yes it is fascinating!!!

) but then I am obsessed with education and childrens minds in general

camembertandcranberry · 17/03/2009 21:32

It is.

Bit shocked that they showed which school his kids go to....

My dh went to the same school as DB and it was pushy parent territory in a big way so I'm not surprised he feels the way he does and wants his own kids to have a more relaxed education.

NotAnOtter · 17/03/2009 21:35

deferred gratification

NotAnOtter · 17/03/2009 21:36

hmm cranberry what db says and what he does.......

camembertandcranberry · 17/03/2009 21:37

Am going to try that experiment on ds tomorrow.
With Green and Blacks chocolate though...his fave. I'd give him about 4 seconds and he'll scoff it.

camembertandcranberry · 17/03/2009 21:37

Yes I imagine so NAO...no-one admits to being a pushy parent....well not in the UK anyway.

camembertandcranberry · 17/03/2009 21:38

UGHHHHHHH that American chant just then....wtf???

hippipotamiHasLostNinePounds · 17/03/2009 21:38

camembert, I don't think that was his dc's school. His dc were not wearing uniform on the way to school.

NotAnOtter · 17/03/2009 21:42

chant caused chundering here

the whole school

NotAnOtter · 17/03/2009 21:43

totally going to do experiment with my toddler!!!

camembertandcranberry · 17/03/2009 21:44

No but Hippo there was a picture or some school letter on the wall at DB's house with the name of the school clearly on there (and he is in Hampstead so I know it makes sense as the school name was an area within Hampstead).

camembertandcranberry · 17/03/2009 21:44

Gosh Americans really are very different - as in that chant thing.

NotAnOtter · 17/03/2009 21:51

what did the growth mindset parents reward?

NotAnOtter · 17/03/2009 21:52

sorry missed that bit...

camembertandcranberry · 17/03/2009 21:53

Me too - am too busy Mumsnetting LOL.

Was the point that you should positively reinforce effort and not results ....don't say 'oh you're so clever' too much and more 'you must have worked so hard'?

NotAnOtter · 17/03/2009 22:03

yes i think you are right
have just ordered her book actually

i LOVED LOVED LOVED that program
best thing in ages

camembertandcranberry · 17/03/2009 22:08

It was excellent wasn't it.

DH and I are very guilty of the 'clever boy' thing with ds and have just agreed we're going to lay off with that from now on. I had read before that it's not good to praise results and better to praise effort but hadn't been convinced until this programme.

V. Interesting prog. David Badiels comment about wanting to let his dcs grow into who they want to be, really rang true for what I want for my dc's.

camembertandcranberry · 17/03/2009 22:10

The maths a'level candidates dad was truly awful.

OP posts:
NotAnOtter · 17/03/2009 22:11

I am pleased with myself....wait till you hear

being ever so caring pushy parent myslef - I had been testing ds's reading age tonight with two tests

i did them and then he ran off

I told him how great he was for doing them and guess what???? I meant it!

polishes halo!

NotAnOtter · 17/03/2009 22:12

hmm methinks although i agree HUGELY with the aspiration - when your dcs hit secondary age things change....

hippipotamiHasLostNinePounds · 18/03/2009 08:13

oh sorry camenbert - I missed that letter

Great programme though!

southeastastra · 18/03/2009 08:15

only watched the first bit, the marshmallow bit made me laugh though. so it proves they make adults who are more 'level headed' and....

hippipotamiHasLostNinePounds · 18/03/2009 08:16

I am very guilty of doing the clever boy / clever girl thing
Will have to try and stop that.

I did not like the maths boys' dad (no idea about where the apostrophy goes in that one sorry )
And both those boys wanting to be an actuary? That is too much of a coincidence - they were told that's what they were going to be by their father.
I also think going to uni at 14 is a huge mistake. Part of uni is the socialising, the growing up as a person. At 14 the boys won't be able to do that. I fear they are going to be awkward adults
Rich maybe, but happy?

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/03/2009 10:45

I watched this, it was interesting, but DB soooo has unresolved issues about his parents, I just wanted to shout at him:

You're grown up
You're successful
Just stop having a go at your parents and MOVE ON!

Bit inexcusable for him to use a tv prog to publicly shame his dad for bad parenting 30 years ago, I thought.
