Just finished episode 6 - I’d sum it up by saying that the series started off promisingly and then got more and more disappointing as it went on. It was so disjointed and far fetched - no proper character development. And how weedy JJ managed to get the rucksack of rocks off Shelia and haul her up from the depths in that short time is beyond me.

Ha ha exactly.

We decided it had turned into Waterloo Road by the end. No opportunity missed for a quick dramatic incident.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 04/06/2023 09:18

The other thing I found unbelievable was Kate's change of heart towards Henry - in fact the whole relationship. Why was she so frightened of him when there was no evidence that he was abusive? What was with the running away and wrestling on the ground? And then a couple of days later she was cuddling him. That's what I think was missing from this series - there was no convincing following through of the characters' emotions, no gradual or subtle development. One minute Ron wants to kill Terry, one panic attack later he's sitting comforting him on the beach.

Yes. The Kate story had great potential but it was cheap at every point.
The coincidence of her child just happening to show up for a jab. When it started to happen I thought it was going to be her making a mistake, to show she can’t let go of him and is seeing him everywhere, because it actually being him was too ridiculous for the writers to go there. But they did.

Laughing at the latest summaries! 'It turned into Waterloo Road' especially 🤣

If there's a second series I will be very surprised!

Sadly I think you’re right about a second series. Which is such a pity, there were some great characters and situations and it had the potential to be a sort of Call The Midwife in its look at a period of recent history.
My mum had cousins who were Ten Pound Poms and she was really interested when I told her about it.
I wonder if there are some really great writers behind it tearing their hair out at the way their brilliant concept was sexed up and ruined.

Ooh great, thanks for this!

OssieShowman · 10/06/2023 13:44

I haven’t seen it. It’s on Stan here in Aus.
I just have this funny story.
My friends Mum was a Ten Pound Pom.
Mum was kindly invited to a party, and was told to “bring a plate”
She did just that, brought a plate … an empty plate.
The differences must have been so difficult.

I've watched one ep but didn't really enjoy it.

Did the family manage to leave the huts at all?

I'm guessing that that accommodation was always meant to be temporary until they found jobs or did they have to stay in it for two years?

Some people stayed for two years other people got jobs with accommodation in other areas more quickly. My husband had two uncles who did this one was there for two years. The documentary on BB4 showed a camp and it was almost identical to the one in the drama.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/06/2023 11:09

I'll just add that according to the documentary accommodation in the Outback was even worse.

It gets better! It’s quite gritty. Am surprised by how good Michelle Keegan is in this.

It’s my Sunday evening watch when I’m round at my mum’s house having a late Sunday roast.

Mid watching. It's obv a drama but loving the social history side. I was in Oz for a while and if you head into outback racism is rife

Can anyone tell me what happened to the boy that was hit by the car at the end of episode 1?

TheYear2000 · 19/07/2023 21:39

@Mia5678
In one of the later episodes, it transpired the boy had been injured but not killed as the English man had feared. I think they deliberately didn't take him to hospital for fear of him being taken into care but can't remember 100%

Mia5678 · 19/07/2023 21:50

Thanks - I’ve only watched episode 1 and was a bit shocked at the hit and run and wasn’t sure if to continue watching the rest of the series.

entitledparents · 19/07/2023 23:46

As @TheYear2000 says it takes a twist later on. The important point for me is for people to be aware how aboriginals were & still are treated
