seriously though, nobodr ever says - 'oh are you pregnant? why don't you sponsor a child instead"

I know, it's interesting isn't it? I don't know what i'd have done if I couldn't have children.

cheers paolosgirls, so it seems my marriage is destined to fail

interesting responses
the reason I raised the question is that angelina could make a big differnece ecconomincally to the organisation looking after the child she adpoted that presumable mere mortals on ordinary incomes could not. Also, and I understand that this is not the sole motivation for adoptive parents, we do not know that Angelina cannot have children herself.

Hi Suzy, not having a go at you at all, but I do find it quite amazing that we expect so much more from adoptive parents than bio-parents. There are lots of rich film stars/industrialists etc that have children - we don't expect them all to found orphanages or criticise them for not doing so - just because they have kids.
From what I've read Angelina was always more interested in adopting her family than producing it from her body - it was a choice, and I don't think there is anything very sinister in that. Is it only OK to adopt without endowing an orphanage if you are medically unable to conceive?
Angelina Jolie is also a UN ambassador for children, fundraises and - I would guess - probably donates her own money for children so I suspect she is probably doing a hell of a lot more for the world's children than most, yet the fact that she is an adoptive parent seems to be something she is regularly criticised for. It doesn't seem fair to me.
(and I'm not a fan of hers particularly either)

don't be amazed aloha, I dont expect more, I am raising the points for debate

My mother adopted my sister from a Salvation Army hosptial but I didn't expect her to do more, so I do understand a bit about adoption

aloha · 14/07/2005 23:24

Well, I do think that there is a general expectation that adoptive parents should do more and be better than the rest of us. Mind you, I was using 'you' as a synonym for 'one' rather than meaning 'you - SuzyWong'

I agree with aloha. I've never been a huge AJ fan but I do now admire her a lot. She does a lot for disadvantaged people. I saw an interview with her on News24 and basically she said she only does films to earn money and raise her profile enough to be in a position to help people. That is noble. She was also once quoted as saying IIRC that having her own child would make her feel guilty as it would mean one less child saved from an orphanage.

Listmaker, we're doing very well, thanks. When DH & I met it just felt right. After 4 months we felt as though we'd been together a lot longer. To us, the idea of TTC was the most natural thing in the world ! Our DD is almost 3 and we're still on the up.

Have you seen this, a comment from the League of African Develpment in paragraph 4
