Very sad. They wound me up from the beginning by smoking when pregnant.

Tiggy - completely agree with everything in that post. And your second para sums up exactly what Rochdale is like - has been since the 90s when I was first old enough to be aware of these things, and still is now.

But I am wondering why you all think hoodie girl is gay. Do you really truly think that (and if so you have a better gaydar than I do)?

Is it actually just that she wasn't sleeping with a boyfriend, and said that her 15/16 year old friends who sleep around are essentially whores, and thought getting pregnant at that age was stupid, all of which is clearly a very different attitude to the norm amongst her peers? Because her values are the same as mine and a lot of other people who are straight, so I don't see how you can infer she's gay just from those values. She didn't say anything along the lines of "ugh, boys are icky". So I don't see how you can infer that she is gay just because she wasn't doing the same as her friends. Maybe it is just that she is a stronger, more intelligent person with a bit more common sense than the rest.

Have to admit, I thought she was probably gay too.

She looked like a lesbian, to be blunt. i did actually think it was a boy at first.

She was very tomboyish in her mannerisms, body language, and the way she dressed (no make-up, hiding her hair etc) looked like she was trying to suppress/hide any femininity. She was very physical and aggressive, like she had lots of testosterone. She wanted to join the army or the police force (sorry to stereotype, but short of wanting to be a PE teacher she just about ticked all the boxes career-wise ). She never mentioned any boys in her life even though she was actually the prettiest of all the girls featured, whereas all her peers seem to be obsessed with them. Plus she hung out with an openly gay guy, which is probably not an easy thing to do in that environment, and last but not least she's managed to get to the ripe old age of sixteen and not get pregnant, which given the track record of her peer group is something of a miracle. I could be wrong about her sexuality, it's just a hunch. Maybe even she doesn't know it yet!

It was sad to think that the girls had such low expectations of life. I think everyone feels special when they are pregnant and maybe the girls wanted attention . The hoodie one said she was moving on and wouldn't go back probably because she had more aspiration. She was also the one who didn't keep up her friendship once the other two were pregnant. I think there is hope for her.

Hey, I know this post was all the way back in 2009, I was only 7 at that time! But I watched the documentary recently and can tell you that all three girls are doing good now apparently! The “hoodie girl” Vanessa is now a mom and apparently owns her own business in Leicester and the other two girls are doing well too 😊honestly was an eye opener watching it, hate to say it though I don’t think the world has gotten any better in the last 16 years lol.
