No, he's not a twat. I think he's spitting in the wind but, like WW says, his heart's in the right place. Who else is doing what he's trying to do? Most people either don't care about those he's trying to help or, like me, think it's just too little, too late and too much for one person, no matter how well meaning. But I don't see anyone else doing what he's trying to do - certainly not any other 'celebrity' chefs.
I think the only thing he's guilty of is naivety - salmon, fgs. Yes, you can make £80 a week go a lot further if you don't spend it all on takeaways but salmon is just ridiculous. And I wouldn't have started with meatballs and pasta - some of them couldn't boil water. The initial outlay was just unrealistic for people who have nothing in their cupboards - they would have to buy it all: olive oil, herbs, garlic, bloody Jacob's cream crackers, plus all the other ingredients. I would have started with scrambled eggs, beans on toast - that kind of thing. Really basic.
But I don't agree that "He is patronising and acts like all northerners are idiots who feed their kids crap". I think what comes across is that he just can't understand how people can't know this stuff - because it's second nature to him. And, tbh, it's beyond me how anyone can not know how to light a gas ring on a cooker.
I felt sorry for him tonight.
