We ar being treated. 2 new dramas

but in the same day and time - sort it out bbc and itv !!!

Without Sin (ITVX) is a heavyweight thriller cut from the same cloth as Happy Valley (https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/happy-valley) and Save Me, so fans of deep-rooted trauma and grief rejoice, if that’s the sort of thing you do.

Either way, this Nottingham-based four-parter is a very strong entry to the genre, taut and so
lid and compelling, and it does not outstay its welcome.

The ever watchable Vicky McClure (https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2022/jan/15/vicky-mcclure-line-of-duty-started-with-nothing) stars as Stella, a cabby grieving for her teenage daughter Maisy, who was murdered several years earlier.

As you might expect, Stella’s life has been utterly transformed by the tragedy. She has split up with her husband, Paul (Sherwood’s Perry Fitzpatrick), who is in a new relationship and who has been able to at least offer the illusion of moving forward.

She has cut herself off from her social life, smokes too much weed, and gave up the office job she loved to spend long nights driving around the city dealing with drunken and difficult customers.

She is in stasis, unable to do much more than simply get through the hours.

Fellow This Is England alumnus Johnny Harris plays Charles Stone, a drug dealer who grew up on the same estate as Stella, who became the muscle for a local gang, and who is now in prison for Maisy’s murder.

Charles is hard to read and prone to violent outbursts. He requests to be part of a restorative justice programme, in which a mediator reaches out to Stella and Paul for a meeting, with the idea that Charles will atone for his sins and that somewher
e, somehow, Stella and Paul may get the answers they need to process what has happened to their family.

It does not play out like that. The initial meeting in prison is the spark for a thickly knotted conspiracy of sorts that slowly unravels into a dense mystery, in which nobody can be taken at their word.

It does an excellent job of keeping you guessing as to everyone’s motives and levels of guilt. There is a mess of half-truths to untangle, among family, friends, organised criminals, small-time crooks, lost kids and hopeless adults.

Everyone is hiding something, and it’s all just waiting to come out of the shadows.

The title points towards the idea that nobody is entirely innocent. When it comes to the drug trade, Without Sin makes its point about middle-class hypocrisy very well, without laying it on too thick.

It has a strong grasp of the politics of small working-class communities, in which no secret lasts for long, because someone always knows someone who’s been talking about it.

It also hints at complicated feelings around social mobility. Stella is from the estate, but she and Paul lived in a big, fancy house, and once drove a Range Rover.

Some of the characters have a foot in each world, and it isn’t always comfortable for them. These are small details, but they give it a richness beyond the traditional whodunnit-type structure that it hangs on.

When it comes to the mystery of Maisy, it twists and turns. In Nottingham (https://www.theguardian.com/uk/nottingham), Stella becomes obsessed with finding out the truth of what happened to her daughter, while in prison,

Charles is dealing with his psychological issues, as well as the politics of the criminal underworld and even the politics of his own cell.

Each of the four episodes finishes on a proper cliffhanger, and by the time it all comes out in the wash in the finale, there have been more than enough dead ends and red herrings to keep us hooked.

It just about avoids the occasional ITV drama curse of having a run of solid episodes then throwing it all away on an implausible, far-fetched ending.

Ordinary @Clawdy ?🙀😛

Yes, nothing I hadn't seen in other crime dramas really - dodgy criminal, hints about gangs, missing girl, mum determined to find truth....but to be fair, it's early doors! Twists ahead, hopefully.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/05/2023 10:25

That just about sums up all dramas /thrillers 😂

I did like the twist at the end

Did he or didn't he

Yes I binged it last year too. I'm off!

Shame on you @daffodilandtulip 🙀🙀🙀

It's tricky nowadays. It used to be that catch up was just that - now they seem to put things on there before they put them on tv. It's confusing!

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/05/2023 20:35

Seems ITVX show things before show on itv

Usually a few months before

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/05/2023 22:30

Why say he did then

To cover for the ones who did and have taken other girl

What do they have on him to make him confess and do 3yrs so far in prison

But he never actually admitted to doing it till he recorded that message for them that they listened to.
Guessing that he denied it but jury found him guilty because he was there with the girl and his fingerprints would have been on her as I believe he had touched her.
But he said in the message to them that he did itz probably in an effort to get them to come see him so he could tell them about the new missing girl

Ducatifan · 17/05/2023 06:29

I’m finding it good but really very slow. Only 2 episodes to go and the story really isn’t that much further forward.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/05/2023 10:11

Yes not much happened last night

Apart from the Drugs hubby Paul brought off the bad man Charles worked for

OP posts:
ilovebrie8 · 17/05/2023 16:36

It’s slow I’ll stick with it but not what I was expecting after the hype!

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/05/2023 21:53

Oh. Just reliesed con O'Neil is in this

Ans why does Charles always seem to whisper

His voice reminds me of someone

OP posts:
Jellykat · 17/05/2023 22:17

I've stuck with it, still dont reckon Charles did it Grin but they could be leading us up the garden path with that idea..

Con O Neil, really is such an excellent baddie!

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/05/2023 18:15

Yes Charles is def innocent

OP posts:
Ducatifan · 18/05/2023 18:21

I don’t think Charles did it either. I am leaning towards his son?

Jellykat · 18/05/2023 21:53

Woah!! Thats a twist and a half.....

martinisforeveryone · 19/05/2023 07:40

I stuck with it mainly because it was over four nights and had a good cast.

In the end though, despite the twists, it felt a bit hackneyed, as a drama, obviously not for people who’ve been caught up in the underworld of the drug trade in real life. Having watched, it’s not one I’d recommend.

Am looking forward to Maryland next week.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/05/2023 09:49

Oh wow. Just seen the ending as mini blondes poorly last night

I didn't expect that

I guessed from e1 it wasn't Charles

Def didn't expect Cleo

Maryland looks good but as away I may have to catch up when back

OP posts:
martinisforeveryone · 19/05/2023 10:17

It seemed obvious it wasn’t Charles, but I didn’t notice any kind of clue pointing at who it was. I was going with Charles’s son.

the80sweregreat · 19/05/2023 10:43

The ending felt a bit rushed. We didn't guess Chloe because we only really saw her in the last episode, before that it was ' mate of Maisie' or a bit on the video.
It wasn't bad though , I like the main actress who is always excellent and good to see Con McNeill ( think that's his name ) as he is very convincing too.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 20/05/2023 12:01

I gave up after two episodes,it really didn’t grab me at all. Very boring.

Ducatifan · 20/05/2023 12:50

I am always disappointed with endings like this one. All very rushed and into the last 10 minutes of the series. I much prefer characters from the start and following the twists and turns. Cleo didn’t come into it until we’ll into the last episode.

the80sweregreat · 20/05/2023 20:31

Vicky McClure is one of Britain's most talented actors though. She really can portray a million emotions in one look. She kind of embodies her characters. It is amazing

purpleme12 · 21/05/2023 23:41

People I'm only on episode 3 but when Jamal tells his cellmate 'you humiliated me out there now they're taking the piss'
What is it that he did to him?!

purpleme12 · 24/05/2023 01:30

The fact that it wasn't Charles was never supposed to be a secret though.
We were supposed to know about that from the start
