I have a feeling this is going to be awful actually, they are focusing on lone parents

Just starting on C4 now.

Interestingly though the programme was filmed 10 months ago and all 7 are still in employment so all those barriers to work that they felt stood in their way initially were obviously surmountable for them...

expat, unfortunately the housing association I rent from doesn't allow any of the tenants to run any business from home, including childminding. I had thought to do that as I was a nanny but there you go.

SheRa, there is also the fact that the single mother is sneered at so much in this society that to return to the workplace is scary.

That sucks, TwoIf!

'Everyone has childcare options - if they want to look for them. I live in Doncaster and there are loads of summer clubs for all age groups; sports, art etc. Otherwise, do what many other mums do - ask friends, take turns looking after others' kids, beg relatives, take unpaid leave when they're sick - not to mention great childminders, playgroups and so on. That's the real world, not living off benefits with the top Virgin TV package, a massive plasma screen, broadband internet access and professional portraits of your kids on the walls! I'd love that too, but would feel sick to think that others had paid for it!'

REal world. Not everyone has childcare options. If they don't have friends or relatives who will be free babysitters. Or they have disabled children. Or can get or afford these holiday schemes.
That is the real world.

I have tried getting a job but the job centre wont help me cos I'm not on benefits. The interviews I have had (and its low paid cos despite qualifications I have been a SAH for 18 years) either say NO straight away when they see my wheelchair or cant accomodate my child's numerous hospital appointments and admittances. I feel like giving up but with dh only able wo work part time (he's dd's main carer) we need some money coming in.

Im watching this now
That polka dot woman is awful

and
at the elevate program
at the govt privatising the back to work system
at the woman running this course - in what ways is she boosting their confidence exactly???

cocolepew · 26/08/2009 15:16

I've only got around to watching this. They are just lumping everyone together, obviously they don't care where they are found work, they (the company) just want paid. No consideration was given to the woman's qualifications or childcare needs.

I'd have put Hayley threw the window on the first day.
