

Now to breakfast.

I thought a little trip to Germany would fit this morning so Florence is making bread rolls, soft and crusty, Leo is baking / frying / boiling eggs and Fernando is serving Apfelkorn.

I put out a selection of cooked meats, cheeses, jam, nutella, marmalade and if you want that abomination that people wither love or hate, it is in a locked box in the garden, far from the café, that is where it is to be consumed.

Actually I watched a vid from 'Atomic Shrimp' the other day that featured the brown paste added to warm milk.

On its way @tattoonewbie I was surprised at some of the things that make up Hawaiian cuisine, lots of Spam and burger meat.

OP posts:
tattoonewbie · 01/09/2025 19:46

Urgh. Spam is just so….wartime in my head. Like emergencies only ! I had it grilled once as a child at my Auntie’s and was horrified.

sashh · 02/09/2025 04:33

Morning.

At one of my primary schools they used to force feed us Span fritters. During lockdown one of my friends couldn't buy it in her local shop so I would buy it (online delivery) and drop it off hoping we didn't get 'caught'.

OK so Hawaiian cuisine is not popular.

But you mentioned 'wartime' so lets head to wartime Britain and breakfasts made 'on the ration'.

Ration book Porridge. Mock egg in a basket (reconstituted dried egg and national loaf, Leo needs some convincing), cheese pancakes (made with dried egg).

Florence is using stale national loaf to make bread pudding and Fernando has brown ale.

ScottBakula · 02/09/2025 05:33

Morning all,

How it your Dh doing @tattoonewbie ?

Leo is not the only one that needs convincing , but I will give eggs and national loaf a go , with camp coffee please @sashh

sashh · 02/09/2025 09:09

One 'egg' in a basket on its way.

Morning.

Sorry for the late start I had a bad night.

I'm just going to do a simple breakfast this morning, toast with things on, so eggs, cheese, beans, bacon in any combination.

Florence is making almond cakes and Fernando is making fruit cocktails.

OP posts:
tattoonewbie · 03/09/2025 12:31

Any chance of late breakfast. Just a bit of egg on toast please.

tattoonewbie · 03/09/2025 12:39

DH is not great and my pain is flaring again but I’m lowest on the totem pole of needs in the house right. Is hard work but I know a lot of us are struggling so a stiff upper lip / bracing hug or regular hug to us all

tattoonewbie · 04/09/2025 01:54

Morning ! Early start for me. Is it still technically bed time ? I went to bed at 9 as was so exhausted but now awake ! I’ve made a cup of tea and have a ginger biscuit if anyone wants one

sashh · 04/09/2025 03:48

Morning.

That sounds tough @tattoonewbie .

OK breakfast, lets try Uganda for a change of scene.

Katogo, mandazi, sweet potatoes and Leo is making rolex.

Florence is making bread and chapattis and Fernando is serving waragi.

delicious

sashh · 05/09/2025 06:39

Morning.

Well it is getting chilly so we need something warming today.

The obvious front runner is porridge. I'm also going to make mushrooms on toast (probably with an egg because Leo).

Florence is making almond tarts and Fernando has Irish coffees.

sashh · 06/09/2025 05:19

Morning.

It's cold and wet here today so we need something warm. IRL I bought some portobello mushrooms so I'll bake their HP equivalent stuffed with cherry tomatoes and cheese.

Florence is making croissants, Leo is scrambling eggs to go on the side of the mushrooms and Fernando has Irish coffee and hot chocolate to keep us warm.

OP posts:
MinnieMountain · 06/09/2025 05:29

Morning

It’s getting nippy first thing isn’t it?

A hot chocolate and a croissant to dip it in please. I’m going to sit in the garden under a blanket.

How are you now @sashh ?

sashh · 06/09/2025 07:46

On its way.

Don't ask about my health, nothing serious but totally fed up with my GP practice.

OP posts:
sashh · 07/09/2025 03:57

Morning.

Lets have a trip to Switzerland. Florence is making zopf and gipfeli. I'm making rosti and landjager with cheese.

Leo is frying eggs to top the rosti.

Fernand has found, who knows where (I suspect Leo has a hand in this) a St Bernard that will brig a barrel of brandy around its neck.

OP posts:
sashh · 08/09/2025 04:04

Morning.

Well the St Bernard has gone home. He was quite sweet but oh so big.

And when Leo washed him! Well lets say you don't want to stand next to a St Bernard shaking off water.

I think I'll keep things simple today, Florence is making baguettes so I'll just lay out a selection of meats, cheese, cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumber, pickles and Leo is making scotch eggs.

Fernando is making Bucks Fizz.

sashh · 09/09/2025 03:30

Morning.

I'm just going to make a pot of tea and watch the garden, the leaves are turning red and brown, so pretty.

OP posts:
ScottBakula · 09/09/2025 07:40

Morning all, it's a bit brisk this morning ! But its bright and dry so I am grateful for that.
I am going for a colonoscopy tomorrow so I can only eat for the next few hrs .
Can I have a couple of rounds of white bread toasted and a black coffee please @sashh .
And thank you for starting the colonoscopy thread , it's been helpful.

sashh · 11/09/2025 04:27

Morning.

@ScottBakula I'll serve some low residue white toast and tea. I'll make you a pack up for afterwards, a flask of tomato soup with some crusty bread followed by an almond cake made by Florence.

I'll get her to make enough for all of us, Leo is making convent eggs and Fernando is making hot chocolate.

May I have toast and strawberry jam please?

I’m going on holiday to France today. Does anyone want anything bringing back?

Toast and jam, not a problem.

Could you get me some red wine?

OP posts:
sashh · 12/09/2025 05:48

Morning.

@ScottBakula how are you today?

I think we need a bit of a treat today so I will ask Florence to make churros with a chocolate dip. Leo is making pickled eggs so they need some time to pickle.

Fernando has some sangria to go with the churros.

OP posts:
ScottBakula · 12/09/2025 06:35

Morning all, @sashh I was ok the day after the procedure apart from a really bad headache which will be down to the dehydration, I got home at about 8.30 and had drank 3 lts of water by 10pm .
I was very hungry too so thank you for the pack up.

@MinnieMountain , can you bring me back some cheese please, aalllll the cheeseeeee but particularly Camember, brie and Stilton.

Churros and chocolate sounds good to me @sashh please can I have some and a glass of sparkling water.

sashh · 13/09/2025 04:47

Morning.

Glad it went well @ScottBakula it's a strange thing having a conversation with someone while they have what looks like a shower hose up your bum.

Now I have put everyone off their breakfast I'll start cooking.

Florence has baked some lovely soft bread rolls so I'm going to do sausages, bacon, mushrooms and lorne.

So put your butty orders in. Leo is Frying eggs and Fernando has some spiced tea whisky.
