Wealthy family are quite close to home for me. Came into this half way through, saw it in our local press, then forgot.

Good on them all, hope Glen gets his degree. Hot if he cuts his pony off!

You wouldn't know the wealthy family were rich if you bumped into them in the street. I like that.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 20/05/2010 22:02

That's so generous!

expatinscotland · 20/05/2010 22:05

I'm so glad they took the help and got out of there.

Good on him... I loved that episode.

SebbysMum · 20/05/2010 22:06

Very moving. I found the bit about playing on computer for 4 hours a day, 6 hours at weekend, almost as upsetting as life on the estate. Almost, but not quite. The tyranny of the gangs on the estate is a national scandle

tibni · 20/05/2010 22:06

Really good programme and good outcome.

SebbysMum · 20/05/2010 22:06

scandal

DinahRod · 20/05/2010 22:09

Sarah is gauche, no? Finding her movements a bit awkward. Am just watching it now on 4+

expatinscotland · 20/05/2010 22:09

I agree, Patter.

i really liked this episode - both families had things to work on, whether socially or environmentally.

I am so glad that they accepted the help and that they became friends. Feel sorry for Sarah, she seemed lonely and vulnerable, bless her.

Does anyone else think that this sort of programme is important for both families? To show them (poor) both sides of the coin, that life can and is better than what they know and to strive for better and show the rich that life isnt always ponies and swimming pools?

PosyPetrovaPauline · 20/05/2010 22:21

Sarah reminded me of a couple of girls and teens i know. Neither are unhappy - just a bit 'alternative'
Bit of a tomboy I thought

Both families lovely and great they found one another

paddingtonbear1 · 20/05/2010 22:33

Really liked this weeks episode. So glad Dom's family managed to get off that estate. Think Glen will make a great teacher.

Monty100 · 20/05/2010 23:39

I was watching this up until the hotel in Chelsea and I had an unexpected visitor, just left so missed 4+ as well.

Someone tell me what happened please????

MissAnneElk · 21/05/2010 08:29

Monty, Sarah's family found a three bedroom privately rented house for them and offered to guarantee the rent for them for the next 6 years so that Glen could qualify as a teacher. Dominique's family accepted the offer!

Sometimes on these programmes you think nothing in the long term will really change for the poor family but I can really see this as an opportunity for Dominique's family to change their situation permanently. I agree with the poster who said it was important for them to move from the estate before the young son started school and got sucked in to estate life.

Pennies · 21/05/2010 08:52

It will be very interesting to revistit in 6 years time and see what happened. I wish them the best of luck.

JaxTellersOldLady · 21/05/2010 10:57

Pennies - I wonder if they will do a follow up programme. That would be very intersting to see later in life.

satc2bringiton · 21/05/2010 10:59

Great episode this week, really pleased the family moved, and the Dad get to train to be a teacher.

For the first time I actually felt a bit more sorry for the 'rich' child. She seemed so lonely in that big house. When Danielle asked her why she didnt spend more time in the garden and she just replied 'I dont have anyone to play with' . At least Danielle had a lovely family life.

DH was also at Sarah playing the 18 cert x-box game!

Also I was disgusted at the council asking for all that money. How do they get away with that? Unbelieveable

Monty100 · 21/05/2010 10:59

MissAnne - Thank you .

'Also I was disgusted at the council asking for all that money. How do they get away with that? Unbelieveable'

It happens to tens of thousands of working poor families every year, that and working tax credit overpayment.

The correct calculations of each are far, far beyond the abilities of any claimant, the BBC once hired a team of qualified accountants to try to correctly calculate the amount of one person's working tax credit. they were unable to.

Claimants truly have no idea and have to rely on the council or HMRC to get it right.

If they don't, even if it's no fault of the recipients, they can come back, however many years later, and demand full whack, effectively endebting and trapping many working poor families into even greater poverty as what little benefit they got is usually completely cut off until the debt is paid back and they have to pay a sum every month they can very ill afford.

Half of all children in poverty have a working residential parent.

I'm glad this show highlighted what many working poor families face every day.

A common theme, however, in all these programmes, is inadequate, poor and even dangerous housing.

Who's watching? Does anyone really care?
