OMG!

I had NO idea.

He was born in London, the son of two German Jewish refugees.

Gypsies, Jewish people and SN people are easy to marginalise sadly. Because to many peolpe they are invisible.

I have to say, beyond a lady who came into Uni to talk to us, I have never met a Jewish person knowingly. Nothing sinister in that, except I never happen to have livd anywhere with a Synagogue. But I'm lucky in that I'm inclined to value peple; if you weren't perhaps, then I do think that lack of familiarity breeds fear, and fear breeds intolerance.

DEFINITELY the way to teach history and I will do so with my two when they are older. My MiL was part of the Kinder Transport that came to England (there was a bit of a mention last night) She was 12, her brother was 14. Her parents put her on the train probably knowing that they would never see them again, and they didn't.

The only story she ever told me about it (she died 4 years ago) was that just as the train was pulling away a woman put a box through the window. When the children opened the box there were twin babies in there. That will always, always haunt me.

I grew up in a pretty intolerant society where people were killed for their beliefs - N Ireland in the 70's - and the current demonizing of Muslims reminds me of some of the attitudes I came across when I moved to 'liberal' England. "You're Irish therefore you're a terrorist"

Sadly, in my experience, intolerance seems to be part of human nature.

MrsTittleMouse · 28/08/2008 17:30

It was during the reign of Edward I (Longshanks) - wiki entry here.

Peachy · 28/08/2008 17:50

feetheart you might be right, just means we have to fight it twice as hard

tortoiseshell · 28/08/2008 17:51

The gypsy thing in Italy is quite scary I think - those photos of the dead children on the beach, that were just being ignored by holiday makers who carried on sunbathing next to them.

catweazle · 28/08/2008 18:12

Someone earlier was saying about normal people not knowing it was going on. We went to Holland several times in the 1970s (and has been mentioned earlier that was scarily close to the end of the war, although at the time it didn't seem like it).

My dad was very interested in both WWs so we visited a lot of museums and other war-related places. On one trip we went to a concentration camp (I've no idea which one; I'd have been 10 yo). The locals said they had no idea what was happening and were told some tale about why the chimneys were burning so often- we spoke to people who had lived there at the time plus the museum displays said so. My father didn't believe a word of it

Last year we went back to Anne Frank's house in Amsterdam. Displays there said the neighbours/ friends were only too eager to report hiding Jews because they were paid well for doing so

As for the Guards, some will have been truly evil and power-crazed; some will have seen the Jews and Gypsies as non-people so had no qualms about what they were doing; and some will have been doing their job for fear of something happening to them or their family

We also stayed with 2 German priests who had been fighter pilots during WW2. They had been involved in the bombing of Coventry They were both such gentle men- they said they had no choice.

edam · 28/08/2008 18:14

Oh, that's such a horrifying story, feetheart. I know a (female) war correspondent who told of one troublespot where women were throwing their babies over a barbed wire fence into a UN compound. Because it was the ONLY chance their children had. Terrible.

Heifer · 28/08/2008 18:41

JS was certainly the most genuine person on this (and previous) series.

Although to be fair, who ever was shown after PK was going to look genuine I guess...

On a lighter note, did anyone else hear JS say when told one of his Great Great... GP was called Abraham, he said oh the first man?

Now my bible studies may be a little rusty but wouldn't that have been Adam?

or did I just imagine that bit?

tortoiseshell · 28/08/2008 18:42

I wondered about that too! But maybe he is thinking of Abraham as being the father of Israel - he is the first 'real' type man (as opposed to the creationist style 'Adam').

ilovemydog · 28/08/2008 18:54

Wow - what a story.

Amazing though that the Israeli cousin and JS hasn't met before! It was almost poetic how JS was told, 'there's someone here I'd like you to meet...' as if he was making a cameo appearance on one of his own shows!

edam · 28/08/2008 18:54

No, I thought that was odd. Anyone know whether Adam is called Abraham in the Jewish 'Old Testament' (Torah?)?

Maybe Jerry's just a bit rusty on religion...

expatinscotland · 28/08/2008 18:54

JERRY! JERRY!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 28/08/2008 18:56

No, Abraham is another guy even in the Torah, IIRC.

OP posts:
edam · 28/08/2008 18:57

Maybe he just meant Abraham as in the father of Israel, then and was getting a bit mixed up due to all the heightened emotion? Either name is not exactly unusual so odd that he commented at all, really.

ilovemydog · 28/08/2008 19:47

completely changed my opinion of him. he's an articulate, compassionate, humble man.

so, what's the deal with the trailer trash tv?

expatinscotland · 28/08/2008 22:00

'so, what's the deal with the trailer trash tv?'

$$$$$ would be my guess.

although, he had a successful law and political career, too.

maybe the show looked to him like the sure thing it was!

OP posts:
Alambil · 28/08/2008 22:07

Ilove; changed my opinon of him too

ilovemydog · 28/08/2008 22:11

Naw - he was holding out for Jerry Springer the Musical!

JERRY JERRY!

fransmom · 29/08/2008 11:30

i missed it. i automatically thought that the repreat prog was on at 9pm. hmmph.

columbolover · 29/08/2008 12:48

This had me sobbing,

Made myself watch it as didn't feel I had the right to switch it off if that makes sense.

Have new respect for JS.

Don't want to repeat what everyone else has said, but this has brought back to me how this was relatively only a few years ago.

Those poor children being made to take part in the propoganda, playing with the toys. As someone said earlier, how could these soldiers have lived with themselves. So upsetting that so few of these children survived, their parents must have been beside themselves being unable to protect them

Cannot believe how easily people can become so cruel towards other people.

undercovercat · 29/08/2008 12:50
