Cried my way through it again this week

So happy for Joy

OneTwoBuckleMyShoe · 02/03/2010 22:06

Fab name choice although I am biased!

Northernlurker · 03/03/2010 08:16

I thought Kelly and the g&a was quite interesting to watch. Ok it looked like a bad idea but what she actually managed to do was all but knock herself out and deliver in what looked like a pretty comfortable fashion. Personally I couldn't bear to be on my back but she did seem to go right in to herself and that's how some people do it. I thought seeing her mum and her sister hugging afterwards was amazing, the birth was such a high point for them after the brother's death. I also thought the sister was a very good birth partner and the whole family fully justified the midwife's decision to have them all in. The way dad was holding that leg - you could see he'd done it before!

I must agree, I remember being in that zone and you just felt like if you moved or stopped to speak to someone it put you back into the pain and you had to start over

nigglewiggle · 03/03/2010 09:58

Presumably the midwife is considering the fact that dealing with that level of pain (even with considerable amounts of G&A ) is exhausting. If she allows the mother to remain in a position that does not assist the descent of the baby then the mother will be too exhausted to push once the baby is ready to deliver and medical intervention will be more likely.

She might just fancy a cup of tea and a sit down though .

Kelly had a lovely birth, shame the midwife didn't just leave her alone, everything was fine from what I could see.
Am I the only one who is at the mention of a "full hand" internal? I never heard of such a thing, after 2 babies. Can someone explain? Lulu, Mears etc?

NorbertDentressangle · 03/03/2010 10:31

I watched this last night and was quite interested in Kelly's birth experience. Now admitedly I don't know about the cons of too much G&A (although I do know about the pros from experience ) but she seemed to know exactly what she was doing despite going against the recommended positions etc.

She described how her previous births had gone and how this one would go and sure enough she was spot on.

She seemed, on the one hand, to be totally 'stoned' but on the other hand seemed completely focussed in on what she was doing and controlling it the way she wanted to.

Northernlurker · 03/03/2010 10:50

I think the midwife was worried about them both getting enough oxygen. The baby pressing down on the aorta can make you feel utterly awful - says she who did once lie on her back in late pregnancy (not labour) and nearly passed out. However Kelly was obviously doing ok with it and baby showed no signs of distress. I think that you have to remember this was her fifth baby and it doesn't get easier - you just know what pain is coming. I certainly felt that with dd3. In my case I just wanted to move and get things over with. I think Kelly wanted to get herself away from it as much as possible and did so by labouring in that way.

FabIsDoingPrettyWell · 03/03/2010 10:53

Just watched this and sobbed when Ellie was born. I had an emergency section with ds1 and could barely watch Joy's delivery but I have never been so happy to hear a baby cry in all my life. I hope she does have another one and she sneezes the next one out.

LilyBolero · 03/03/2010 11:17

Flying Duchess - 'baby's had enough' - meant was having heart decelerations, showing it was not coping physically with the contractions, hence the need to get it out quickly.

Well, I sniveled my way through this weeks episode. Again. SO happy for Joy and Fabio, they look very in love with Ellie and Joy is glowing with motherhood. Aww!

I nearly passed out watching the epidural go in though. Blugh. I'm glad I didn't see the size of the needle when I had one...

LilyBolero · 03/03/2010 12:15

FD - I think the prob was it wasn't recovering. I had that with ds1 as well, and it was scary, and they did blood tests from the top of his head to check blood oxygen levels etc. Tbh, I think getting that baby out pronto was the least invasive thing they could do - much better than blood tests/forceps/ventouse/CS.

I had homebirths with dd and ds2, and am planning another in a few weeks with ds3, and have a fab community mw, who is not afraid to be assertive when need be - tbh I find it better than the wishy washy ones, much better to have someone saying 'push now', stop, breathe, cough etc....She managed to avoid any stitches with ds2 and dd, despite them both being 10lb+, and no pain relief at all (not even g&a) - I have no doubt that if she had been more 'do you feel like doing this?' I would have felt flustered at having to make decisions at that stage.

porcamiseria · 03/03/2010 12:38

Last night was great

sobbed like a baby when Joy and Fabio got their baby

How cool was Mumof5!!! I want her labour please

nice to see some happy stories and not the wailing howls for a change

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 03/03/2010 12:53

First time I watched it - it was great! Even though I am pregnant it was great to watch (and I've watched hundreds on SKY before but not while pregnant). Intresting about the MW wanting to get Kelly up - I was desperate to not lie down last time and I was told I have to. I ended up giving birth in a half rolled over position (as in half my body rolled over, not my whole body half rolled over!) because I was scrambling to get round and onto all fours or squat or something. Hopefully this time I will have a MW who doesn't want me strapped to the bed

WorzselMummage · 03/03/2010 20:39

I have just watched it and I LOVED it.

Joy and Fabio were wonderful, I am so happy for them and what a beautiful little girl.

Wonderful

jibbs · 04/03/2010 12:36

Joy and Fabio are lovely. So much in love and so supportive of each other.

Joy was so funny

Their baby is so beautiful and they will make such wonderful parents.

nomorecake · 09/03/2010 16:01

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 09/03/2010 18:09

I have tissues ready for tonight - I love this series

30andLurking · 09/03/2010 18:12

Oh dammit, DH is home tonight - means I can't sit in my PJs mainlining Galaxy and blubbing, thoroughly enjoying this, whilst MNing, as per last week.

Would pretending to work to go and watch in the privacy of my study be so very bad??

nomorecake · 09/03/2010 18:39

nah, 30and lurking, sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
Dh is under strict instructions not to disturb me.
