Anyone watching? That man gives physics a very good name...

OP posts:
Molesworth · 10/03/2010 13:32

HE CAN'T BE 42!

lostinwales · 10/03/2010 13:40

I am also a little bit in love with him, I can't fancy a man with no brain. Buuuut, does any one else struggle with

'things, can only get betterrrr, can only get betererer'

going round on a loop in their head, rather spoiling the whole 'I'm learning physics me' moment?

Oh and yes he is 42, slightly older than DH who looks the same age as him

OtterInaSkoda · 10/03/2010 13:56

Seashells - I read pop science books and watch sciencey stuff on TV and think I understand them, as I do so. Then try to explain what I've watched/read to others using words such as "yeah, and there was this ef-off great big squirty thing coming out of the sun only it wasn't a flare and I thing it came from the coronosphere", or "you know - the oojimiflip - the bit that's bigger in relative terms in a cat than it is in humans which is why they're better at catching mice".

Just as well I'm not a science teacher, really

Habbibu · 10/03/2010 14:13

Did anyone see this a while ago? he was great. You can see he wants to punch David King for being an idiot, but chooses to detroy him with Good Sense instead.

hannahsaunt · 10/03/2010 14:13

Did you see Space Hoppers on BBC 2 - 30 min prog for 7 - 11 (ish??) yo using Brian Cox footage from Solar prog along with other stuff to educate parents and children in parallel. It was fab.

Habbibu · 10/03/2010 14:14

About 3 1/2 mins in - 3:50 etc

OP posts:
OtterInaSkoda · 10/03/2010 14:19

Spacehoppers episodes 1 and 2 will be repeated at (I think, don't sue me if I'm wrong) 5:15 on the 13th and 14th. I'd Sky+ed them but as we unplug everything overnight it didn't record.

Habbibu · 10/03/2010 14:21

Oh! Oh! Oh! let's ask to have BC for a webchat! Put paid to the idea than MNers not interested in anything except children and biscuits!

OP posts:
OtterInaSkoda · 10/03/2010 14:24

Yes! Please someone ask!

He was ace with the thickies on Something for the Weekend.

I will have to namechange though otherwise he'll know I Google-stalked him. I might scare him

lostinwales · 10/03/2010 14:26

Thanks Habbibu, a very welcome bit of Brian for my afternoon cuppa, he made that David King look like a backward thinking idiot, what a worry that he was the government advisor for so long. I'd love to go out to dinner with Brian Cox, he's so enthusiastic about science, v sexy in my book. It's about time they made some attractive looking geeks. (apart from me of course, I'm a very attractive geek, snort)

OtterInaSkoda · 10/03/2010 14:28

Will watch the clips later when I'm at home.

paisleyleaf · 10/03/2010 16:56

this is quite funny

OtterInaSkoda · 10/03/2010 17:01

I have been giving this matter some consideration and have decided that I'm not in love with him, but I would like him as an uncle for my DS. Is that odd?

Habbibu · 10/03/2010 18:27

think it's v reasonable, otter.

OP posts:
Habbibu · 10/03/2010 18:32

have asked. One handed with ds trying to eat laptop, so may look unhinged.

OP posts:
BitOfFun · 10/03/2010 18:51

Yerrrs- I think he is just so smiley and enthusiastic that he is impossible not to like. He would have definitely made me more engaged with science at school. I was a bit of a dunce, but I love watching programmes like this now- it's all so fascinating, and certainly more accessible when explained by somebody who doesn't wear leather elbow patches.

SweetEm · 11/03/2010 21:34

Just watched it - fab isn't it and what I want to know is why physics students didn't look like that when I was at uni?

Sweeping generalisation coming up, but the physics bods were always uber-geeks or greasy metal-heads and practically all had glasses with veeerrrrryyyy thick lenses! (disclaimer - I did maths, so was not much better )

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 12/03/2010 07:38

Sweetem welcome to the shrine of Prof. Cox

Megletwantsittobesummer · 14/03/2010 21:02

on now!

Habbibu · 14/03/2010 21:11

Oh, thank you, Meglet!!!

OP posts:
Habbibu · 14/03/2010 21:26

oh sweet - wrote to NASA aged 7 asking for pictures of mars!

OP posts:
Megletwantsittobesummer · 14/03/2010 21:33

he's racking up an awful lot of air miles in this series isn't he

Habbibu · 14/03/2010 21:43

isn't he just? But I think it's working - the examples do make things clearer.

OP posts:
SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 15/03/2010 07:11

gah! pg knackeredness meant I went to bed 20mins in - I felt I wasn't doing him justice iplayer it is this evening!

I am always v envious of where they go for these trips - the Atlas mountains looked amazing!

lowenergylightbulb · 15/03/2010 07:20

Brian Cox does my head in. You'd think that he invented the LHC, the whole of physics and indeed the universe itself.

And his voice lacks gravitas.

Just because he looks pretty doesn't mean that he's a better physicist.
