Is anyone watching this? Starts tonight on BBC1 or all episodes available on iPlayer.

I've put it on record

Taytocrisps · 14/05/2023 18:36

Yeah, I'm going to watch it. I don't have access to iPlayer so I'll be watching it as it's shown on TV.

IwantToRetire · 15/05/2023 19:02

There is alrady a no spoilers week by week thread - can we make this the spoiler thread. I am have watched 1st 2 episodes.

JaneJeffer · 15/05/2023 19:11

You'll need to get MNHQ to add spoilers to the title @IwantToRetire or there'll be ructions Grin

IwantToRetire · 15/05/2023 19:16

or there'll be ructions

Well yes, that is why I am asking politely before posting any spoilers, whilst mentioning that there just happens to be an existing week by week thread already!

And if fact I could get MNHQ to make the change. That would have to be done by OP.

JaneJeffer · 15/05/2023 19:29

Just saying. You're naive if you think everyone will read from the start of the thread.

hellocats · 15/05/2023 20:55

I've asked MN to add 'spoilers' to the title Grin

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 15/05/2023 21:40

Well done @hellocats I will now avoid this thread like the plague Grin

IwantToRetire · 16/05/2023 00:29

Thanks Hellocats for doing this. There is the other thread for week by week!

IwantToRetire · 16/05/2023 00:35

So I watched the first 2 episodes, and enjoyed then is a sort soft sunday lull way.

But I am afraid once the story started some of the plot lines all seemed a bit obvious ie taken from earlier films and dramas.

But maybe I shouldn't complain, as it is meant to be about real life and they certainly wouldn't get away with changing history.

I suppose the Australians hate or treat with contempt the Brits because of the history of the UK shipping criminals (and many innocent people) to Australia so there wouldn't be much love lost to "mother country".

I wonder if the influx of Brits did change attitudes.

And of course the Indigenous Australians had every reason to hate them - us.

Netaporter · 16/05/2023 04:27

I’ve watched it all. Didn’t love it but it was on in the background whilst I was carrying out some boring tasks. Happy to discuss when more people have caught up!

Groovy48592747 · 16/05/2023 10:49

Watched all episodes, though I would have liked to have found out what happened to the characters in the end, did they move on etc, unless they have a second series!

Anyone think what Kate did at the end was shocking?! I can't believe she did that, I was cringing!

Oh god I'm on episode 5 and cringing so much at Kate in the house!

Mammyloveswine · 16/05/2023 13:00

Omg the start of episode 6!!!

HeartStarRose · 16/05/2023 14:28

Half way through. Some of it's a hard watch! I think I thought it would be more like Call the Midwife with some feel-good alongside the heartbreaks, but it's very tense.

Mammyloveswine · 16/05/2023 15:01

I'm looking forward to series 2! Should def have been 10 episodes not just 6!

Groovy48592747 · 16/05/2023 15:06

They paint the UK as so dark and gloomy! And Kate rattling the gates trying to get to her son. So clichéd, some of it anyway.

I could slap that accountant (can't recall his name atm). Very nasty man. Really need to watch it again, think I went through it too fast. I wish it was more uplifting, leaves so many questions!

IwantToRetire · 16/05/2023 16:35

I'm up to episode 4 now and am beginning to think that the script must have been written by one of those AI bots / apps or whatever.

It's like they have jammed in any storyline about Australia already featured in a film or tv series and then added a dollop of soap personal dramas.

So not really that taken with it.

It could have been really interesting in terms of whole families leaving every thing behind, and exploring about fitting into a different culture. Looking at why if the Aussies hated Poms so much they actually preferred them to come than any other nationality. Assisted passage was paid for by both the UK and Australian Governments.

And I know the history of forced adoptions is really terrible, and for many still not resolved, and it has been covered very well in fiction and documentary (and in some Long Lost Family episodes) so I find it a bit flip to have it as bit of a storyline.

I wonder if it has been shown in Australia and what they think?!

iwishiwasonhol · 16/05/2023 21:15

Ive watched it all ,cant say i really enjoyed it to much going on but at the same time not much going on if you get what i mean ,think it should have just focused on the one or two family/person and covered more topics in depth ,can someone remind why the hut blew up with arty inside,,what happened to nutjob aussie that ended up in hospital and who was the woman at the end when the next lot arrived was she the one who wanted to end her life if so what happened to her hubby and kids , what happened to the beachbar that they were planning on building so many unexplained /unfinished topics

AuntieMarys · 16/05/2023 21:21

We saw 2 episodes and thought it was utter crap.

Freshfoods · 16/05/2023 21:21

I'm enjoying it so far, just got to episode 2 on iPlayer. I haven't read the whole thread so have avoided the spoilers. I know racism was prevalent in the UK in the fifties but hadn't quite realized how dreadful it was for the native Australians.

Netaporter · 16/05/2023 21:23

@iwishiwasonhol the hut didn’t blow up, it disintegrated due to lack of maintenance and attention to the termites the Italians were complaining of. The next bus load is probably the cast of s2. The woman who wanted to end it all was saved by JJ. Presumably the next stage of her life is in s2.
