Did anyone watch Graham Norton with Olivia Coleman last night?

I don't mind her - haven't made my mind up whether her daffy "silly me" persona is genuine or all an act, but anyway. Alex Scarsgard is gorgeous, but that film? Often I see films promoted enthusiastically on there and think hmm, not sure I'd bother going to see it, but Wicker? It looks bonkers. OK a sweet love story, but bonkers! Bonkers in a 'not worth my time' way. And then we find out that Olivia and her DH are producing it! The two leads seem so mismatched. Or is it just me?

I suspect the quirkiness is part of the act.
Well its not dojng her any favours!

Saw the Wicker trailer at the cinema and in a nutshell she is shagging a tree and groaning A LOT and that was just in the trailer

morning wood 🤣

I suspect the reason we feel she is mismatched in films with her leads is because she looks like she has had no facial work done and has a “normal” face and figure of a 52 year old, also is with leads roughly her own age or a bit younger.

Age does matter in film, obviously only working one way, but looks are just as important when it comes to casting.
Olivia is plain, so to cast her with a handsome man, unless the film is making a point, is unlikely to happen.
The ugliest oldest actors can be cast with far younger beautiful women, and that's always been the case.
Think back to Humphrey Bogart, Anthony Quinn, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery etc...none of them were young when being paired with far younger women, some were certainly not conventionally good-looking, all starring opposite beautiful women.

I’m put off because it reminds me of that Sally Hawkins film that got lots of plaudits, the Shape of Water where she fell in love with that amphibian thing. I didn’t see it because it looked like so much arty bs but maybe I’m being unfair on Wicker ?

As for Alexander I prefer his dad Blush Did you see River?

MintTwirl · Yesterday 14:08

I saw the trailer at the cinema, my 15 year old son was sat next to me and was visibly mortified at the obvious sexy bits in it.

I find her pretty irritating, even in the trailer I could feel my irritation levels rising.

BurnTheDress · Yesterday 14:23

How on earth anyone could describe her as ‘plain’ …

I enjoyed her part in The Night Manager, was impressed by The Favourite, and The Lost Daughter - but for the few brief moments she was on screen in The Bear she was an absolute goddess.

Not ‘plain’.

BeardySchnauzer · Yesterday 14:32

I guess plain is relative. She’s not a bombshell but she’s also obviously not been hit by the ugly stick

tbf, it probably means she’s offered more interesting roles. From what I understand of the plot of Wicker then having a classic beauty in the role probably wouldn’t work

Gourdgirl · Yesterday 14:44

Im really looking forward to the film!

I’d only shag a tree with good wood…

It’d have to be hard wood anyway

Deadringer · Yesterday 14:57

I thought she was quite toned down actually, not as ditzy as in past interviews. What the hell is going on with John Malkovich? He was somehow weird, creepy and boring all at the same time.

rookiemere · Yesterday 14:59

I wouldn’t say Olivia Coleman was plain, I would say striking rather than conventionally attractive in the same way that Benedict Cumberbatch is not strictly handsome.

I find her “oh silly me” nonsense really irritating. I assume it’s an act, she got into Cambridge. I doubt she was all “oh gosh aren’t I just so ditzy I barely know my own name” in her Cambridge interview.

I saw an interview with her on Graham Norton a few years ago where she said she couldn’t remember the plot of the film or her character's name. “I’m so silly I can’t remember a thing, it was so long ago and even though this is my actual job I didn’t glance at a synopsis before I came out to a pre planned interview where I knew I’d be asked”.

I do tend to like her in things though.

She did one term of teacher training in Cambridge (and was in Footlights while there) before going to drama school

I described her as plain, and I think she is...obviously opinions vary.
I did think she looked better with long hair, it suited her more than the curly short cut that makes her round face look rounder.
I don't find her irritating, more ditsy, but I think on Norton it did look a bit forced.

Honds · Yesterday 15:10

I've seen the trailers and if it was anyone but Olivia I'd think it looked awful, even a bit unpleasant (sick?).

But she rarely makes a bad one...

BurnTheDress · Yesterday 16:24

The Roses was pretty bad, tbf!

I did and I agree 😍

There's more to it than the hair - she's had something done but I can't put my finger on it. She's admitted she uses Botox and fillers.

Smokeywater · Yesterday 18:53

All these movies I|'ve never heard of
She is not traditionally actor looking but I think it depends if the movie is Hollywood where looks, however frozen, have to be v attractive. Whereas other country's movies not so much.
I think she is possibly ADHD or autistic. Certainly quirky.

Same. She's definitely had work done - it's becoming more apparent as she ages, as it does for anyone who has work done. Looks like some dental work as well.

Well she came out recently with all that claptrap about her describing herself as a gay man .

Yes that was truly odd and made me wonder if there’s something more going on with her or if she has just inhaled too much loveydom

JillyComeLately · Yesterday 22:59

Olivia Coleman is very ordinary to look out, similar to Glenda Jackson.
Both really good actresses, but personally I found GJ far more watchable.

Executrixnotextraordinaire · Yesterday 23:20

OC has always reminded me of GJ in some way that I couldn’t put my finger on, so interesting that you’ve said that.

Pieceofpurplesky · Yesterday 23:51

I only want to see it after the discussions of the puppetry of the penis! John Malkovich found it hilarious.
Alexander is extremely hot bit will always be Eric in True Blood for me. I like Olivia Coleman - how she can be described as plain is beyond me, she is striking looking and seems like a quirky character. I never get why people say 'I don't like her' - you don't know her, just a character she plays (whether in a film or on a chat show she has a persona)

I agree. She’s also one of few actresses in her age range who actually looks her age, which I appreciate. I think she’s got a fantastic face for a character actor.

I personally love her and think she’s a brilliant actor.
