and what has the ripper got to do with it?

Basically everything is tied to corruption and cover-up at the same police unit. Last week the journalist who found out the truth about the cover-up of the murder of the little girls went in and shot the man who killed them at a local club. He was set up to do this by the corrupt police. Straight after he did it, the corrupt police came in with guns and killed any witnesses (so they thought).

Two witnesses survived, the rent boy and the barmaid. The rent boy was the one who told Hunter (this week's episode) what happened. The barmaid was murdered in a Ripper-style murder by the weasly looking corrupt policeman. Weasly looking policeman was then killed by the other corrupt coppers, and the murder was set up to look like Hunter did it then shot himself. Hunter had to be killed because he'd realised that the murder of the barmaid was not linked to the Ripper.

The retired policeman who was murdered with his daughter had also known what was going on and looked like he might be about to grass everyone up.

That's my take on it - anyone else?!

southeastastra · 13/03/2009 08:12

bum i missed this as i was arsing around on here, was it as good as last week?

Piffle · 13/03/2009 08:33

And it was bloody good!

TsarChasm · 13/03/2009 08:38

It's good but blimey it's so grim. Even the colour in it it toned down to 70's brown and grey.

I'm noticing that the main character seems to get it at the last minute. Quite shocking.

charitygirl · 13/03/2009 18:42

I'm assuming that the hero of next weeks finale WON'T die, otherwise it's all a bit too depressing. I don't know if David Morrissey's character will be the hero next time (or is he already too compromised to be the good guy?) but he's definintely going to be central.

I thought last night's ep was brilliant Although I'm finding all the violence against girls and women very bleak - it really stays with you. Itso evokes the reasons for people's fury (especially womens') against the W Yorks police during the Ripper investigation.

LaDiDaDi · 13/03/2009 21:58

I've just watched it and I thought it was rteally good, I found it more watchable than last week's episode, less violence was actually shown imo though more was implied.

I think that David Morissey's charchter will be the hero in an imperfect way.

Looking forward to it.

themoon66 · 13/03/2009 22:03

Last night's episode was much more watchable than last week's I thought.

It made me feel quite emotional as it brought back my teenage years... the graffiti 'ripper 12, police nil'. I remember being very very scared waiting for buses in the dark or having to make sure I was home from the shops in Bradford and Leeds by nightfall.

xfabba · 13/03/2009 22:05

thanks for that summary i just rewatched the end properly and get it now. So the high up police commisioner types were all in on it too. Why were they covering up sean bean being a paedo in the first place? because there were other policemen an the club with him and in on the paedo ring?

I'm not surprised moon66 - I found it evocative, and I wasn't even hardly born, let alone in W Yorkshire!

Bloody terrifying - what a bastard.

[stating the obvious emoticon)

puffling · 13/03/2009 23:11

I'm jus wondering if there'll be anyone left by the end of the next episode as everyone who ends up knowing anything will be shot!

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 13/03/2009 23:16

i remember a murder happened near my school and we all had to get picked up by pur parents for a while

ProfYaffle · 15/03/2009 15:56

I didn't understand why the police went in and shot everyone in the club. Why couldn't they just blame it on the journo who was dead anyway?

Does anyone know how much of it is based on fact?

verygreenlawn · 15/03/2009 18:55

I agree, it was also weird the way they all had access to guns no questions asked (and when they were shooting in the club they had what looked like sub-machine guns; surely even at that time it would've been obvious more than one person was involved?) - still can't wait for next week though ....

LaDiDaDi · 18/03/2009 20:21

Did the journo kill himself? I assumed they killed everyone so that it wouldn't get out that they knew that the Sean Bean character was a paedophile.

fatjac · 19/03/2009 16:32

Finally got to watch this last night. I wish I'd recorded the first one because I watched that almost 2 weeks ago and had forgotten some of it. I will V+ tonights episode and watch it at the weekend while episode 2 is still fresh in my mind.

southeastastra · 19/03/2009 18:03

i'd like to know how much is factual too! shocking. grim but brilliant

Whizzz · 19/03/2009 18:07

It's grim but it's gripping.

Anyone else recognise Archie from Emmerdale years ago as the good cop turned bad cop that shot Hunter. Took me ages to remember where I'd seen him before!

LaDiDaDi · 19/03/2009 23:02

Found tonight's episode really upsetting.

Wished the priest had been brought to justice somehow.

LaDiDaDi · 19/03/2009 23:02

Oh Whizz, just realised who you mean. Archie was Zoe's friend wasn't he?

weebump · 19/03/2009 23:14

God, that was grim on top of grim, with a great grimness.

Brilliant tv drama, though.

DrVickster · 19/03/2009 23:18

I too found this really upsetting.

Although it was excellent drama, I can believe all the rave reviews I've read in the press don't seem to mention how harrowing the stories are.

Some of the images have really stayed with me.

DrVickster · 19/03/2009 23:19

Sorry should have said 'CAN'T'

southeastastra · 20/03/2009 08:08

i don't agree really, most of the reviews i read mentioned that it wasn't exactly taggart.

although i will need to watch last nights again as it was confusing! great though

DrVickster · 20/03/2009 13:32

Must just be me then! Taggart it certainly wasn't!

LaDiDaDi · 20/03/2009 17:48

Can I clarify a couple of points?

When the police were interrogating Mr Laws and he said something like "John Dawson knows what I know", was that part in 1984? IE after John Dawson was shot dead in the Kharachi Club?

The bit where Maurice and the older police went to visit John Dawson's home and he was talking about swans, was that set around the time of the Claire Kemperly/Janette Garland deaths?

Why didn't the police persue mr Laws rather than maurice alone as rogue cop? Was it in case all of the corruption and brutality came out?

Had we seen the solicitors dad as a policeman earlier?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

I felt very disturbed by Mr Laws being the killer/lead paedophile after he appeared so comforting to the policewoman in the second episode.

Evil happens when good men stand by and do nothing and watch out for the wolf in sheep's clothing.
