OP posts:
NosfeRaahhTu · 26/10/2008 10:39

i thought this had been done fairly recently- but have just found out the derek jacobi 2 part film is 20 years old!!! (they must have repeated it a fair bit, i'm sure it's not that long since i saw it!

PuppyMonkey · 26/10/2008 10:42

Andrew Davies, dark and cold outside, lots of lovely costumes, good story, great cast... what's not to like?

wintera · 26/10/2008 19:47

Looking forward to this. Same set up as Bleak House isn't it? On a couple of times a week over a long period of time. Plus Andrew Davies as well, and another great cast. Should be good!

AbbaFan · 26/10/2008 21:07

I didn't like it much.

It was a bit all over the place I think - nothing particularly stood out so far and there are far too many characters (but that's possibly more a function of Dickens than the BBC!)

I shall watch next week and see if it improves...

spicemonster · 26/10/2008 21:26

Why are all Dickens novels filmed in sepia and blue?

sazzerbear · 26/10/2008 21:26

Yes, I thought it jumped around a bit, just being hyper-critical though - gotta love those costume dramas! Remember it's on in the week as well!

Marina · 26/10/2008 21:56

NosfeRaahhTu, I don't think that fantastic Edzard film has been repeated. It has just been issued on DVD though.
Ds watched tonight's with me and enjoyed it a lot. They have clearly thrown loads of cash at it - locations, stellar cast...but it'll have to be good to beat the Jacobi version. I cannot believe it's 20 years old either. We saw it at the London Film Festival

candyfluff · 27/10/2008 07:16

i liked this very interested to find out what the big secret is. dont understand why amy and family live in some sort of prison thing whats that all about?

OrmIrian · 27/10/2008 07:35

They are in a debtors prison candyfluff.

furrycat · 27/10/2008 10:30

Thought it was a rather lovely debtors prison with nice courtyard, huge room and cooking facilities...

Marina · 27/10/2008 10:55

No furniture though furrycat
The disgrace of giving one of the debtors' prisons as an address was huge.
Nice of Andrew to make Miss Wade a lesbian. Apparently Dickens didn't realise it, but she was.

TinkerBellesMum · 27/10/2008 11:18

I was rather exhausted yesterday so fell asleep during it. I'll try to get it on iplayer, but can't say I was so struck I was forcing myself to stay awake.

wintera · 27/10/2008 15:06

Andy Serkis was un-recognisable as the french bloke with the big hooter!

ipanemagirl · 27/10/2008 15:18

i love m macfadyen!

twosofar · 27/10/2008 16:47

I missed it, is it on again?

southeastalien · 27/10/2008 17:57

probably on bbciplayer.

thought it was very entertaining in a bbc sunday night way

SesHasapinkline · 27/10/2008 18:58

Am just watching it now as I Sky+ed it.

Andy Serkis is fab!

candyfluff · 28/10/2008 08:30

ok so call mt thick but what is a debtors prison?

SesHasapinkline · 28/10/2008 08:49

I think if you had debts, you were forced to go there until you repaid it all. Am sure I read somewhere - maybe on this thread?? - that Dickens' father actualy spent some time in one.

Amandoh · 28/10/2008 15:46

Yes, I remember reading a few years ago that all his family went to a debtors prison but he left when he was 11 or 12 to work in a bottle labeling factory.

I missed it on Sunday night but watched it on iPlayer last night. Like TinkerBellesMum I struggled to stay awake. I wasn't left wanting more when it ended but the snippets of the next episode looked exciting so will be watching again.

christywhisty · 28/10/2008 23:14

I used to work in Marshalsea Road, it's still a miserable place

I loved the Derec Jacobi version (can't believe it was 20 yrs ago)The story was told twice but from slightly different points of view.
This version looks promising, DH and I really enjoyed Bleak House when it was done in this format

ladystardust · 29/10/2008 14:03

I am SO disappointed and upset and angry I just want to CRY.
Move over Andrew Davies - your time has passed.
'Sacre Bleu'!
SACRE BLEU???? Since when did anyone in Dickens ever say SACRE BLEU? Was that just so we would know he was French??
How lazy can you get?
Little Dorrit is one of my favourite favourite books and he is killing it.
And Tattycoram - the best orphan ever is not black and thirty years old.
She's about 16!
I can't bear it.
And as for Arthur? The guy who played Darcy is not right for Arthur. Arthur isn't a romantic hero lead, he's a little old and a little sad and a little inept/naive.
I AM SO UPSET.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 30/10/2008 20:54

OK I'm watching now, it's not bad because of course it's a Dickens with high production values and good actors, but really it is NOTHING compared with the two-part film.

Mr Darcy does his best as Arthur but he's miscast. Too hunky, basically. You can't imagine Dickens ever using the word hunky when describing how he saw Arthur.

Little Dorrit's father has to compete with Alec Guinness. Poor man, he doesn't have a hope.

Marina · 31/10/2008 11:31

Oh, I don't think that Tom Courtenay's doing too bad a job. I think Emma Pierson is overdoing the sister, and Andy Serkis is ludicrous. I normally love his work - why not get an actual Frenchman for the role, instead of that dismal furniture-chewing turn?
Derek Jacobi was the right age and look for Arthur, agreed
